त्रिपुरासुर पर शिव की विजय और देव दीपावली

भगवान शिव ने जिस दिन त्रिपुरासुर का वध किया था, उस दिन कार्तिक मास की पूर्णिमा तिथि थी। इसे ‘त्रिपुरारी पूर्णिमा’ भी कहते हैं। भगवान शिव द्वारा त्रिपुरासुर के वध की खुशी में देवताओं ने शिव की नगरी काशी में जाकर दीप जलाए, इसलिए कार्तिक पूर्णिमा को ‘देव दीपावली’ (05 नवंबर) भी कहा जाता है।
पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार असुर तारकाक्ष, कमलाक्ष और विद्युन्माली ने देवताओं को पराजित करने के लिए कठोर तप किया। उनके कठोर तप प्रसन्न होकर ब्रह्माजी ने उनसे वरदान से मांगने को कहा। तीनों ने अमर होने का वरदान मांगा। बाह्मा जी ने यह अस्वीकार कर दिया, लेकिन ऐसा वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा, जिससे उन असुरों को मारना किसी के लिए भी असंभव जितना कठिन काम हो।
तीनों ने बहुत विचार कर वरदान मांगा, ‘आप हमारे लिए तीन अद्भुत नगरों का निर्माण करें। वे तीनों नगर जब अभिजित नक्षत्र में एक पंक्ति में आएं और जो देवता तोनों नगरों को एक ही बाण से नष्ट करने की शक्ति रखता हो, वही व्यक्ति शांत अवस्था में हमें मारे। तभी हमारी मृत्यु हो। हमें मारने के लिए उस व्यक्ति को एक ऐसे रथ और बाण की आवश्यकता हो, जो बनाना असंभव हो। ब्रह्मा ने कहा, ‘तथास्तु ब्रह्मानी ने विश्वकर्मा को तारकाक्ष के लिए स्वर्णपुरी, कमलाक्ष के लिए रजतपुरी और विद्युन्माली के लिए लौहपुरी का निर्माण करने के लिए कहा। ब्रह्माजी से वरदान प्राप्त होने के बाद तीनों असुर सातों लोकों में आतंक मचाने लगे। उन्होंने देवताओं को पराजित कर देवलोक से बाहर निकाल दिया। इन तीनों असुरों को ही त्रिपुरासुर कहा जाता था। त्रिपुरासुर के आतंक से अस्त होकर इंद्र देवताओं सहित भगवान शिव की शरण में गए। उनकी पीड़ा सुनकर शिवजी ने त्रिपुरासुर का संहार करने का निश्चय किया। भगवान शिव ब्रह्माजी द्वारा उन तीनों को दिए गए वरदान के अनुसार विशेष रथ पर सवार हुए। इस दिव्य रथ की हर एक चीज देवताओं से बनी थी। सूर्य और चंद्रमा रथ के पहिये बने। इंद्र, वरुण, यम और कुबेर रथ के चार घोड़े बने। हिमालय धनुष बने। शेषनाग प्रत्यंचा बने। भगवान विष्णु बाण बने। धाण की नोक बने अग्निदेव। भगवान शिव और तीनों असुरों के बीच भयंकर युद्ध हुआ। अभिजित नक्षत्र में तीनों नगरों के एक पंक्ति में आते ही भगवान शिव ने अपने बाण से तीनों नगरों को जलाकर भस्म कर दिया और तीनों असुरों का अंत कर दिया। तभी से भगवान शिव का एक नाम त्रिपुरारि और त्रिपुरांतक हो गया। त्रिपुरांतक का अर्थ है, तीन पुरी का अर्थात नगरों का अंत करनेवाले।

The day Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura was the full moon day of the month of Kartik. It is also called ‘Tripurari Purnima’. Celebrating the slaying of Tripurasura by Lord Shiva, the gods went to Shiva’s city, Kashi, and lit lamps. Therefore, Kartik Purnima (November 5) is also known as ‘Dev Deepawali’.
According to legend, the demons Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali performed severe penance to defeat the gods. Pleased with their intense penance, Lord Brahma asked them to ask for a boon. All three asked for immortality. Lord Brahma declined, but asked them to ask for a boon that would make killing the demons impossible.
After much deliberation, the three asked for the boon, “Build three wonderful cities for us.” When those three cities align in the Abhijit nakshatra, and the god who possesses the power to destroy all three cities with a single arrow strikes us in a calm state, only then will we die. To kill us, that person will need a chariot and an arrow that are impossible to make. Brahma said, “So be it!” Brahmani instructed Vishwakarma to build Swarnapur for Tarakaksha, Rajatapur for Kamalaksha, and Lohapuri for Vidyunmali. After receiving the boon from Brahma, the three demons began to terrorize the seven worlds. They defeated the gods and expelled them from Devaloka. These three demons were known as Tripurasura. Overwhelmed by Tripurasura’s terror, Indra and the gods sought refuge in Lord Shiva. Hearing their plight, Shiva resolved to destroy Tripurasura. Lord Shiva, in accordance with the boon granted to them by Brahma, rode a special chariot. Every element of this divine chariot was made by the gods. The sun and the moon served as the chariot’s wheels. Indra, Varuna, Yama and Kubera became the four horses of the chariot. The Himalayas became the bow. Sheshnag became the string. Lord Vishnu became the arrow. Agnidev became the tip of the arrow. A fierce battle took place between Lord Shiva and the three demons. As soon as the three cities came in a line in the Abhijit Nakshatra, Lord Shiva burnt all three cities to ashes with his arrow and ended all three demons. Since then, one of the names of Lord Shiva became Tripurari and Tripurantak. Tripurantak means the one who destroys the three cities i.e. cities.
