WhatsApp will now start showing ads in the app. However, there will be no ads in private chats, calls and groups. Meta said that ads will only appear in the ‘Updates’ tab, where 1.5 billion users reach daily. Ads will be shown based on the age, location, language and activity of the users on the channels. Also, channels will be able to charge subscription fees and businessmen will be able to promote their channels. WhatsApp talked about an ad-free platform in 2009.
