LONDON, Nov 3 (Reuters) – British finance minister Jeremy Hunt said the Bank of England’s interest rate hike on Thursday would be “very tough” for families with mortgages and businesses with loans.
They allow homeowners aged 55 and over to get a loan secured on their home, worth up to 60 per cent of its value, while still remaining the sole owner.
They can use the money for anything they like.
Under the proposal, people would not be expected to finish paying off their mortgages during their lifetimes.
Instead, they would be able to hand over their properties to their children – including the outstanding debt.
The Government’s mortgage guarantee scheme supported only a tiny proportion of total first-time home buyers in its first five months, according to newly-released figures.
