सही नीयत अच्छे फल
एक व्यापारी बहुत कर्ज में था और साहूकार बड़ा खतरनाक आदमी था। एक सुबह साहूकार व्यापारी के पास आया। सर्दियों की सुबह थी। व्यापारी अपने छोटे से बगीचे में धूप में बैठा हुआ था। जहां वह बैठा था, वहां बाग में काले-सफेद पत्थर करीने से लगे हुए थे। उसकी सुंदर युवा बेटी भी उसके साथ बैठी हुई थी। साहूकार तो उसे धमकी देने आया था कि यदि उसने समय-सीमा के भीतर धन नहीं चुकाया, तो उसे 20 साल के लिए जेल में डाल दिया जाएगा, लेकिन वह उसकी सुंदर बेटी को देखकर मुग्ध हो गया।
ही उसने प्रस्ताव रखा, ‘मैं जानता हूं कि तुम अपना कर्ज नहीं चुका सकते और मैं यह भी जानता हूंकि कानूनी तौर पर तुम्हें कम से कम बीस साल के लिए जेल में डाला जा सकता है। तुम अभी सत्तर साल के करीब हो। जेल में तुम्हारा जीवन बीत जाएगा। मैं दयालु हूं, मैंने हमेशा ही तुम पर दया दिखाई है। मैं तुम्हें एक अवसर दूंगा। मैं बाग से दो पत्थर लूंगा- एक सफेद और एक काला। उनको अपने झोले में डालूंगा और फिर तुम्हारी बेटी को झोले में से एक पत्थर निकालना होगा। अगर वह सफेद पत्थर निकालती है, तो तुम है, तो तुम कर्ज से मुक्त हो जाओगे और तुम्हारी बेटी को भी कुछ नहीं होगा। अगर वह काला पत्थर निकालती है, तो तुम कर्ज से मुक्त हो जाओगे, लेकिन तुम्हें अपनी बेटी का विवाह मुझसे करना होगा।’ बहुत झिझकते हुए पिता और बेटी मान गए, क्योंकि और कोई चारा ही न था। साहूकार ने दो पत्थर लिए। जब वह दो पत्थर ले रहा था, तब बूढ़ा व्यापारी नहीं देख पाया, क्योंकि उसकी आंखों में आंसू भरे हुए थे, लेकिन लड़की की तेज आंखों ने देख लिया कि साहूकार ने दो काले ही पत्थर उठाए हैं। अब ऐसी स्थिति में सामान्य तर्क विफल हो जाता है। क्या किया जाए? झोले में दोनों काले पत्थर हैं। सामान्य तर्क कहता है कि साहूकार का भांडा फोड़ दिया जाए, लेकिन तब वह नाराज हो जाता और बदला लेते हुए व्यापारी को तुरंत जेल में डाल देता। उसे नाराज करना ठीक नहीं था। फिर क्या किया जाए? क्योंकि निकलना तो काला पत्थर ही है।
लड़की ने भांडा नहीं फोड़ा, न ही उसने कोई बहस की कि उसने दोनों काले पत्थर झोले में क्यों डाले? उसने झोलेसे एक पत्थर निकाला और कंपकंपाते हाथों से उसे जमीन पर गिरा दिया- वह बाकी पत्थरों में मिल गया। वहां कई पत्थर थे। उसे खोज पाना असंभव था। वह जोर-जोर से क्षमा मांगने लगी। उसने एक समाधान सुझाया कि झोले में जो पत्थर बचा है, हम वह देख लेते हैं। यदि वह काला है, तो जो मैंने निकाला, वह सफेद रहा होगा। यदि वह सफेद है, तो दूसरा काला रहा होगा। साहूकार कुछ भी न कर पाया। वह विफल हो गया। गलत नीयत से अच्छे फल नहीं मिलते।
लड़की ने भांडा नहीं फोड़ा, न ही उसने कोई बहस की। उसने झोले से एक पत्थर निकाला और कंपकंपाते हाथों से उसे जमीन पर गिरा दिया, वह बाकी पत्थरों में मिल गया।
A merchant was deeply in debt, and his moneylender was a rather dangerous man. One morning, the moneylender came to visit the merchant. It was a winter morning. The merchant was sitting in the sunlight in his small garden. The spot where he sat was paved with neatly arranged black and white stones. His beautiful young daughter was sitting there with him. The moneylender had come to threaten him—warning that if he failed to repay the money within the stipulated time, he would be thrown into prison for twenty years—but upon seeing the merchant’s beautiful daughter, he became captivated.
He immediately put forward a proposal: “I know that you cannot repay your debt, and I also know that, legally speaking, you could be imprisoned for at least twenty years. You are nearly seventy years old now; your entire remaining life would be spent behind bars. I am a compassionate man; I have always shown you mercy. I will offer you a chance. I will select two stones from the garden—one white and one black. I will place them into my pouch, and then your daughter must reach into the pouch and draw out a single stone. If she draws the white stone, you will be absolved of your debt, and no harm will come to your daughter. If she draws the black stone, you will still be absolved of your debt, but you must give your daughter’s hand in marriage to me.” With great hesitation, the father and daughter agreed, for they had no other choice. The moneylender picked up two stones. As he was selecting the stones, the old merchant could not see clearly, for his eyes were filled with tears; however, the girl’s sharp eyes noticed that the moneylender had, in fact, picked up two black stones. Now, in such a situation, conventional logic fails. What was to be done? Both stones in the pouch were black. Conventional logic suggested exposing the moneylender’s deceit; however, doing so would only enrage him, and in an act of retaliation, he would immediately have the merchant thrown into prison. Angering him was not a wise course of action. So, what could be done? After all, whichever stone was drawn, it was bound to be black. The girl did not expose the deception, nor did she offer any argument as to why she had placed both black stones into the bag. She drew a stone from the bag and, with trembling hands, let it fall to the ground—where it blended in with the other stones. There were many stones lying there; finding the specific one was impossible. She began pleading profusely for forgiveness. She then proposed a solution: “Let us simply look at the stone remaining in the bag. If it is black, then the one I dropped must have been white. If it is white, then the other one must have been black.” The moneylender was rendered helpless; he had been outwitted. Ill intentions never yield good results.
The girl did not expose the deception, nor did she offer any argument. She drew a stone from the bag and, with trembling hands, let it fall to the ground, where it blended in with the other stones.
