रुद्र का अर्थ सिर्फ रौद्र नहीं
रुद्र को क्यों गहराई से समझने की जरूरत है? रुद्र नाम लेते ही मन में एक विराट, करुणामय सत्ता की छवि उभरती है। भारतीय दर्शन में रुद्र को सृष्टि का आदि जनक कहा गया है। आपके मन में यह सहज सवाल उठ सकता है कि यदि समस्त जीव-जगत का एक ही परमपिता है, तो फिर मानव समाज में ऊंच-नीच, कुल-गोत्र और भेदभाव की दीवारें क्यों? जब मूल स्रोत एक है, तो उसकी संतानों में विभाजन का आधार क्या हो सकता है? इस दृष्टि से देखा जाए, तो पूरी मानवता एक ही परिवार है। जो लोग समाज में भेद उत्पन्न करते हैं, वे वस्तुतः उस एकत्व की भावना से दूर हैं।
रुद्र का अर्थ है- अनंत सत्ता। इसका शाब्दिक अर्थ ‘रुलाने वाला’ अवश्य है, किंतु यह अधूरा है। परमपुरुष केवल रुलाते नहीं, हंसाते भी हैं। जीवन की चरम पीड़ा में भी आंसू आते हैं और परम आनंद में भी। अंतर केवल इतना है कि शोक के अश्रु आंखों के मध्य भाग से गिरते हैं और आनंद के कोनों से। जैसे, मां अपनी पुत्री के विदा होने पर भी रोती है और उसके लौटने पर भी-एक विछोह की पीड़ा से, दूसरी बार सुख से। यही जीवन का द्वंद्व है और इसी द्वंद्व के बीच रुद्र की लीला प्रवाहित होती है।
यह संसार आपेक्षिक है- क्षणभंगुर, परिवर्तनशील। इसकी सत्ता सापेक्ष है, जबकि परमपुरुष इस सापेक्षता से परे हैं। वह परम् सत्ता हैं। जब मानव मन उस एक की ओर उन्मुख होता है, तब उसे बुद्धि का प्रकाश मिलता है। अग्रबुद्धि जागृत होते ही वह परमसत्ता का बोध कर लेता है। तब साधक ठहरता नहीं, वह सत्यकी ओर दौड़ पड़ता है। इसी भाव से प्रार्थना उठती है- ‘हे प्रभु, हमें अंधकार से प्रकाश की ओर ले चलो।’ यहां अंधकार अविद्या है, अज्ञान है, जो सत्य के प्रकाश को ढक देता है।
रुद्र को गुरु भी कहा गया है, पिता भी और शिक्षक भी। वे सब मिलकर एक ही हैं। इसी सत्य को प्रतीकात्मक रूप में ‘पंचमुखी रुद्र’ के जरिये समझाया गया है। रुद्र एक ही हैं, किंतु व्यवस्था के लिए उनके पांच मुख माने गए हैं-पांच दायित्व, पांच भूमिकाएं।
पहला है, दक्षिणेश्वर मुख। यह स्नेहिल पिता का है। इससे करुणा बरसती है। दूसरा है- बामदेव। यह अनुशासन का प्रतीक है। जब संतति मर्यादा भंग करती है, तो इससे डांट निकलती है, दंड मिलता है। तीसरा है ईशान मुख। यह समझाता है। चौथा है कालाग्नि मुख-कठोर फटकार का प्रतीक। यह डांटता, झकझोरता है, पर दंड नहीं देता। पांचवां मुख है-कल्याणसुंदरम्। यही रुद्र का परम स्वभाव है- अप्रतिम सौंदर्य, गंभीर करुणा से भरा हुआ। जैसे माता-पिता अपने शिशु को देखते हैं, जिसमें केवल स्नेह होता है। यही रुद्र की अंतःप्रकृति है। दक्षिण और वाम मुख व्यवस्था के लिए हैं, मध्य का यह करुणामय स्वरूप ही उनका वास्तविक हृदय है।
मां अपनी पुत्री के विदा होने पर भी रोती है और उसके लौटने पर भी- एक बार बिछोह की पीड़ा से, दूसरी बार सुख से। यही जीवन का द्वंद्व है और इसी द्वंद्व के बीच रुद्र की लीला प्रवाहित होती है।

Why is it necessary to understand Rudra deeply? The very mention of Rudra evokes the image of a vast, compassionate being. In Indian philosophy, Rudra is described as the original creator of the universe. A natural question may arise: if all living things have one Supreme Father, then why are there walls of discrimination, caste, lineage, and other distinctions within human society? When the original source is one, what could be the basis for division among its children? Seen from this perspective, all of humanity is one family. Those who create divisions in society are, in fact, far from that sense of unity.
Rudra means infinite being. Its literal meaning is “one who makes us cry,” but this is incomplete. The Supreme Being not only makes us cry, but also makes us laugh. Tears flow in life’s extreme pain and in supreme joy. The only difference is that tears of grief fall from the center of the eyes, while those of joy fall from the corners. For example, a mother cries when her daughter departs and when she returns—once from the pain of separation, once from joy. This is the duality of life, and within this duality, Rudra’s play flows.
This world is relative—ephemeral, changeable. Its existence is relative, whereas the Supreme Being transcends this relativity. He is the Supreme Being. When the human mind turns toward that One, it receives the light of wisdom. As soon as the intellect awakens, it realizes the Supreme Being. Then the seeker does not stop, but rushes toward the truth. From this feeling arises the prayer: “O Lord, lead us from darkness to light.” Here, darkness is ignorance, ignorance, which obscures the light of truth.
Rudra is also called the Guru, the Father, and the Teacher. They are one and the same. This truth is symbolically explained through the symbolism of “Panchmukhi Rudra.” Rudra is one, but for the sake of order, he has five faces—five responsibilities, five roles.
The first is the Dakshineshwar face. It is that of a loving father. It showers compassion. The second is Vamdev. It symbolizes discipline. When children transgress, it scolds and punishes. The third is the Ishan face. It explains. The fourth is the Kalagni face—a symbol of harsh rebuke. It scolds and reprimands, but does not punish. The fifth is Kalyanasundaram. This is Rudra’s ultimate nature—unparalleled beauty, filled with profound compassion. Just as a parent looks at their child, filled with only affection. This is Rudra’s inner nature. The right and left faces are for order; this compassionate middle form is his true heart.
A mother cries when her daughter leaves and when she returns—once with the pain of separation, another time with joy. This is the duality of life, and it is in this duality that the divine play of Rudra flows.
