सरदार पटेल का जाना

सरदार पटेल हमारे बीच में नहीं रहे। उनकी बीमारी के समाचारों पर सारा देश चिन्ताकुल था। करोड़ों हृदय उनके स्वास्थ्य लाभ और दीर्घायुष्य के लिए प्रार्थना कर रहे थे। किन्तु विधाता ने देश की प्रार्थना को नहीं सुना और सरदार पटेल को हमसे छीन लिया। जिस समय देश को उनकी सबसे अधिक जरूरत थी, उस समय उनका उठे जाना देश के लिए अनभ्य वज्रपात है। उनके चले जाने से देश की गम्भीर हानि हुई है, जिसकी पूर्ति होना असम्भव नजर आता है।

गांधीजी के बाद देश की समस्त आशाएं नेहरू और पटेल पर केन्द्रित थीं। दोनों राष्ट्र की नौका को तूफानों के बीच कुशलतापूर्वक खेये चले जा रहे थे। दोनों में अपनी-अपनी विशेषताएं थीं। वे एक-दूसरे की कमियों की पूर्ति करते थे और देश को स्वस्थ नेतृत्व प्रदान करते थे। आज देश के नेतृत्व के गुरुतर दायित्व को वहन करने के लिए नेहरूजी अकेले रह गये हैं। उनकी एक बलवान भुजा उनसे छिन गयी है। एक कुशल मल्लाह का छिन जाना राष्ट्र की नौका के लिए महती विपत्ति का संकेत है। सरदार पटेल का जीवन भारत की आजादी की लड़ाई के इतिहास से इस तरह गुंथा हुआ रहा है कि दोनों को जुदा नहीं किया जा सकता। गांधीजी की प्रेरणा और छत्रछाया के नीचे उन्होंने देश के सार्वजनिक जीवन में प्रवेश किया और गांधीजी के… दायें हाथ बन कर रहे।

उन्होंने अनेक छोटी-मोटी लड़ाइयों का सेनापतित्व किया और इस कारण गांधीजी ने ही उन्हें सरदार का विशेषण प्रदान किया, जिसे सारे राष्ट्र ने सहज ही स्वीकार कर लिया। आत्म-विश्वास और निर्भयता के गुण उनकी नस-नस में व्याप्त थे। उनकी वाणी में वह तेज और प्रखरता थी, जो मुर्दा नसों में भी जान डाल देती थी। उनमें अद्भुत संगठन शक्ति थी और उसी के बल पर उन्होंने अनेक लड़ाइयों में सफलता हासिल की थी। उन्होंने गुजरात के एक सामान्य किसान-परिवार में जन्म लिया था और इसलिए उन्हें किसान की कर्मठ शक्ति विरासत में मिली थी। वह धरती के आदमी थे और उनका पांव हमेशा धरती पर ही टिका रहा। इसीलिए वह देश की आम जनता के बीच पूरी तरह समा गये थे, उसके अपने बन गये थे। किसान उन्हें अपने में से एक समझते थे। गांधीजी ने स्वराज्य की लड़ाई के लिए बारदोली को अपनी प्रयोगशाला चुना था। इस प्रयोगशाला की जमीन वल्लभ भाई पटेल के हाथों तैयार हुई थी।

Sardar Patel is no longer with us. The entire nation was anxious about the news of his illness. Millions of hearts were praying for his recovery and long life. But fate did not heed the nation’s prayers and snatched Sardar Patel away from us. His passing at a time when the country needed him most is an unbearable blow. His death has caused a grave loss to the nation, one that seems impossible to overcome.

After Gandhiji, all the nation’s hopes were centered on Nehru and Patel. Both were skillfully steering the ship of the nation through stormy seas. Each had their own unique qualities. They complemented each other’s weaknesses and provided sound leadership to the country. Today, Nehruji is left alone to bear the heavy responsibility of leading the nation. He has lost a strong arm. The loss of such a skilled navigator is a great misfortune for the ship of the nation. Sardar Patel’s life is so intertwined with the history of India’s freedom struggle that the two cannot be separated. Under Gandhiji’s inspiration and guidance, he entered public life and became Gandhiji’s right-hand man.

He led many battles, both big and small, and it was Gandhiji himself who bestowed upon him the title of Sardar, which the entire nation readily accepted. Self-confidence and fearlessness permeated his very being. His voice possessed a power and intensity that could breathe life into even the most lifeless. He possessed extraordinary organizational skills, and it was through these skills that he achieved success in numerous struggles. He was born into an ordinary farmer’s family in Gujarat, and therefore inherited the industrious spirit of a farmer. He was a man of the earth, and his feet always remained firmly planted on the ground. That is why he was completely integrated with the common people of the country; he became one of them. Farmers considered him one of their own. Gandhiji had chosen Bardoli as his laboratory for the struggle for Swaraj (self-rule). The groundwork for this laboratory was laid by Vallabhbhai Patel.
