साहित्य जगत में शायद ही कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति होगा, जिसने साहित्य-सम्राट जार्ज बर्नार्ड शा का नाम न सुना हो, अथवा उनकी रचनाओं का आस्वादन न किया हो। अतः यह समाचार विश्व के सभी देशों में अत्यन्त शोकपूर्वक सुना जायेगा कि पैनी कलम का धनी, एक महान साहित्यकार उनके बीच से उठ गया। 26 जुलाई को उन्होंने अपनी 94वीं वर्षगांठ मनाई थी।

उनका आहार-विहार बहुत नियमित था और वही उनकी दीर्घायु का सबसे बड़ा रहस्य था। स्वास्थ्य के नियमों के संबंध में वह डाक्टरों तक को सलाह दे सकते थे। कुछ सप्ताह पूर्व वह घूमते हुए फिसल पड़े थे, जिससे उनकी जांघ की हड्डी टूट गई थी। यदि यह दुर्घटना न हुई होती, तो संभव था कि वह कुछ समय और जीवित रह जाते। वैसे वृद्धावस्था ने उन्हें पहले ही सावधान कर दिया था। अपनी, 93वीं वर्षगांठ के बाद उन्होंने एक पत्र-प्रतिनिधि से कहा था-‘मौत मेरा दर्वाजा खटखटा रही है, किन्तु वह मेरे लिए अप्रिय अतिथि न होगी। इसी मंगलवार को, जब उनकी अवस्था चिन्ताजनक हो गई थी, उन्होंने अपनी एक महिला मित्र के सम्मुख यह उत्कट कामना प्रकट की थी कि उन्हें निद्रा की आवश्यकता है। उनकी यह कामना भगवान ने पूरी कर दी और वह महानिद्रा में सो गये हैं। जांघ की हड्डी टूट जाने के कारण शा को जो धक्का लगा, उसके बाद उन्होंने कहा था कि यदि मैं इस धक्के से बच गया, तो अमर हो जाऊंगा। किन्तु प्रकृति के नियम अटल हैं और पंच तत्वों से निर्मित इस शरीर का अन्त अनिवार्य था। क्या हुआ यदि शा का शरीर नहीं रहा, किन्तु शा अपनी अनमोल रचनाओं के द्वारा अमर हो गये हैं।

जार्ज बर्नार्ड शा को जन्म देने का सौभाग्य आयलैण्ड को प्राप्त हुआ था, किन्तु उन्होंने इंग्लैण्ड को अपना निवास-स्थान बना लिया था। इंग्लैण्ड इस बात पर गर्व कर सकता है कि शेक्सपियर के बाद उसने विश्व को सबसे बड़ा नाटककार दिया है। उन्होंने पचास नाटक लिखे हैं, और उनका संसार की प्रायः हर भाषा में अनुवाद हुआ है। उनके नाटकों पर से फिल्में तैयार हुई हैं और वे रंगमंच पर खेले भी गये हैं। शा की लिखने की अपनी अनोखी शैली थी। गम्भीर-से-गम्भीर तथ्यों को उन्होंने हल्के-फुल्के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया। उनकी भाषा में व्यंग्य की गहरी पुट रहती थी।

There is hardly anyone in the literary world who has not heard the name of the literary giant George Bernard Shaw or enjoyed his works. Therefore, the news that a great literary figure, possessed of a sharp pen, has passed away will be heard with great sadness in all countries of the world. He celebrated his 94th birthday on July 26th.

His diet and lifestyle were strictly regulated, and this was the greatest secret of his longevity. He could even advise doctors on health rules. A few weeks ago, he slipped while walking, breaking his thigh bone. Had this accident not occurred, it was possible he would have lived a little longer. However, old age had already warned him. After his 93rd birthday, he told a journalist, “Death is knocking at my door, but it will not be an unwelcome guest.” On this very Tuesday, when his condition had become critical, he had expressed his fervent wish to a female friend that he needed sleep. God granted his wish, and he fell into deep sleep. After the shock that broke his thigh bone, Shaw had said, “If I survive this blow, I will become immortal.” But the laws of nature are immutable, and the end of this body, composed of five elements, was inevitable. What if Shaw’s body is no longer there, but Shaw has become immortal through his precious works.

Ireland was fortunate to give birth to George Bernard Shaw, but he made England his home. England can be proud that after Shakespeare, it has given the world its greatest playwright. He wrote fifty plays, and they have been translated into almost every language. His plays have been made into films and staged. Shaw had a unique writing style. He presented even the most serious facts in a light-hearted manner. His language was deeply tinged with satire.
