एक शिष्य के लिए उसका गुरु ही उसका ईश्वर है
समुद्र में एक प्रकार की सीपी होती है, जो स्वाति नक्षत्र की वर्षा की एक बूंद के लिए सदा मुंह बाए पानी पर तैरती रहती है, किंतु स्वाति की वर्षा का एक बिंदु जल मुंह में पड़ते ही वह मुंह बंद कर सीधे समुद्र की गहरी सतह में डूब जाती है तथा वहां उस जल बिंदु से मोती तैयार करती है। इसी तरह यथार्थ मुमुक्षु साधक भी सद्गुरु की खोज में व्याकुल होकर इधर-उधर भटकता रहता है; परंतु एक बार सद्गुरु के निकट मंत्र पा जाने के बाद वह साधना के अगाध जल में डूब जाता है तथा अन्य किसी ओर ध्यान न देते हुए सिद्धि लाभ तक साधना में लगा रहता है।

ऐसे गुरु यदि पंडित या शास्त्रज्ञ न भी हों तो घबराने का कारण नहीं। उन्होंने किताबी ज्ञान भले ही नहीं सीखा हो पर उनमें यथार्थ ज्ञान की कभी कमी नहीं होती। सच्ची भक्ति हो तो सामान्य वस्तुओं से भी ईश्वर का उद्दीपन होकर साधक भाव में विभोर हो जाता है। एक बार किसी गांव से गुजरते समय चैतन्य देव ने सुना कि हरि- संकीर्तन में बजाने वाला मृदंग इसी गांव की मिट्टी से बनता है। सुनते ही वे बोल उठे, ‘इस मिट्टी से मृदंग बनता है!’ और एकदम बाह्यज्ञान खोकर भावसमाधि में मग्न हो गए। इस मिट्टी से मृदंग बनता है। उस मृदंग को बजाते हुए हरिनाम गाया जाता है। वे हरि सब के प्राणों के प्राण हैं, वे सुंदर के भी सुंदर हैं। इस तरह के विचार उनके चित्त में खिल गए और उनका चित्त हरि में स्थिर हो गया।
इसी प्रकार, जिसमें गुरु के प्रति सच्ची भक्ति होती है, उसे गुरु के सगे-संबंधियों को देखकर गुरु का ही उद्दीपन होता है। इतना ही नहीं, गुरु के गांव के लोगों को देखने पर भी उसे उस प्रकार की उद्दीपना होती है और वह उन्हें प्रणाम कर उनकी चरण-धूलि ग्रहण करता है, उन्हें खिलाता-पिलाता है, उनकी सेवा-शुश्रूषा करता है।
अपनी भक्ति के कारण वह शिष्य गुरु को मनुष्य की दृष्टि से नहीं देखता, वह उन्हें भगवान के ही रूप में देखता है। जिस प्रकार पीलिया हो जाने पर सब कुछ पीला ही पीला दिखाई पड़ता है, उसी प्रकार इस शिष्य को भी सब कुछ ईश्वरमय ही दिखाई देता है। उसकी भक्ति ही उसे दिखा देती है कि ईश्वर ही सब कुछ हैं। वे ही गुरु, माता-पिता, पशु-पक्षी जड़-चेतन सब हैं।

Similarly, a true Mumukshu seeker also keeps wandering here and there in search of a Sadguru; But once he gets the mantra from the Sadguru, he gets immersed in the deep waters of Sadhana and without paying attention to anything else, he continues to do Sadhana till he attains Siddhi.

Even if such a guru is not a pundit or a scientist, there is no reason to panic. They may not have learned bookish knowledge but they never lack real knowledge. If there is true devotion then even ordinary things inspire God and the seeker becomes overwhelmed with emotion. Once while passing through a village, Chaitanya Dev heard that the Mridangam played in Hari-Sankirtan was made from the soil of this village. As soon as he heard this he said, ‘Mridang is made from this soil!’ And having completely lost external knowledge, he became engrossed in ecstasy. Mridang is made from this soil. Harinam is sung while playing that Mridang. That Hari is the life of everyone’s life, he is even the most beautiful of the beautiful. Such thoughts bloomed in his mind and his mind became fixed on Hari.
Similarly, one who has true devotion towards the Guru, gets inspired by the Guru by seeing his relatives. Not only this, when the Guru sees the people of his village, he gets that kind of excitement and he salutes them, accepts the dust of their feet, feeds them, takes care of them.
Because of his devotion, the disciple does not see the Guru as a human being, he sees him as God. Just as in case of jaundice everything appears yellow, similarly to this disciple also everything appears divine. His devotion itself shows him that God is everything. He is the Guru, the parents, the animals, the birds, the inanimate and the animate.
