सेवा
एक आदमी ने एक विद्यालय शुरू किया। एक दिन विद्यालय में वाद विवाद प्रतियोगिता का आयोजन किया गया, जिसका विषय था- जीव दया और प्राणी मात्र की सेवा।
तय समय पर विद्यालय के कॉन्फ्रेंस हॉल में प्रतियोगिता आरंभ हुई। किसी छात्र ने सेवा के लिए संसाधनों की महत्ता पर दिया और कहा कि हम दूसरों की तभी सेवा कर सकते हैं, जब हमारे पास उसके लिए पर्याप्त संसाधन हों। वहीं कुछ छात्रों का यह भी कहना था कि सेवा के लिए संसाधन नहीं, भावनाओं का होना जरूरी है।
इस तरह तमाम प्रतिभागियों ने सेवा के विषय में शानदार भाषण दिए। आखिर में जब पुरस्कार देने का समय आया, तो उस आदमी ने एक ऐसे विद्यार्थी को चुना, जो मंच पर बोलने के लिए ही नहीं आया था। यह देखकर सामने बैठे लोगों में रोष के स्वर उठने लगे। आदमी ने सबको शांत कराया और कहा, ‘आपको शिकायत है कि मैंने ऐसे विद्यार्थी को क्यों चुना, जो प्रतियोगिता में शामिल ही नहीं हुआ था ? दरअसल, मैं जानना चाहता था कि हमारे छात्रों में कौन-सा विद्यार्थी सेवाभाव को सबसे बेहतर ढंग से समझता है। प्रतियोगिता स्थल के द्वार पर एक घायल बिल्ली कराह रही थी। आप सब उसी द्वार से अंदर आए, परंतु किसी ने भी उस बिल्ली की ओर आंख उठाकर नहीं देखा। यह अकेला प्रतिभागी था, जिसने वहां रुक कर उसका उपचार किया और उसे सुरक्षित स्थान पर छोड़ आया।’
व्यक्ति ने आगे कहा- सेवा या सहायता वाद-विवाद का विषय नहीं है, यह जीवन जीने की कला है। जो अपने आचरण से शिक्षा देने का साहस न रखता हो, उसके वक्तव्य कितने भी प्रभावी क्यों न हों, वह पुरस्कार पाने के योग्य नहीं हैं।
A man started a school. One day, a debate competition was organized at the school, the topic of which was “Compassion for Living Beings and Service to All Creatures.”
The competition began at the appointed time in the school’s conference hall. One student spoke about the importance of resources for service, saying that we can only serve others if we have sufficient resources. However, some students argued that service requires not resources, but compassion.
In this way, all the participants gave excellent speeches on the topic of service. Finally, when it was time to award the prizes, the man chose a student who hadn’t even come to the stage to speak. Seeing this, the people sitting in the audience began to express their anger. The man calmed everyone down and said, “You are complaining that I chose a student who didn’t even participate in the competition? Actually, I wanted to know which of our students best understood the spirit of service. A wounded cat was whimpering at the entrance to the competition hall. You all entered through that same door, but no one even glanced at the cat. This was the only participant who stopped there, treated its wounds, and took it to a safe place.”
The man continued, “Service or help is not a subject for debate; it is an art of living. Those who do not have the courage to teach through their actions, no matter how effective their speeches may be, are not worthy of receiving an award.”
