4 अप्रैल 1975 को बिल गेट्स और पॉल एलन ने माइक्रोसॉफ्ट की स्थापना की। इसने कंप्यूटर सॉफ्टवेयर, ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम और गेमिंग तक पकड़ बनाई और सबसे बड़ी कंपनी बन गई।
इसका शुरुआती नाम ‘Micro-Soft’ था, जो माइक्रोप्रोसेसर और सॉफ्टवेयर शब्दों से बना था।
कंपनी को ‘अल्टेयर 8800’ कंप्यूटर के लिए सॉफ्टवेयर बनाने के लिए बनाया गया था।

1985 में माइक्रोसॉफ्ट ने विडोज लॉन्च किया, जिसमें पहली बार ग्राफिक और मेनू बटन दिए गए।
1986 में कंपनी पब्लिक हुई और इसके एक शेयर की कीमत मात्र 21 डॉलर थी।
1987 में कंपनी की सफलता के कारण 31 साल के बिल गेट्स दुनिया के सबसे कम उम्र के अरबपति बने।
1995 में विंडोज 95 लॉन्च हुआ, जिसमें पहली बार स्टार्ट मेन्यू दिया गया था।
1995 में ही कंपनी ने अपना पहला वेब ब्राउजर इंटरनेट ब्राउजर पेश किया था।
