शंकर ने आदि शंकर को दिया ज्ञान
शंकराचार्य प्रतिदिन गंगा में स्नान करके तर्पण करते थे। सूर्योदय से पूर्व उनकी संध्या-पूजा पूर्ण हो जाती। एक दिन सूर्योदय होते-होते वे पूजा समाप्त करके विश्वनाथ मंदिर जा रहे थे। उन्होंने देखा कि गली में शमशान घाट में काम करने वाला एक व्यक्ति चार कुत्तों को चारों दिशाओं में बिठाए हुए रास्ता रोके खड़ा है। शंकराचार्य ने बहुत नम्र भाव से कहा, ‘आप एक ओर हट जाएं तो मैं विश्वनाथजी के दर्शन करने चला जाऊं।’ उस व्यक्ति ने शुद्ध संस्कृत में उनका प्रतिवाद करते हुए कहा, ‘ओ संन्यासी! मार्ग से किसे हटा रहे हो? मेरे इस शरीर को या इसकी आत्मा को? हमने तुम्हारा शास्त्रार्थ सुना है। तुम्हारा सिद्धांत है कि वह पूर्ण ब्रह्म सर्वत्र सब में, तुम में और मुझ में एक समान विद्यमान है। तुम मुझे इस तरह दूर भगा रहे हो, मानो मैं तुमसे भिन्न कोई और हूं? तुम इस शरीर को हटाना चाहते हो, जो अन्न से बना हुआ है। जो मांस-मज्जा तुम्हारे शरीर में है, वही मेरे में है। यदि तुम शुद्ध चैतन्य को अलग करना चाहते हो, तो वह यहां-वहां सर्वत्र है। तुम किसे हटाना चाहते हो? क्या इस पवित्र गंगा में प्रतिबिंबित सूर्य की आभा उस बिंब से अलग है, जो मेरे निवास स्थान के समीप एक गंदे तालाब में पड़ती हुई दिखाई दे रही है?’
उस व्यक्ति की अकाट्य युक्ति सुन कर और संस्कृत भाषा का शुद्ध व्यवहार देखकर शंकर स्तंभित रह गए। उनकी आंखें आश्चर्य से विस्फारित हो उठीं। उन्होंने उसे प्रणाम किया। उन्हें यह देखकर बहुत प्रसन्नता हुई कि इस नगरी के सबसे निम्न वर्ग में भी वेदांत की ध्वनि गूंज रही है। उन्होंने उसकी स्तुति में पांच श्लोकों अर्थात ‘मनीषा पंचक’ की रचना की। उस व्यक्ति को गुरु रूप में स्वीकार करते हुए कहा, ‘ब्रह्म सच्चिदानंद है, वह सर्वत्र विद्यमान है। अतः मुझ में और तुम में कोई भेद नहीं।’ ‘मनीषा पंचक’ नामक स्तोत्र में ब्रह्म की विलक्षण व्याख्या की गई है।
ज्यों ही ‘मनीषा पंचक’ के पांचों श्लोक समाप्त हुए, वह व्यक्ति न जाने कहां अंतर्धान हो गया। उसके स्थान पर भगवान शिव स्वयं प्रकट हो गए। उन्होंने आचार्य शंकर को आशीर्वाद देते हुए यह आज्ञा दी कि जनता में और विशेषकर पंडे-पुजारी समाज में, जो अंधविश्वास फैला है, शास्त्र का मर्म बिना समझे यज्ञ-हवन, कर्मकांड की जो प्रक्रिया जनता को भ्रम में डाल रही है, जिसके कारण देश अज्ञान के अंधकार में डूबता चला जा रहा है। इसकी सारी राजनीतिक, धार्मिक, सामाजिक और आर्थिक शक्तियां धीरे-धीरे विलुप्त होती जा रही हैं। उनका संस्कार करने के लिए वेद-शास्त्र का बुद्धिसंगत अर्थ करना होगा। आध्यात्मिक दृष्टि का इतना लोप होता जा रहा है कि अंधविश्वास को ही जनता शास्त्र का प्राथमिक अर्थ मानने लगी है।
भगवान शंकर के दर्शन से आचार्य शंकर को बहुत बल मिला। शंकराचार्य को आदेश देकर भगवान शंकर अंतर्धान हो गए। शंकराचार्य भगवान शंकर की उस दैवी मूर्ति का ध्यान करते हुए अपनी पर्णकुटी में लौट आए।

Shankaracharya would bathe in the Ganges and perform Tarpan (ritual oblations) every day. His Sandhya-puja (evening worship) would be completed before sunrise. One day, just as the sun was rising, he finished his worship and was making his way to the Vishwanath Temple. He noticed that, in the lane, a man who worked at the cremation ground stood blocking the path, with four dogs seated in the four cardinal directions around him. Shankaracharya spoke with great humility: “If you would kindly step aside, I may proceed to have the Darshan (sacred sight) of Lord Vishwanath.” Countering him in flawless Sanskrit, the man replied, “O Sannyasi! Whom are you asking to move from the path? This body of mine, or the soul within it? We have heard your scriptural debates. Your own doctrine asserts that the Supreme Brahman—the Absolute Reality—is omnipresent, existing equally in all beings: in you, and in me. Yet, you are driving me away as if I were someone distinct and different from you? You wish to move this physical body, which is composed of food. The very same flesh and marrow that constitute your body exist within mine. If it is the pure Consciousness—the Chaitanya—that you wish to separate, then it is everywhere—here, there, and everywhere else. Whom, then, do you seek to move? Is the radiance of the sun reflected in the sacred Ganges any different from the reflection visible in the murky pond near my humble dwelling?”
Upon hearing the man’s irrefutable logic and witnessing his impeccable command of the Sanskrit language, Shankar stood utterly transfixed. His eyes widened in sheer astonishment. He bowed down in reverence before the man. He was filled with immense joy to realize that the resonance of Vedanta—the ultimate wisdom—was echoing even among the lowest strata of society within that very city. In praise of the man, he composed a set of five verses known as the Manisha Panchakam. Accepting the man as his Guru, he declared, “Brahman is Satchidananda—Existence, Consciousness, and Bliss Absolute; it is omnipresent. Therefore, there exists no distinction whatsoever between you and me.” The hymn titled Manisha Panchakam offers a profound and unique exposition of the nature of Brahman. No sooner had the five verses of the ‘Manisha Panchakam’ concluded than that mysterious figure vanished into thin air. In his stead, Lord Shiva Himself manifested. Bestowing His blessings upon Acharya Shankara, He issued a divine command: address the superstitions that have permeated the masses—particularly within the community of priests and temple custodians—and counter the ritualistic practices of Yajna and Havan which, performed without any true understanding of scriptural essence, are leading the public astray. Consequently, the nation is sinking deeper into the darkness of ignorance, and all its political, religious, social, and economic strengths are gradually fading away. To rectify this situation, the Vedas and scriptures must be interpreted through the lens of reason and intellect. The spiritual perspective has eroded to such an extent that the masses have come to accept mere superstition as the primary and authentic meaning of the scriptures.
The divine vision of Lord Shankara imbued Acharya Shankara with immense strength. Having issued these directives to Shankaracharya, Lord Shankara vanished from sight. Meditating upon that divine form of Lord Shankara, Shankaracharya returned to his humble leaf-hut.
