ब्रिटेन में है सबसे पुराना संग्रहालय
आज से 343 वर्ष पहले 21 मई 1683 को ब्रिटेन के ऑक्सफोर्ड में दुनिया का पहला विश्वविद्यालय संग्रहालय ‘एशमोलियन’ खुला था। आज भी यह कला और पुरातत्व का बेहतरीन संग्रहालय है।
इस संग्रहालय की नींव प्रसिद्ध इंग्लिश पुरातत्वविद एलियास एशमोल ने रखी थी।
एशमोल ने दुर्लभ और अनोखी चीजों का संग्रह विश्वविद्यालय को दान कर दिया था।
जिस समय यह खुला, उस दौरान ऑक्सफोर्ड वैज्ञानिक खोजों का प्रमुख केंद्र था।
अन्य निजी संग्रहों के विपरीत, इसे नियमित रूप से आम जनता के लिए खोला गया था।
यहां रखी कलाकृतियां पांच लाख साल पुरानी सभ्यता से लेकर 20 वीं सदी तक की हैं।
इस संग्रहालय में मानव जाति द्वारा बनाए गए सबसे शुरुआती पत्थर के औजार मौजूद हैं।
आज इसे एशमोलियन म्यूजियम ऑफ आर्ट एंड आर्कियोलॉजी के नाम से जाना जाता है।
यह संग्रहालय प्राचीन मिस्र की ममी से लेकर आधुनिक पेंटिंग तक का अनूठा संगम है।
