गङ्गा
पुराण कहते हैं, कपिल मुनि की दृष्टि पड़ते ही राजा सगर के साठ हजार पुत्र जल कर भष्म हो गए। साठ हजार पुत्र? मतलब इससे अधिक जनबल संसार में किसी के पास सम्भव नहीं। पारिवारिक शक्ति का ऐसा कोई दूसरा उदाहरण है ही नहीं। यह भी कथा है कि उन्होंने ही भारत सागर का निर्माण कराया। तो जो महासमुद्र का निर्माण करा दे, उसके धनबल का भी कोई जोड़ होगा? सम्भव ही नहीं।
तो जो व्यक्ति संसार का सबसे शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति है, सर्वाधिक धनवान व्यक्ति है, वह भी एक ऋषि के तेज का सामना नहीं कर सकता। ऋषि की एक दृष्टि उनका नाश कर सकती है। यह धर्म की शक्ति है, यह तप की शक्ति है। धर्म की एक दृष्टि बलशाली के बल का नाश कर सकती है।
एक और बात पर ध्यान दीजियेगा। सगर ने अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया था, वही घोड़ा ढूंढने निकले उनके पुत्रों ने कपिल मुनि के साथ अभद्रता की और भष्म हुए। राजसूय या अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया जाता था चक्रवर्ती सम्राट कहलाने के लिए। मतलब फलाँ राजा इस यज्ञ को पूर्ण करने के बाद समूची पृथ्वी का सम्राट होगा! अब आप पुराणों में वर्णित हर राजसूय या अश्वमेघ यज्ञ को याद कीजिये, आप देखेंगे कि हर बार यज्ञकर्ता के कुल का अहित हुआ है। हर बार… पृथ्वीपति तो केवल ईश्वर हैं दोस्त! कोई और हो ही नहीं सकता। होने का अहंकार पालोगे, तो जल जाना पड़ेगा।
राजा सगर की समस्या यह कि अकाल मृत्यु मरे पुत्रों की मुक्ति कैसे होगी? ऋषि द्वारा दंडित होने का अर्थ ही है प्रतिष्ठा का चला जाना। यह राजकुल पुनः अपनी प्रतिष्ठा कैसे प्राप्त करे? तो राह उसी ऋषि ने बताई, जिन्होंने दण्ड दिया। दण्डाधिकारी अपराधी का शत्रु नहीं होता। वह अपराध के लिए दंडित करता है, तो मुक्ति का मार्ग भी वही बताता है।
ऋषि ने कहा, गङ्गा को उतारो! स्वर्ग से धरा धाम पर… क्षमा का दान माता से अधिक कोई नहीं दे सकता। फिर गङ्गा तो सबकी माता है, वह सारे अपराध क्षमा कर देंगी। सगर ने पूछा, “माता गङ्गा कैसे आएंगी?” तो ऋषि ने कहा- तप से! स्वयं को अहंकार से मुक्त करो, सांसारिक कुरीतियों से मुक्त करो, राजा होने के लोभ का त्याग करो और फिर पुकारो! माँ तो सुन ही लेगी…
सगर की महानता यह थी कि उन्होंने ऋषि की आज्ञा का पूर्ण रूप से पालन किया। राजा सिंहासन छोड़ कर वन में तप करने लगे… उनकी यात्रा पूरी हुई तो उनके पुत्र तप करने लगे, फिर उनके पुत्र, फिर उनके… कोई राजसी चिन्ह नहीं, कोई राजसी भाव नहीं, कोई सुख नहीं… एक मासूम बालक के जैसी करुण पुकार! माँ! मुक्ति दो मेरे पूर्वजों को… मुक्ति दो हमें… अहा! अपने पुरुखों के प्रति यह समर्पण, यह लगाव, यह छटपटाहट… मॉं कैसे न सुनती भाई?
गङ्गा उतरीं। सगर कुल के लिए, समूची मानवजाति के लिए, समस्त जीवों के लिए… सबकी माता, जगत माता… अब प्रश्न था कि उनका वेग कैसे सम्भले? तो शिव ने जटा खोली। सृष्टि के सबसे महान तपस्वी की जटा… युगों युगों की तपस्या में निर्मित हुई जटा… महादेव की जटा! ऐसा क्या है जो न थम जाय उनमें?
तो गङ्गा थम गयीं। सगर का कल्याण हुआ। उनके जल से भारत का निर्माण हुआ। सबका कल्याण करतीं माता गङ्गा, सबके अपराधों को क्षमा करतीं माता, सबको मुक्ति देतीं माता…

The Puranas say that King Sagar’s sixty thousand sons were reduced to ashes upon the mere sight of Kapil Muni. Sixty thousand sons? No one in the world could possess such a powerful force. There’s no other example of familial power. Legend has it that he created the Bharata Ocean. So, can the wealth of the one who built the great ocean be matched? It’s impossible.
So, even the most powerful person in the world, the wealthiest, cannot withstand the brilliance of a sage. A single glance from a sage can destroy them. This is the power of dharma, this is the power of austerity. A single glance of dharma can destroy even the mightiest.
Pay attention to one more thing. Sagar had performed the Ashwamedha Yagna (sacrifice sacrifice). His sons, who had gone out to find the horse, mistreated Kapil Muni and were reduced to ashes. The Rajasuya or Ashwamedha Yagna was performed to become a Chakravarti emperor. This means that after completing this yajna, such and such king will become the emperor of the entire earth! Now, recall every Rajasuya or Ashvamedha yajna described in the Puranas. You will see that each time, the family of the yajna performer has suffered harm. Each time… only God is the ruler of the earth, my friend! There can be no one else. If you harbor the pride of being one, you will be burned to ashes.
King Sagar’s problem was how would his sons, who died prematurely, attain salvation? Being punished by a sage means losing prestige. How could this royal family regain its prestige? The sage who administered the punishment showed the way. The punisher is not the enemy of the criminal. While he punishes for the crime, he also shows the path to salvation.
The sage said, “Bring the Ganges down from heaven to earth… No one can bestow forgiveness more than a mother.” After all, the Ganges is everyone’s mother; she will forgive all crimes. Sagara asked, “How will Mother Ganga come?” The sage replied, “Through penance! Free yourself from ego, free yourself from worldly vices, renounce the desire to be king, and then call out! Mother will surely hear…
Sagar’s greatness lay in his complete obedience to the sage’s command. The king abdicated his throne and began meditating in the forest… When his journey was complete, his sons began meditating, then their sons, then theirs… No royal insignia, no royal sentiments, no happiness… A pitiful cry like an innocent child’s! Mother! Liberate my ancestors… Liberate us… Ah! This devotion, this attachment, this yearning for our ancestors… How could Mother not hear?
Ganga descended. For the Sagara clan, for all humanity, for all living beings… Mother of all, Mother of the world… Now the question was how to control her speed? So Shiva untied his locks. The matted locks of the greatest ascetic in the universe… matted locks formed through eons of austerity… the matted locks of Mahadev! What is there in them that cannot be stopped?
So the Ganges stopped. Sagar was blessed. India was created from her waters. Mother Ganga brings welfare to all, forgives all transgressions, grants salvation to all…
