Direction confusion of the Socialists

The resolutions accepted so far in the Madras session of the Indian Socialist Party are indicative of the fact that the Socialist Party does not have any fundamental program of its own. By taking some things from the Congress and some from the Communists and opposing both in some matters, it wants to win the hearts of the Indian people in some way. The truth is that its program is not different from the Congress program and if we look carefully, we will find that at least in foreign policy it is following in the footsteps of the Congress government. But it wants to say that it is opposed to itself and this is the reason that from time to time it keeps announcing such policies which neither match its own program nor are contrary to the Congress program.

Babu Jayaprakash Narayan, General Secretary of the Socialist Party, says that the Socialist Party follows the footsteps of both Karl Marx and Mahatma Gandhi. Everyone knows that Marxist principles are the basic principles of communism and there are such fundamental differences between communism and Gandhism that they cannot allow both to flourish together. In such a situation, Jayaprakash Babu’s statement that the socialist party is a follower of both Marx and Gandhi is equivalent to saying that the socialist party is riding two horses which after walking together for a short distance run off in different directions. It is not necessary to tell what is the result of such horse riding. It does not seem that Jayaprakash Babu is unaware of this crisis, because he himself has explained his statement by saying that if Marx were alive today, he would have adopted Gandhian methods. This means that Jayaprakash Babu likes the principles of Marxism and the methodology of Gandhism. But in real life, the harmony between these two is doubtful, if not impossible. In such a situation, fault-finders may get an opportunity to say that the socialists have dragged Marx’s name along with them because they want to become popular in the eyes of the public which easily gets misled by the Marxists in the greed of economic equality.

समाजवादियों का दिशा भ्रम

भारतीय समाजवादी दल के मद्रास अधिवेशन में अब तक स्वीकृत किये गये प्रस्ताव इस बात के परिचायक हैं कि वास्तव में समाजवादी दल के समक्ष अपना कोई मौलिक कार्यक्रम नहीं है। कुछ बातें कांग्रेस और कुछ साम्यवादियों से लेकर और कुछ में दोनों का विरोध करके यह किसी प्रकार भारतीय जनता के हृदय पर विजय प्राप्त करना चाहता है। सच तो यह है कि उसका कार्यक्रम कांग्रेस के कार्यक्रम से भिन्न नहीं है और यदि हम ध्यानपूर्वक देखें, तो हमें पता चलेगा कि कम से कम विदेश नीति में वह कांग्रेस सरकार के ही पद-चिन्हों पर चल रहा है। किंतु कहना तो वह अपने को विरोधी चाहता है और यही कारण है कि समय-समय पर वह ऐसी नीति की घोषणा करता रहता है जो न उसके अपने कार्यक्रम से मेल खाती है और न कांग्रेस-कार्यक्रम के विपरीत है।

समाजवादी दल के महामंत्री बाबू जयप्रकाश नारायण का कहना है कि समाजवादी दल कार्ल मार्क्स और महात्मा गांधी दोनों के पद-चिन्हों पर चलता है। यह सभी जानते हैं कि मार्क्सवादी सिद्धांत साम्यवाद के आधारभूत सिद्धांत हैं और साम्यवाद तथा गांधीवाद में ऐसे मौलिक अंतर हैं, जो दोनों को साथ-साथ फलने-फूलने नहीं दे सकते। ऐसी दशा में जयप्रकाश बाबू का यह कहना कि समाजवादी दल मार्क्स और गांधी दोनों का अनुयायी है, यह कहने के बराबर हुआ कि समाजवादी दल दो ऐसे घोड़ों पर सवार है, जो थोड़ी दूर तक साथ-साथ चलकर फिर पृथक-पृथक दिशाओं में भाग पड़ते हैं। ऐसी घुड़सवारी का अंजाम क्या होता है, यह बताना जरूरी नहीं। जयप्रकाश बाबू इस संकट से अनभिज्ञ हों, ऐसा तो नहीं लगता, क्योंकि उन्होंने स्वयं अपने वक्तव्य की व्याख्या करते हुए कहा है कि यदि मार्क्स आज जीवित होते, तो गांधीवादी युक्तियों को ही अपनाते। इसका अर्थ तो यह हुआ कि जयप्रकाश बाबू को सिद्धांत मार्क्सवाद का पसन्द है और कार्यप्रणाली गांधीवाद की। किंतु वास्तविक जीवन में इन दोनों का सामंजस्य यदि असम्भव नहीं तो संदिग्ध अवश्य है। ऐसी अवस्था में छिद्रान्वेषकों को यह कहने का अवसर मिल सकता है कि समाजवादियों ने अपने साथ मार्क्स का नाम इसलिए घसीट लिया है कि वे उस जनता की आंखों में लोकप्रिय बनना चाहते हैं जो आर्थिक समानता के लोभ में सहज ही मार्क्सवादियों के बहकावे में आ जाती है।
