राम सुतार की स्मृति
देश के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित और अनुभवी मूर्तिकार राम वंजी सुतार का निधन कला जगत के लिए एक अपूरणीय क्षति है। सौ साल की उम्र में देह त्यागने वाले मूर्तिकार को उनके योगदान के लिए हमेशा याद किया जाएगा। उन्हें विश्व की एक सबसे ऊंची प्रतिमा ‘स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी’ (182 मीटर) बनाने के लिए भारत में ही नहीं, विदेश में भी सम्मानित किया गया। महाराष्ट्र में धुलिया जिले के निवासी राम सुतार बॉम्बे के जे जे स्कूल ऑफ आर्ट से अपने समय में स्वर्ण पदक विजेता थे। उनके – काम की सहजता, निपुणता प्रशंसनीय है। वह ऐसी मूर्तियां बनाते हैं, जो यथार्थ के बहुत निकट होती हैं। उनके लिए मूर्ति शिल्प केवल कला नहीं, बल्कि विज्ञान भी है, इसलिए उनके बनाए शिल्प अपनी संपूर्णता में पूरे भाव के साथ सजीव दिखते हैं। हाल के वर्षों में उन्हें सरदार प्रसिरोवर डैम पर विराजमान सरदार पटेल की विशालकाय प्रतिमा के लिए जाना गया, किंतु उससे पहले लंबे दौर से उन्हें गांधीजी की आवक्ष प्रतिमाओं या ‘बस्ट स्टैच्यू’ के लिए पहचाना जाता था। उनकी बनाई गई ग्रांधी प्रतिमाएं अनेक देशों में स्थापित हैं।
काराम सुतार आज नहीं हैं, लेकिन दुनिया के करीब पांच सौ शहरों में उनके द्वारा निर्मित प्रतिमाएं उनकी याद दिला रही हैं। ऐसे में, भारत ही लहीं, अनेक देशों में लोग उन्हें भुला न पाएंगे। दुनिया के ज्यादातर समकालीन शिल्पकारों ने उनके काम को करीब से देखा और सीखा है।
छोटे आकार के शिल्प या मूर्ति बनाने वाले कलाकार बहुत मिल जाते हैं, लेकिन विशालकाय मूर्तियों को साकार करने की क्षमता राम सुतार को विशिष्ट बनाती है।
उनकी यथार्थवादी शैली मूर्ति शिल्प के पाठ्यक्रम का अभिन्न हिस्सा है। बेशक, उनकी ख्याति के पीछे उनका खुश रहना और लंबा जीवन भी बहुत कारगर रहा। साथ ही, यह एक अच्छी बात है कि अपने पीछे वह अपनी शिल्प कंपनी और समृद्ध विरासत छोड़ गए हैं। उनकी कला अमिट रहेगी। अनेक मूर्तिकार ऐसे हुए हैं, जिन्होंने अपनी कला विद्या को संस्थान का स्वरूप प्रदान नहीं किया, लेकिन राम सुतार इस मामले में एक बेहतरीन मिसाल हैं। उनकी कृतियां और विरासत अतुलनीय हैं। इस सदी या बीती सदी के बड़े शिल्पकारों में उनकी गिनती होती है। गौर करने की बात यह है कि छोटे आकार के शिल्प या मूर्ति बनाने वाले कलाकार तो बहुत मिल जाते हैं, लेकिन विशालकाय मूर्तियों को साकार करने की क्षमता राम सुतार को विशिष्ट बना देती है। आज विश्व में विशालकाय स्मारकीय मूर्तियों का विशेष क्षेत्र विकसित हो गया है। यहां मूर्तियां स्वांतः सुखाय नहीं हैं, यहां किसी देव, व्यक्ति या नेता को देखकर मूर्ति को हुबहू आकार देना पड़ता है। आदमकद मूर्तियों को बनाना अपेक्षाकृत आसान है, मगर बात जहां विशालकाय मूर्तियों की आती है, वहां राम सुतार अकेले नजर आते हैं। विह केवल मूर्ति नहीं बनाते थे, वह वास्तुकार भी थे और उन्हें सिविल इंजीनियरिंग का भी पूरा ज्ञान था। अपनी इन तीनों विधाओं को मिलाकर उन्होंने अपना कला साम्राज्य खड़ा किया। अगर हम 182 मीटर ऊंची सरदार पटेल की विशालकाय प्रतिमा की विवेचना करें, तो पाएंगे कि सरदार की पलकों से लेकर झुर्रियों और माथे के बल तक का अनुपात अद्भुत है। कंधे पर शॉल की सिलवटों से परछाई तक मूर्ति ने इतना विस्तार पाया है कि आप देखते चले जाते हैं। अभी तो अयोध्या में 1251 मीटर ऊंची राम प्रतिमा बननी है। मुंबई में शिवाजी और आंबेडकर की प्रतिमाएं बननी हैं, अभी तो देश में गौरवशाली विशाल प्रतिमाओं का युग शुरू ही हुआ है। बहुत काम बाकी था, मगर अफसोस ! राम सुतार चले गए। अब उन्हें सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि यही होगी कि उनकी बेमिसाल विरासत को पूरे वैभव के साथ आगे बढ़ाया जाए।
The passing of Ram Vanji Sutar, one of the country’s most renowned and experienced sculptors, is an irreparable loss to the art world. The sculptor, who passed away at the age of 100, will always be remembered for his contributions. He was honored both in India and abroad for creating the ‘Statue of Unity’ (182 meters), one of the tallest statues in the world. A resident of Dhule district in Maharashtra, Ram Sutar was a gold medalist from the JJ School of Art in Mumbai. The ease and skill in his work are commendable. He created sculptures that were remarkably lifelike. For him, sculpting was not just an art, but also a science, which is why his creations appear so vibrant and full of life. In recent years, he became known for the colossal statue of Sardar Patel at the Sardar Sarovar Dam, but for a long time before that, he was recognized for his busts of Mahatma Gandhi. His Gandhi statues are installed in many countries.
Ram Sutar is no longer with us, but his sculptures, installed in nearly five hundred cities around the world, serve as a lasting tribute to him. Therefore, he will not be forgotten, not only in India but in many other countries as well. Most contemporary sculptors have closely observed and learned from his work.

His realistic style is an integral part of the sculpture curriculum. Undoubtedly, his cheerful disposition and long life also contributed significantly to his fame. It is also fortunate that he has left behind his sculpting company and a rich legacy. His art will remain indelible. Many sculptors have not formalized their artistic knowledge into an institution, but Ram Sutar is a shining example in this regard. His works and legacy are unparalleled. He is counted among the greatest sculptors of this century and the last. It’s noteworthy that while many artists create small-scale sculptures or figurines, Ram Sutar’s ability to bring colossal statues to life sets him apart. Today, a specialized field of monumental sculptures has developed worldwide. These sculptures are not created for personal satisfaction; they require accurately depicting a deity, person, or leader. Creating life-size statues is relatively easy, but when it comes to colossal sculptures, Ram Sutar stands alone. He wasn’t just a sculptor; he was also an architect and possessed a thorough understanding of civil engineering. He combined these three disciplines to build his artistic empire. If we examine the 182-meter-tall statue of Sardar Patel, we find that the proportions, from Sardar’s eyelids and wrinkles to the lines on his forehead, are astonishing. From the folds of the shawl on his shoulder to the shadows, the statue is so detailed that you can’t help but be captivated. A 1251-meter-tall statue of Ram is yet to be built in Ayodhya. Statues of Shivaji and Ambedkar are planned for Mumbai. The era of glorious monumental statues in India has only just begun. There was so much work left to be done, but alas! Ram Sutar is no more. The truest tribute to him would be to carry forward his unparalleled legacy with all its grandeur.
