वर्ष-परिवर्तन के समय कई ऐसे उद्‌गार हमारे सामने आये हैं, जिन पर ध्यान देकर लाभ उठाया जा सकता है। प्रधानमंत्री श्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने कहा है, ‘आओ, हम सब नये वर्ष को अपने राष्ट्रीय जीवन में कायापलट करने वाला बनायें। हम सब अपने दिलों में उस पुरानी रोशनी को पुनः प्रज्वलित कर नई शुरुआत करें, जो भयंकर संघर्ष के दिनों में हमारे दिलों को प्रकाशमान करती थी। और, हम सब मिलकर भारत की सेवा में जुट जायें।’ नेहरूजी ने खाली यह आह्वान ही नहीं किया है, बल्कि तत्व की कुछ बातें भी कही हैं।

विश्व-समस्याओं को शांतिपूर्वक हल करने की प्रेरणा करते हुए उन्होंने इस बात की उपेक्षा नहीं की है कि ‘आज यदि हम शांति की बात करते हैं, तो कभी-कभी लोग उसे गलती से आत्म-समर्पण या तुष्टीकरण समझ लेते हैं।’

और ‘बहुतों को आत्म-समर्पण या तुष्टीकरण का एकमात्र विकल्प युद्धदिखाई देता है, चाहे उसके कितने ही भयंकर परिणाम क्यों न हों।’ लेकिन, उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया है कि शांति का उनका प्रतिपादन आत्म-समर्पण या बुराई के साथ समझौते का प्रतिपादन नहीं है; इसके विपरीत, उनकी दृढ़ धारणा है कि ‘शांति को बुराई के साथ समझौता करके नहीं खरीदा जा सकता और न उसकी उन तरीकों से रक्षा हो सकती है, जो स्वयं शांति के लिए घातक हैं।’ बल्कि युद्ध के सिवा और भी विकल्प या रास्ते हैं ‘जिनमें आत्म-समर्पण नहीं करना पड़ता, फिर भी उद्देश्य की प्राप्ति हो जाती है।’ इसी भावना में विश्व-समस्याओं के हल का प्रतिपादन करके वह लंदन-सम्मेलन का जिक्र करते हुए, जिसमें भाग लेने वह जा रहे हैं, कहते हैं कि ‘अगर हम सही दिशा में एक छोटा-सा कदम भी उठा सके, तो (लंदन) सम्मेलन का होना सार्थक हो जायेगा।’

अपने एक दूसरे भाषण में, जो मैसूर सेवादल के स्वयंसेवकों के समक्ष उन्होंने दिया, पूर्ण अनुशासन पर नेहरूजी ने जोर दिया है। देश-सेवा के लिए पूर्ण अनुशासन को अत्यावश्यक बताते हुए नेहरूजी कहते हैंः ‘हर एक देश-सेवा की बात करता है, लेकिन ठीक तरह देश-सेवा करने के लिए पूर्ण अनुशासन अत्यावश्यक है। अगर हर व्यक्ति अपनी मनमानी करे, तो कोई अनुशासन नहीं रह सकता, न कोई सेवा ही संभव है।’ दूसरे बड़े देशों का हवाला देते हुए वह कहते हैं, वे अच्छा और बड़ा काम करते हैं।

At the turn of the year, several pronouncements have come before us that are worth considering. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said, “Let us all make the new year a transformative one in our national life. Let us rekindle in our hearts that old light which illuminated our hearts during the days of fierce struggle, and let us all begin anew. And let us all dedicate ourselves to the service of India.” Nehru did not merely issue this call; he also spoke of some fundamental principles.

While advocating for the peaceful resolution of world problems, he did not ignore the fact that “today, when we speak of peace, people sometimes mistakenly interpret it as surrender or appeasement.”

And “many see war as the only alternative to surrender or appeasement, regardless of its terrible consequences.” But he clarified that his advocacy of peace is not an advocacy of surrender or compromise with evil; on the contrary, he firmly believes that “peace cannot be bought by compromising with evil, nor can it be protected by methods that are themselves fatal to peace.” Rather, there are other options or paths besides war, “in which one does not have to surrender, yet the objective is achieved.” It is in this spirit that he advocated for the solution of world problems, and referring to the London Conference, which he was about to attend, he said, “If we can take even a small step in the right direction, then the (London) conference will have been worthwhile.”

In another speech, which he delivered to the volunteers of the Mysore Seva Dal, Nehru emphasized complete discipline. Stating that complete discipline is essential for national service, Nehru said: “Everyone talks about national service, but to serve the nation properly, complete discipline is essential. If every individual acts according to their own whims, there can be no discipline, nor can any service be possible.” Referring to other large countries, he says, “They do good and great work.”
