An Inauspicious Fortnight

अशुभ पखवाड़ा

पिछले दो सप्ताह भारत के लिए बहुत ही अशुभ सप्ताह रहे। भारत की एक आध्यात्मिक विभूति श्री अरविन्द के अवसान के बाद ही भारतीय स्वाधीनता संग्राम के एक अडिग सेनानी तथा देश की एकता के निर्माता सरदार पटेल ऐसे समय में चल बसे, जबकि अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय तथा राष्ट्रीय संकटपूर्ण स्थितियों को देखते हुए उनकी अत्यधिक आवश्यकता थी।

प्रधानमंत्री नेहरूजी ने संसद में अपने शोकोद्‌गार प्रगट करते हुए कहाः उनके महान जीवन की कहानी समाप्त हो गई। हम सब तथा सारा देश जानता है कि यह एक बड़ी कथा है। इतिहास उसे अपने अगणित पृष्ठों पर अंकित करेगा तथा उन्हें नव भारत का निर्माता और संगठनकर्ता के नाम से पुकारेगा।’ इस तरह राष्ट्रपति ने श्मशानभूमि में कहाः ‘सरदार के शरीर को अग्नि भस्मीभूत कर रही है, किंतु कोई अग्नि उनके यश को नहीं समाप्त कर सकती।’ शारीरिक दृष्टि से सरदार पटेल की मृत्यु हो गई किंतु राष्ट्र के लिए उनकी आत्मा अब भी पथ-प्रदर्शक का कार्य कर सकती है, बशर्ते डा. राजेन्द्र प्रसाद के शब्दों में हम यह समझें कि ‘सारा राष्ट्र उनका परिवार है। अतएव हमें देश की सेवा का वैसा ही प्रण करना चाहिए जैसा कि उन्होंने किया था।’ सरदार पटेल के निधन का समाचार पाकर करोड़ों देशवासियों को जो धक्का लगा है तथा देश जिस प्रकार शोकाकुल हो उठा है, वह स्वाभाविक है; किंतु अपने नेता के प्रति वास्तविक श्रद्धा हम तभी प्रगट कर सकते हैं, जब उनके चरण-चिह्नों पर चलें। राजाजी के इन शब्दों को हमें याद रखना चाहिए ‘वल्लभभाई महान स्फूर्ति, साहस और आत्म-शक्ति के अवतार थे। हम यह न सोचें कि वह नहीं रहे। हमारे परिचित वल्लभभाई के चले जाने पर भी सच्चे वल्लभभाई सदैव जीवित रहेंगे। मौलाना आजाद का यह कथन बिल्कुल ठीक है कि एक शानदार इन्कलाब की दास्तान खत्म हो चुकी किंतु ‘जिस दुनिया में हम चलते-फिरते हैं, उसमें वह दास्तान खत्म हुई है मगर दिमागों और दिलों की दुनिया में वह दास्तान हमेशा जिन्दा रहेगी और याद की जायेगी।’

संसद का कार्यः सरदार पटेल के निधन से संसद में शुक्रवार को कोई कार्य न हुआ और वह सोमवार के लिए स्थगित हो गई।

The past two weeks have been very inauspicious for India. Following the passing of Sri Aurobindo, a spiritual luminary of India, Sardar Patel, an unwavering fighter in India’s freedom struggle and the architect of national unity, passed away at a time when his presence was most needed, given the critical international and national situations.

Prime Minister Nehru, expressing his grief in Parliament, said: “The story of his great life has come to an end. We all, and the entire country, know that it is a great story. History will record it on its countless pages and will call him the builder and organizer of modern India.” Similarly, the President, at the cremation ground, said: “The fire is consuming Sardar’s body, but no fire can extinguish his glory.” Physically, Sardar Patel is no more, but his spirit can still guide the nation, provided, as Dr. Rajendra Prasad said, we understand that “the entire nation is his family. Therefore, we should take the same pledge of service to the country that he did.” The shock felt by millions of countrymen upon hearing the news of Sardar Patel’s death and the grief that has engulfed the nation are natural; but we can show true reverence to our leader only by following in his footsteps. We should remember Rajaji’s words: “Vallabhbhai was an embodiment of great energy, courage, and self-reliance. Let us not think that he is no more. Even though the Vallabhbhai we knew is gone, the true Vallabhbhai will always live on.” Maulana Azad rightly said that the story of a glorious revolution has ended, but “it has ended in the world in which we live and move, but in the world of minds and hearts, that story will always remain alive and will be remembered.”

Parliamentary Proceedings: Due to Sardar Patel’s death, Parliament did not conduct any business on Friday and was adjourned until Monday.
