वैशाख मास
न माधवसमो मासो न कृतेन युगं समम् । न च वेदसमं शास्त्रं न तीर्थं गंगया समम् ।।
(-स्कंद पुराण, वैष्णव खंड)
-‘वैशाख के समान कोई मास नहीं, सतयुग के समान कोई युग नहीं, वेद के समान कोई शास्त्र नहीं और गंगा के समान कोई तीर्थ नहीं है।’ अपनी इसी विशिष्टता के कारण वैशाख मास, जिसे सामान्यतः बैसाख भी कहते हैं, को सभी मासों में उत्तम मास कहा गया है। भगवान विष्णु ने वैशाख मास में मधु दैत्य का वध किया था, इसलिए इस महीने को ‘माधव’ मास भी कहा जाता है।
पुराणों में ऐसा वर्णन है कि देवर्षि नारद ने राजा अंबरीश से कहा था कि स्वयं ब्रह्मा ने वैशाख मास को सब मासों में उत्तम कहा है। वैशाख मास में सभी तीर्थ, देवी-देवता आदि जल में निवास करते हैं। भगवान विष्णु की आज्ञा से मनुष्यों का कल्याण करने के लिए वे सूर्योदय से लेकर छह दंड (दिन का एक चौथाई भाग) तक वहां उपस्थित रहते हैं। जो पुण्य सभी प्रकार के दान और जो फल सभी तीर्थों के दर्शन से मिलता है, उसी पुण्य और फल की प्राप्ति वैशाख
मास में केवल जल का दान करने से हो जाती है। देवर्षि नारद ने राजा अंबरीश से कहा था कि वैशाख मास में खड़ाऊं दान करने से मनुष्य को विष्णु लोक में स्थान मिलता है।
वैशाख मास में भगवान विष्णु के माधव रूप की पूजा की जाती है। इस मास में जो मनुष्य सात गंगाओं-जाह्नवी (गंगा), वृद्ध गंगा (गोदावरी), कालिंदी (यमुना), सरस्वती, कावेरी, नर्मदा और वेणी नदी में से किसी एक में भी सूर्योदय पूर्व स्नान करता है, उसे मोक्ष मिलता है।
पद्म पुराण के अनुसार वैशाख मास में प्रातः स्नान का महत्व अश्वमेध यज्ञ के समान माना गया है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि वैशाख शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी से वैशाख पूर्णिमा तक इन पांच दिनों में सूर्योदय पूर्व स्नान करने से न सिर्फ पूरे माह के स्नान करने का बल्कि वर्ष भर के पूजा-पाठ, दान और स्नान का फल मिल जाता है। राजा महीरथ को केवल वैशाख मास के स्नान से ही मोक्ष मिल गया था।
वैशाखी पूर्णिमा के दिन ही ब्रह्मा ने तिलों को उत्पन्न किया था। एक अन्य पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार भगवान विष्णु के स्वेद से सफेद तथा काले तिलों का जन्म हुआ था, इसलिए इस मास में सभी प्रकार के धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों में काले तिलों का प्रयोग किया जाता है। लक्ष्मी की पूजा में सिर्फ सफेद तिल का और विष्णु पूजा में काले तिल का महत्व है। इसी प्रकार इस माह में तिल के दान और सेवन के साथ-साथ जल, छाता, पंखा, चटाई, जूते-चप्पल का दान करना विशेष पुण्य देने वाला होता है।
जिस प्रकार माघ मास में प्रयाग में कल्पवास करना पुण्यदायी माना गया है। उसी प्रकार वैशाख मास में उज्जैन में कल्पवास करना विशेष पुण्य फलदायी माना गया है। चैत्र पूर्णिमा से वैशाखी पूर्णिमा पर्यंत कल्पवास, प्रतिदिन क्षिप्रा-स्नान का विशेष महत्व है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि जो व्यक्ति वैशाख मास में यहां वास करता है, वह साक्षात शिव स्वरूप हो जाता है।

The Month of Vaishakh
Na Madhavasamo maso, na Kritena yugam samam. Na cha Vedasamaṁ shastraṁ, na tirtham Gangaya samam.
— (Skanda Purana, Vaishnava Khanda)
— “There is no month equal to Vaishakh; there is no era equal to the Satya Yuga; there is no scripture equal to the Vedas; and there is no pilgrimage site equal to the Ganges.” Due to this very distinctiveness, the month of Vaishakh—commonly referred to as Baisakh—is acclaimed as the supreme among all months. Lord Vishnu vanquished the demon Madhu during the month of Vaishakh; consequently, this month is also known as the ‘Madhava’ month.
The Puranas recount that the divine sage Narada once told King Ambarisha that Lord Brahma Himself has declared Vaishakh to be the finest of all months. During the month of Vaishakh, all holy pilgrimage sites, deities, and divine beings reside within the waters. Acting upon the command of Lord Vishnu, and for the welfare of humanity, they remain present in the waters from sunrise until the passing of six dandas (approximately one-quarter of the day). The spiritual merit derived from all forms of charity, and the spiritual rewards gained from visiting all holy pilgrimage sites, can be attained in the month of Vaishakh simply by the act of donating water. Devrishi Narada further informed King Ambarisha that by donating a pair of wooden sandals (padukas) during the month of Vaishakh, a human being secures a place in Vishnu Loka (the celestial abode of Lord Vishnu).
During the month of Vaishakh, Lord Vishnu is worshipped in His form as ‘Madhava.’ Any individual who, during this month, performs a ritual bath before sunrise in any one of the seven sacred rivers—the Jahnavi (Ganges), Vriddha Ganga (Godavari), Kalindi (Yamuna), Saraswati, Kaveri, Narmada, or Veni—is granted the boon of Moksha (liberation).
According to the Padma Purana, the spiritual significance of performing a morning bath during the month of Vaishakh is considered to be equivalent to that of performing the Ashwamedha Yajna (the Horse Sacrifice). It is widely believed that taking a pre-dawn bath during the five-day period spanning from the Ekadashi (eleventh day) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Vaishakh up to Vaishakh Purnima (the full moon day) yields spiritual merits equivalent not merely to bathing for the entire month, but to a full year’s worth of worship, acts of charity, and ritual bathing. It is said that King Mahirath attained salvation solely through the ritual bathing performed during the month of Vaishakh.
It was on the very day of Vaishakh Purnima that Lord Brahma created sesame seeds. According to another mythological legend, white and black sesame seeds originated from the divine perspiration of Lord Vishnu; consequently, black sesame seeds are utilized in all manner of religious rituals performed during this month. Specifically, white sesame seeds hold significance in the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, while black sesame seeds are deemed essential for the worship of Lord Vishnu. Furthermore, during this month, in addition to the donation and consumption of sesame seeds, the act of donating water, umbrellas, hand-fans, mats, and footwear is considered to bestow exceptional spiritual merit.
Just as undertaking Kalpavas (a spiritual retreat) in Prayag during the month of Magha is considered highly meritorious, similarly, observing Kalpavas in Ujjain during the month of Vaishakh is regarded as yielding exceptionally fruitful spiritual rewards. The practice of Kalpavas—spanning from Chaitra Purnima to Vaishakh Purnima—along with daily ritual bathing in the holy Shipra River, holds immense spiritual significance. It is believed that any individual who resides here during the month of Vaishakh attains a spiritual state akin to the very embodiment of Lord Shiva himself.
