I have joined Calista Resort in 2013 as a Quality Standards Executive. Currently, whilst still learning and development, I oversee the wellness proposition across the group, having launched Calista Resort Spa in Gurgaon in January 2016. Four key pillars form part of the wellness proposition: Calista Resort Rituals, Calista Resort Fitness, Calista Resort Nourish, and Calista Resort Health.
I was also awarded government funding in 2014 to create a career and training app for the hospitality industry. Do you know where I was promoting the app? My career is probably different from most in the wellness industry. I have a younger brother who is studying and my mother is doing a job. My father is no more so I have more responsibilities. I have decided to help my mother once I complete my education. I was struggling hard for a Job, was posting everywhere but didn’t get a response from anyone. I was brought in to create brand standards, including new service philosophy, pillars, and behaviors. Wellness is something that I have always wanted to get involved in as it has always been a personal passion of mine.
I saw the need to cater to the growing demand for health-conscious guests. Moreover, I saw that city hotels were not being very inventive in finding ways to cater to them. Since launching Calista Resort Spas, I have started to also oversee the spa operation for the group and I have fallen in love with the wellness world.
The hardest challenge I have faced in my career is it has certainly been challenging to get buy-in from the top to invest in our spas. When I started creating Calista Resort Spas, our spas were only making 2% of revenue, and thus why should they invest more money in them? Moreover, it is difficult to prove how having a strong wellness concept impacts room bookings. While I am on the leading career path, I learned that it is about educating them, sharing what others are doing in the wellness space, as well as key industry stats.
Today, I can say that the Spa and Wellness industry is truly fantastic. Firstly, it aims to look after people, caring for them, and making them quite simply feel better. Secondly, the people that work in wellness are amazing because they are deeply passionate about caring for other people and creating a healthier future for everyone. The most important point is the world of wellness is developing so quickly and this evolution is extremely dynamic and exciting.
