शरीर क्या है? कुछ सतत परिवर्तनशील परमाणुओं की समष्टि मात्र है। नदी के दृष्टांत से यह तत्व सहज बोधगम्य हो सकता है। तुम अपने सामने नदी की जलराशि को देखो, पल भर में वह चली गई और उसकी जगह एक नई जलराशि आ गई। जो जलराशि आई, वह संपूर्ण नई है, परंतु देखने में पहली जलराशि की तरह है। शरीर भी ठीक इसी तरह सतत परिवर्तनशील है। मगर उसके परिवर्तनशील होने पर भी उसे स्वस्थ रखना आवश्यक है, क्योंकि शरीर की सहायता से ही हमें ज्ञान की प्राप्ति करनी होगी। यही हमारे पास सर्वोत्तम साधन है।
सब प्रकार के शरीर में मानव शरीर ही श्रेष्ठतम है; मनुष्य ही श्रेष्ठतम जीव है। देवताओं को भी ज्ञान लाभ के लिए मनुष्य देह
धारण करनी पड़ती है। एकमात्र मनुष्य ही ज्ञान लाभ का अधिकारी है। यहूदियों और मुसलमानों के मतानुसार, ईश्वर ने देवदूत और अन्य समस्त सृष्टि के बाद मनुष्य की सृष्टि की। और मनुष्य के सृजन के बाद उसने देवदूतों से मनुष्य को प्रणाम करके आने के लिए कहा। इबलीस को छोड़कर बाकी सब ने ऐसा किया। अतएव ईश्वर नेइबलीस को अभिशाप दे दिया। इससे वह शैतान बन गया।
इस रूपक के पीछे यह महान सत्य निहित है कि संसार में मनुष्य-जन्म ही अन्य सभी जन्मों की अपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ है। पशु आदि योनियां मंद बुद्धि की हैं। ये प्रधानतः तम से निर्मित हुई हैं। देवदूत या देवता भी मनुष्य जन्म लिए बिना मुक्ति लाभ नहीं कर सकते। इसी तरह मनुष्य समाज में भी अत्यधिक धन अथवा अत्यधिक दरिद्रता आत्मा के उच्चतर विकास में महान बाधक है। संसार में जितने महात्मा पैदा हुए हैं, सभी मध्यम वर्ग से हुए थे। मध्यम वर्गवालों में सब शक्तियां समायोजित और संतुलित रहती हैं।

What is the body? It is just a collection of some constantly changing atoms. This element can be easily understood by the example of a river. You look at the water in the river in front of you, in a moment it is gone and in its place a new water has come. The water that has come is completely new, but looks like the first water. The body is also constantly changing in the same way. But despite its changing, it is necessary to keep it healthy, because it is with the help of the body that we have to acquire knowledge. This is the best means we have.
Among all types of bodies, the human body is the best; man is the best creature. Even the gods have to take human form to gain knowledge. Only man is entitled to gain knowledge. According to the belief of Jews and Muslims, God created man after angels and all other creations. And after the creation of man, he asked the angels to come to man after paying obeisance. All did so except Iblis. Therefore, God cursed Iblis. Due to this, he became Satan.
Behind this metaphor lies the great truth that human birth is superior to all other births in the world. Animals and other species are of weak intellect. They are primarily created from darkness. Even angels or gods cannot attain salvation without taking human birth. Similarly, in human society too, excessive wealth or extreme poverty is a great obstacle in the higher development of the soul. All the great souls born in the world were from the middle class. All the powers remain adjusted and balanced in the people of the middle class.
