नोबल शान्ति पुरस्कार

नोबल शान्ति पुरस्कार के संस्थापक स्वयं एक शस्त्रास्त्र निर्माता थे। वह स्वीडन के रहने वाले थे और उनका नाम अलफ्रेड नोबल था। इसलिए इस पुरस्कार को नोबल शान्ति पुरस्कार कहा जाता है। अलफ्रेड नोबल ने शस्त्रास्त्रों का निर्माण करके खूब धन कमाया, किन्तु अन्त में वह शान्तिवादी बन गये थे। उन्होंने करीब चार करोड़ रुपये का एक कोष स्थापित किया, जिससे प्रतिवर्ष लगभग एक लाख 80 हजार रुपये पुरस्कारों के रूप में वितरित किये जाते हैं। शान्ति के अलावा साहित्य, भौतिक शास्त्र, रसायन शास्त्र, शरीर विज्ञान और चिकित्सा शास्त्र के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय काम करने वालों को भी प्रतिवर्ष पुरस्कार दिये जाते हैं।

अलफ्रेड नोबल ने एक तेज विस्फोटक पदार्थ की खोज की थी। इस शोध ने युद्ध में संहार-कार्य को तीव्र बनाया, वहीं उसकी सहायता से पहाड़ों को काटकर नजदीकी मार्ग भी निकाले जा सके। वह उपयोगकर्ताओं पर निर्भर करता है कि वह किसी आविष्कार का उपयोग संहार के लिए करते हैं अथवा निर्माण के लिए। अणु-शक्ति के लिए भी यही कहा जा रहा है कि उसका उपयोग मानव की सुख-सुविधाओं को बढ़ाने में किया जा सकता है, किन्तु अभी तो संसार ने उसके संहारक रूप का ही परिचय पाया है। अणु-बमों का संग्रह संसार की शान्ति के लिए महान खतरा बन गया है। अलफ्रेड नोबल भी विस्फोटक पदार्थ का शायद आविष्कार न करते, यदि उन्हें पता होता कि उसका इतना दुरुपयोग होगा। सन् 1950 में शान्ति पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने का सौभाग्य डॉ. राल्फ बंच को मिला है। डॉ. बंच ने हब्शी कुल में जन्म लिया है और उनके दादा गुलामी का जीवन बिता चुके हैं। डॉ. बंच अमरीकी नागरिक हैं, जहां विधान द्वारा न सही, व्यवहार में गोरों और हब्शियों के बीच काफी भेदभाव है। किन्तु डॉ. बंचने अपनी योग्यता और कार्य द्वारा यह सिद्ध कर दिया कि परमात्मा ने प्रतिभा किसी एक वर्ण के लोगों के लिए सुरक्षित नहीं की है। फिलस्तीन में अरबों और यहूदियों के बीच समझौता करवाने का प्रयास करते हुए संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के प्रतिनिधि काउण्ट बर्नाडोट को अपने प्राणों की आहुति देनी पड़ी थी। वह हत्यारों की गोली के शिकार हुए थे। इससे पता चल गया कि मध्यस्थता करना कोई हंसी-खेल नहीं, सिर हथेली पर रखकर चलना है।

The founder of the Nobel Peace Prize was himself a weapons manufacturer. He was a Swedish citizen and his name was Alfred Nobel. Therefore, the award is called the Nobel Peace Prize. Alfred Nobel earned a fortune by manufacturing weapons, but ultimately became a pacifist. He established a fund of approximately 40 million rupees, from which approximately 180,000 rupees are distributed annually as prizes. In addition to peace, prizes are also awarded annually to those who have made outstanding achievements in the fields of literature, physics, chemistry, physiology, and medicine.

Alfred Nobel discovered a powerful explosive. This discovery accelerated destruction in war, while also enabling the cutting of mountains to create safe passages. Whether an invention is used for destruction or construction depends on the user. The same is being said about nuclear power: it can be used to enhance human comforts, but so far the world has only witnessed its destructive potential. The stockpile of atomic bombs poses a grave threat to world peace. Even Alfred Nobel might not have invented the explosive if he had known it would be so misused. Dr. Ralph Bunch was honored to receive the Peace Prize in 1950. Dr. Bunch was born into an Abyssinian family, and his grandfather had lived in slavery. Dr. Bunch is an American citizen, where, if not by law, there is considerable discrimination between whites and Abyssinians in practice. However, through his abilities and actions, Dr. Bunch proved that God does not reserve talent for a single race. Count Bernadotte, the United Nations representative, had to sacrifice his life while trying to broker a compromise between Arabs and Jews in Palestine. He was shot by assassins. This showed that mediation was no joke; it was a matter of life and death.
