ईश्वर क्या-क्या सुनें
भक्ति कोई क्रिया-कलाप नहीं है। यह किसी एक या दूसरी चीज की ओर नहीं होती; भक्ति किसके प्रति है, यह महत्वपूर्ण नहीं है। बस, इतना ही है कि भक्ति में आप अपने भीतर के सारे विरोध विसर्जित कर देते हैं, जिससे चैतन्य सांसों को तरह बह सके। ईश्वर ऊपर बैठी कोईके इकाई नहीं है। यह आपके जीवन में हर पल मौजूद एक जीवंत शक्ति है।
एक कैथोलिक परिवार के घर रात के खाने के वक्त परिवार का मुखिया टेबल पर आया, खाने की तरफ देखा, हमेशा की तरह भुनभुनाया और अपनी पत्नी व आस-पास की हर चीज को कोसा। जब कोसना पूरा हुआ और सब अपनी-अपनी जगह बैठ गए, तब वह भी बैठा और प्रार्थना करते हुए बोला, हे ईश्वर, आज का भोजन और टेबल पर मौजूद सारी अच्छी चीजें देने के लिए धन्यवाद।
वहां पांच साल की एक बच्ची भी बैठी थी। आपने देखा होगा, नन्हे बच्चों के लिए हमेशा एक तकिया या कुशन कुर्सी पर रखा जाता है, ताकि वे टेबल तक पहुंच सकें, फिर भी प्लेट तक पहुंचना उनके लिए मुश्किल होता है। उस पांच साल की बच्ची ने टेबल से अपना चेहरा ऊपर लाकर कहा, ‘डैड़ी, क्याईश्वर हमेशा हमारी प्रार्थनाएं सुनते हैं?’ पिता ने कहा, ‘हां, क्यों नहीं? हम जितनी भी प्रार्थना करते हैं, वह हमेशा उन्हें सुनता है।’ तब वह लड़की नीचे हो गई, क्योंकि वह विचारों में डूब गई थी। कुछ देर बाद वह ऊपर उचकी और पूछा, ‘डेडी, क्या वह वह दूसरी बातें भी सुनता है, जो हम कहते हैं?’ पिता ने दोहराया, ‘हां, ईश्वर हमारे जीवन के हर पल में होने वाली उन सभी बातों को देखता और सुनता है, जो हम कहते हैं या करते हैं।’ बच्ची फिर नीचे हो गई और उसने फिर उचककर पूछा, ‘डैडी, तब वह किन बातों पर विश्वास करता है?’
मुझे बताइए, ईश्वर को किस पर विश्वास करना चाहिए- आपकी प्रार्थना पर या आपकी गालियों पर ? वह भ्रमित है। उसने हार मान ली है, क्योंकि हमने जीवन सबसे प्यारे और नाजुक हिस्से को भी प्रणालीबद्ध या संस्थागत बना दिया है। सबके मुंह में शब्द होते हैं, पर उन शब्दों के कोई मायने नहीं रह जाते। जब हम कोई चीज कहते हैं, जो हमारे भीतर वाकई आग की तरह नहीं जलती, तो वह झूठ बोलने जैसा है, तब चुप रहना बेहतर होता है।
हम हमेशा वह चीज करने की कोशिश करते हैं, जो किसी ने हजार साल पहले की थी। हां, किसी ने दो हजार साल पहले कुछ किया, तो वह उसके लिए कारगर हुआ, क्योंकि उसके। उसके हृदय में उसके लिए आग थी; थी; क्योंकि उसके भीतर सच्चाई घघक रही थी, न कि उसके शब्दों की वजह से। भक्ति भी तपाने वाली होती है, क्योंकि सत्य ऐसी चीज है, जिसमें आग है।

Devotion is not an activity. It is not directed towards one thing or another; it doesn’t matter who or what the devotion is directed towards. It simply means that in devotion, you dissolve all the contradictions within yourself, allowing consciousness to flow like breath. God is not some entity sitting up above. It is a living force present in every moment of your life.
At dinner in a Catholic family’s home, the head of the family came to the table, looked at the food, grumbled as usual, and cursed his wife and everything around him. When the cursing was finished and everyone had settled down, he sat down and, in prayer, said, “Thank you, God, for this food and all the good things on the table today.”
A five-year-old girl was also sitting there. You know, little children always have a pillow or cushion on their chair so they can reach the table, but even then, reaching the plate is difficult for them. The five-year-old girl lifted her face from the table and asked, “Daddy, does God always hear our prayers?” The father said, “Yes, of course. He always hears all the prayers we say.” Then the girl lowered her head, lost in thought. After a while, she looked up again and asked, “Daddy, does he also hear the other things we say?” The father repeated, “Yes, God sees and hears everything that happens in every moment of our lives, everything we say or do.” The child lowered her head again and then looked up once more and asked, “Daddy, then what does he believe?”
Tell me, what should God believe—your prayers or your curses? He is confused. He has given up, because we have systematized or institutionalized even the most precious and delicate part of life. Everyone has words in their mouths, but those words have lost all meaning. When we say something that doesn’t truly burn within us like fire, it’s like telling a lie; it’s better to remain silent.
We always try to do what someone did a thousand years ago. Yes, someone did something two thousand years ago, and it worked for them because they had fire in their heart; because truth was blazing within them, not because of their words. Devotion is also purifying because truth is something that has fire in it.
