आस्था या सौदेबाजी
ईश्वर के साथ आपका कोई प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव नहीं। इसलिए दूसरे लोगों ने जो कहा, उसे स्वीकार करते हुए आपने उन पर विश्वास कर रखा है। आप मंदिर किसलिए जाते हैं? ईश्वर का साक्षात्कार करने के लिए? हेप्रभो, मुझे यह दो, वह दे दो, यही मनौती मांगने के लिए तो जाते हैं। ईश्वर के प्रति आपका जो विश्वास है, वह प्रायः लालच और भय के आधार पर पाला गया है?
अपने घर में आपने देवी-देवताओं के दर्जनों चित्र रखे हैं। इसके बावजूद क्या आपका भय दूर हो गया? ‘भव-भक्ति’ से आप चलाए जाते हैं। यदि ईश्वर प्रेम-स्वरूप है, तो क्या उनके प्रति भक्ति का होना काफी नहीं है? भय किसलिए? जो लोग ईश्वर का अनुभव नहीं कर पाते, वही आज भक्ति के बारे में ज्यादा बोलते हैं। कहा जाता है कि इस धरती पर भगवान नौ बार अवतार न्ले चुके हैं। अपने आस-पास और दूर-दूर तक नजर दौड़ाइए। क्या उनके आगमन से दुनिया में कोई खास परिवर्तन आया है? अगर आप अपनी जिंदगी स्वयंजीना नहीं सोखेंगे, तो भगवान दसवीं बार आएं, तब भी कोई फर्क पड़ने वाला नहीं है। महान लोग दस हजार बार आएं, तब भी कुछ होने वाला नहीं है।
संसार में केंचुए से लेकर भीमकाय हाथी तक, सारे ही जानवर अपनी जरूरत की चीजों को ढूंढ़ने के लिए निजी क्षमता पर निर्भर रहते हैं; वे इस काम में किसी से मदद नहीं मांगते। इन सभी की तुलना में अधिक बुद्धिमान माना जाने वाला मनुष्य अपनी जरूरत की चीजों के लिए भगवान का मोहताज बनकर बैठा हुआ है?
आप हर सांस में यह कहते हैं कि ईश्वर सर्वशक्तिमान हैं। उनकी मर्जी के बिना एक तिनका भी नहीं हिल सकता। फिर ईश्वर पर भरोसा करते हुए क्या आप स्वयं को पूर्ण रूप से उनके हाथों में सौंप देंगे? नहीं न? उनकी बुद्धिमानी पर संदेह करते हुए हर दिन उनके सामने आंखें बंद किए खड़े होकर आप ही तो भगवान को बताते रहते हैं कि उन्हें क्या करना चाहिए और क्या नहीं? आप उनसे यही कहते हैं, ‘बिना मेहनत किए भोजन मिलता रहे, बिना पढ़े परीक्षा में सफलता मिलती रहे और मेरी हर गलती को, हर अपराध को अनदेखा कर दिया जाए। हे ईश्वर, आप इसमें सहायक बने रहें।’ जीवन अचानक पटरी से उतर जाए, तो क्या किया जाए, यही सोचते हुए आपने ईश्वर को एक बीमा की तरह रख छोड़ा है। इसीलिए मंदिर पर मंदिर बनाकर बीमे की किस्त भरते हैं। मेरे लिए ये-ये चीजें ले आओ और फलां-फलां आफतों से बचाया करो, यह निर्देश देते हुए आप ईश्वर को अपने सेवक और अंगरक्षक के रूप में बहाल करना चाहते हैं। यदि केवल जीवन के खतरों के भय ने आपके अंदर ईश्वर संबंधी विश्वास को बढ़ाया है, तो आपके पास न ईश्वर बचेगा, न जीवन ही।

You have no direct experience with God. So, you have accepted what others have said and placed your faith in them. Why do you go to the temple? To experience God? You go to make a wish, “O Lord, give me this, give me that.” Is your faith in God often based on greed and fear?
You have dozens of pictures of gods and goddesses in your home. Despite this, has your fear gone away? You are driven by “bhaav-bhakti.” If God is the embodiment of love, isn’t devotion to Him enough? Why the fear? Those who cannot experience God are the ones who talk most about devotion today. It is said that God has incarnated on this earth nine times. Look around you and beyond. Has His arrival brought any significant change to the world? If you don’t learn to live your life yourself, even if God comes a tenth time, it won’t make a difference. Even if great people come a ten thousand times, nothing will happen.
All animals in the world, from earthworms to giant elephants, rely on their own abilities to find what they need; they don’t ask anyone for help. Why is man, considered more intelligent than all of them, dependent on God for everything he needs?
With every breath you proclaim that God is omnipotent. Not even a blade of grass can move without His will. Then, trusting God, will you surrender yourself completely into His hands? No, right? Doubting His wisdom, you stand before Him every day with your eyes closed, telling Him what He should and should not do. You ask Him, “May I keep getting food without working hard, may I keep passing exams without studying, and may every mistake and every transgression of mine be overlooked.” O God, may you be helpful in this.’ Worried about what to do if life suddenly goes off track, you have kept God as an insurance. That is why you build temple after temple and pay insurance premiums. By instructing God to bring you these things and protect you from such and such calamities, you want to reinstate God as your servant and bodyguard. If only the fear of life’s dangers has increased your faith in God, then you will have neither God nor life.
