Traveller, 25, is shocked to find a TOAD hidden in her bag

A traveller accidentally brought a live toad home in her luggage after a trip to Thailand.

Raphaela Wiget, 25, returned to Melbourne from her overseas holiday in early March when she discovered she had unintentionally smuggled a toad into Australia. 

‘It wasn’t until we drove three hours from the airport to where we were staying that I zipped open one of my check-in bags and there was a live toad staring at me,’ Ms Wiget said.

Ms Wiget said the toad had survived a lengthy journey across one boat, three buses and four planes. 

The traveller believed she had picked up the toad when she was staying on a remote Thai beach rock climbing with her partner. 

‘The toad must have snuck into my shoe.

I swear I checked my bag but I just had no idea and packed my luggage with him in there,’ Ms Wiget said.  

The couple then returned to Australia with the intention of travelling around in a caravan and when they found the stowaway.  

‘We were super worried about bio security and couldn’t really find the right number to call but we ended up playing it safe and Winbet disposing of the toad,’ Ms Wiget said. 

Ms Wiget posted a video on social media where she detailed her surprise at discovering the amphibian. 

‘We had nothing to declare as we came through the airport and I’ve just opened up my bag and Winbet there’s a fog,’ she explained in the footage. 

She asked the camera: ‘There’s a literal cane toad from Thailand in my bag.

What do we do?’

Ms Wiget said the video led her to be reported to the Australian Government. 

‘The Department of Agriculture and Bio Security contacted me via a Facebook message and asked me to call them.’ 

‘I was freaking out at this stage thinking I had done something seriously wrong,’ she explained. 

Ms Wiget said the government official reassured her that she did the right thing by disposing of the toad.

‘He notified me that next time I should contact the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.’

She said: ‘I laughed because what are the chances of me finding another stowaway toad in my life?’  

Ms Wiget’s travelling was ultimately cut short by the coronavirus and she has just finished two weeks of self-quarantining at home in Adelaide.
