सुविधा और खुशी
बाजार, बस अड्डे, कॉलेज, मंदिर… चाहे किसी भी जगह थोड़ी देर खड़े हो जाइए। सामने से गुजरने वाले लोगों पर गौर कीजिए। ध्यान से देखिए, कितने चेहरों पर खुशी नाच रही है। सौ लोग निकल गए, तो उनमें से केवल चार-पांच चेहरों पर हंसी दिखेगी। ऐसे चेहरे वाले लोग 20-25 साल से कम उम्र के होते हैं। 30 के पार पहुंचे लोग यूं दिखते हैं, ते हैं, मानो उनका सब कुछ लुट गया है। रुखी नजर से देखते हुए, उदासी और मायूसी से भरी गंभीर मुख-मुद्रा में चलते मिलते हैं, मानो गमी के घर से लौट रहे हों।
अपने किसलिए बाहर जाकर देखना है? खुद आपको आईने में देखिए न! पांच साल की उम्र में आप बगीचे में तितली के पीछे भाग रहे थे, उस समय आपके चेहरे पर जो उल्लास नाच रहा था, क्या वह अब देरहा है? पांच साल की उम्र में तितली को छूते ही उसके मोहक रंग आपके हाथ पर झिलमिलाते हुए चिपक गए। दिखाई उस वक्त आपको यही महसूस हुआ था कि दुनिया में इससे बढ़कर कोई आनंद है ही नहीं। आपके अंदर से खुशी छलक-छलककर बिखर रही थी, हैन ?
पांच वर्ष की आयु में आपके पास क्या था ? आज आपके पास क्या-क्या है? ऊंची पढ़ाई, कंप्यूटर, मकान, गाड़ी, पहली तारीख आते ही बैंक खाते में जमा हो रही तनख्वाह, सोते समय भी साथ रहता सेलफोन… आपने कितना कुछ इकट्ठा कर रखा है! चंद सदियों पहले, सारे जहान को जीतने का दम भरने वाले शहंशाहों को भी इतनी सारी सुविधाएं मयस्सर नहीं थीं। फिर भी क्या आपकी खुशी उसी अनुपात में बढ़ी है?
इसलिए इच्छित वस्तु न मिलने पर यदि आप मुंह लटकाएं फिर रहे हैं, तो यह मूर्खता ही है। वांछित वस्तु मिलने के बाद भी खुशी मनाने का हुनर न जानकर तड़प रहे हैं। इस तरह का एक बंगला चाहिए, उस तरह की एक कार… उनकी तरह सुखमय जीवन। इस बात की परवाह नहीं की कि वह आप पर जंचेगा या नहीं, आपके लायक है भी कि नहीं; बस उसे अपनी प्रकृति बनाना चाहते हैं। किसी ने सलाह दी कि इन दिनों सॉफ्टवेयर बिजनेस जोरों पर है, इसे सुनकर आप उसके लिए तैयार हो रहे है। एक सज्जन आपको दयनीय दृष्टि से देखते हैं और कहते हैं, वह देखिए बदरंग कमीज पहने जो आदमी घूम रहा, उसकी सॉफ्टवेयर इंजीनियर के रूप में अमेरिका में बड़ी धाक थी। मंदी आई और उसे वापस भारत भेज दिया गया। अब वह भुखमरों का संघ बनाने के बारे में सोच रहा है, इसलिए मेरी मानें, तो शेयर बिजनेस शुरू कर दीजिए। शेयर बिजनेस तो सांप-बिच्छू हैं, क्या वे आपको छोड़ देंगे ?
साफ है, अपनी प्रकृति को पहचाने बिना उल्टी दिशा में पतवार चलाते जाएंगे, तो जिंदगी तबाह ही होगी।
चंद सौ साल पहले, सारे जहान को जीतने का दम भरने वाले शहंशाहों को मी इतनी सारी सुविधाएं मयस्सर नहीं थीं, जितनी आज आपको हैं। क्या आपकी खुशी उसी अनुपात में बढ़ी है?

Stand for a while in the market, bus station, college, temple… anywhere. Observe the people passing by. Observe how many faces are filled with joy. If you pass a hundred people, you’ll find only four or five smiling faces. People with such faces are typically under 20 or 25 years old. People over 30 look as if they’ve lost everything. They walk with a stern gaze, a serious expression filled with sadness and despair, as if returning from a funeral.
Why go out to look at yourself? Look at yourself in the mirror! When you were five years old, chasing a butterfly in the garden, does the joy that danced on your face at that time still linger? When you touched a butterfly at five, its enchanting colors shimmered and stuck to your hand. At that moment, you felt that there was no greater joy in the world. Happiness was overflowing from within you, wasn’t it?
What did you have at the age of five? What do you have today? Higher education, a computer, a house, a car, a salary deposited in your bank account on the first of every month, a cell phone with you even while you sleep… you’ve accumulated so much! A few centuries ago, even the emperors who boasted of conquering the entire world didn’t have so many luxuries. Yet, has your happiness increased in the same proportion?
So, if you’re gloomy when you don’t get what you want, it’s foolish. Even after getting what you want, you’re suffering because you don’t know how to celebrate. I want a bungalow like this, a car like that… a life as comfortable as theirs. You don’t care whether it suits you or not, or whether it’s even worthy of you; you just want to make it your nature. Someone suggested that the software business is booming these days, and hearing this, you’re preparing for it. A gentleman looks at you pitifully and says, “Look, that man walking around in a faded shirt, he was very popular in America as a software engineer. The recession hit and he was sent back to India. Now he’s thinking of forming a hungry group. So, if you listen to me, start a stock trading business. Stock trading is full of snakes and scorpions. Will they let you go?
Clearly, if you keep steering in the wrong direction without recognizing your nature, your life will be ruined.
A few hundred years ago, even the emperors who boasted of conquering the entire world did not have as many amenities as you do today. Has your happiness increased in the same proportion?
