आत्मज्ञान ही वास्तविक धन
महर्षि याज्ञवल्क्य की दो पत्नियां थीं- मैत्रेयी और कात्यायनी। मैत्रेयी पतिभक्त और शुद्ध आचार-विचार वाली थी। सत्य और अहिंसा को ही अपना धर्म मानती थी। मृदु भाषण और मृदु व्यवहार भी करती थी। कात्यायनी अपने सुख को ही सर्वोपरि मानती थी। पति को तो मानती थी, पर पति के विचारों के अनुसार चलती नहीं थी। उसका कहना था कि पत्नी के अपने विचार होते हैं।
यह आवश्यक नहीं है कि वह पति के ही विचारों को मानकर जीवन-पथ पर चले।
गार्हस्थ्य जीवन में रहते हुए जब बहुत दिन बीत गए, तो याज्ञवल्क्य ने संन्यास लेने का निश्चय किया। संन्यास लेने के पश्चात दोनों पत्नियों में संपत्ति को लेकर झगड़ा न हो, इसलिए याज्ञवल्क्य ने संन्यास लेने के पूर्व दोनों पत्नियों में अपनी संपत्ति का बंटवारा करने का निश्चय किया।
याज्ञवल्क्य ने अपनी दोनों पत्नियों को अपने पास बुलाकर कहा, ‘मैंने संन्यास लेने का निश्चय किया है। संन्यास लेने के पहले मैं अपनी संपत्ति तुम दोनों में बराबर-बराबर बांट देना चाहता हूं। तुम दोनों के क्या विचार हैं?’
कात्यायनी ने कहा, ‘आपने ठीक ही सोचा है, स्वामी ! अपनी इच्छानुसार बंटवारा कर दीजिए।’
पति की बात सुनकर मैत्रेयी मौन ही रही। उसने कुछ भी उत्तर नहीं दिया।
याज्ञवल्क्य ने मैत्रेयी की ओर देखते हुए प्रश्न किया, ‘मैत्रेयी, तुमने कुछ नहीं कहा। तुम क्या सोच रही हो ?’
वास्तव में मैत्रेयी मन-ही-मन सोच रही थी, ‘स्वामी संन्यास लेने से पहले अपनी सारी संपत्ति हम दोनों को दे देना चाहते हैं। वे ऐसा क्यों कर रहे हैं? मनुष्य किसी वस्तु को तभी छोड़ता है, जब उसे उससे भी कोई अच्छी वस्तु मिलती है। अवश्य, स्वामी के पास कोई ऐसा धन है, जिसके सामने लौकिक संपत्ति तुच्छ है, पर वह धन क्या है?’
मैत्रेयी ने सोचते हुए उत्तर दिया, ‘स्वामी, एक बात पूहूं, क्या, आप बताएंगे ?’
याज्ञवल्क्य ने कहा, ‘पूछो मैत्रेयी ! तुम जो कुछ पूछोगी, ‘पूछो मैत्रेय उसका उत्तर मैं अवश्य दूंगा।’
मैत्रेयी ने कहा, ‘स्वामी, क्या मैं जान सकती हूं कि आप अपनी संपत्ति का त्याग क्यों कर रहे हैं?’
याज्ञवल्क्य ने उत्तर दिया, ‘मैंने आत्मा का अमर ज्ञान प्राप्त कर लिया है। मुझे अब लौकिक संपत्ति की आवश्यकता नहीं है, क्योंकि यह संपत्ति तो नाशवान है।’
मैत्रेयी ने सोचते हुए कहा, ‘स्वामी, जब यह संपत्ति नाशवान है, तो आप मुझे क्यों दे रहे हैं? आप मुझे जो संपत्ति दे रहे हैं, क्या उससे मुझे वास्तविक सुख मिलेगा ?’
याज्ञवल्क्य ने उत्तर दिया, ‘नहीं मैत्रेयी, उससे तुम्हें वास्तविक सुख नहीं मिलेगा। लौकिक संपत्ति से कभी वास्तविक सुख नहीं मिलता।’
मैत्रेयी ने कहा, ‘फिर मैं उसे लेकर क्या करूंगी, स्वामी ? आप मेरा भाग भी बहन कात्यायनी को दे दीजिए। मुझे तो वह संपत्ति दे दीजिए, जिसका विनाश न हो और जिससे वास्तविक सुख की प्राप्ति हो।’
याज्ञवल्क्य ने कहा, ‘वह संपत्ति तो आत्मज्ञान है, मैत्रेयी ! तो तुम आत्मज्ञानरूपी धन चाहती हो ?’
मैत्रेयी ने उत्तर दिया, ‘स्वामी, आप जिस धन के लिए अपनी संपत्ति का त्याग कर रहे हैं, जिस धन का विनाश नहीं होता और जिससे वास्तविक सुख की प्राप्ति होती है, मुझे उसी आत्मा के ज्ञानरूपी धन को दीजिए।’
याज्ञवल्क्य प्रसन्न हो उठे। उन्होंने मधुर स्वर में कहा, ‘मैत्रेयी, तुम मुझे सदा प्रिय रही हो, आज और भी अधिक प्रिय हो गई हो। मैं तुम्हें आत्मज्ञान रूपी धन अवश्य दूंगा।’
याज्ञवल्क्य ने मैत्रेयी को आत्मा का ज्ञान देकर उसके जीवन को धन्य बना दिया।

Maharishi Yajnavalkya had two wives—Maitreyi and Katyayani. Maitreyi was devoted to her husband and possessed pure thoughts and conduct. She considered truth and non-violence as her religion. She also spoke and behaved gently. Katyayani considered her own happiness paramount. She respected her husband, but did not follow his ideas. She believed that a wife has her own thoughts and it is not necessary for her to follow her husband’s ideas on the path of life.
After many years of married life, Yajnavalkya decided to renounce the world. To prevent any dispute between his two wives over property after his renunciation, Yajnavalkya decided to divide his property equally between them before taking sannyasa (renunciation).
Yajnavalkya called his two wives to him and said, “I have decided to renounce the world. Before taking sannyasa, I want to divide my property equally between the two of you. What are your thoughts?”
Katyayani said, “You have thought correctly, my lord! Divide it as you wish.”
Maitreyi remained silent after hearing her husband’s words. She did not give any answer.
Yajnavalkya looked at Maitreyi and asked, “Maitreyi, you haven’t said anything. What are you thinking?”
In reality, Maitreyi was thinking to herself, “My husband wants to give us all his property before renouncing the world. Why is he doing this? A person only gives up something when they find something better. Surely, my husband possesses some wealth that makes worldly possessions seem insignificant, but what is that wealth?”
Maitreyi, still thinking, replied, “My lord, may I ask you something? Will you tell me?”
Yajnavalkya said, “Ask, Maitreyi! Whatever you ask, I will surely answer.” Maitreyi said, “Lord, may I know why you are renouncing your possessions?”
Yajnavalkya replied, “I have attained the immortal knowledge of the Self. I no longer need worldly possessions, for this wealth is perishable.”
Maitreyi, reflecting, said, “Lord, if this wealth is perishable, why are you giving it to me? Will the wealth you are giving me bring me true happiness?”
Yajnavalkya replied, “No, Maitreyi, it will not bring you true happiness. Worldly possessions never bring true happiness.”
Maitreyi said, “Then what will I do with it, Lord? Please give my share also to my sister Katyayani. Give me that wealth which is imperishable and which brings true happiness.”
Yajnavalkya said, “That wealth is self-knowledge, Maitreyi! So you desire the wealth of self-knowledge?”
Maitreyi replied, “Lord, the wealth for which you are renouncing your possessions, the wealth that is imperishable and which brings true happiness—give me that wealth of the knowledge of the Self.”
Yajnavalkya was delighted. He said in a gentle voice, “Maitreyi, you have always been dear to me, and today you have become even dearer. I will certainly give you the wealth of self-knowledge.”
Yajnavalkya blessed Maitreyi’s life by imparting to her the knowledge of the Self.
