शिव ने मस्तक पर धारण किया चंद्रमा
चंद्रमा का जन्म फाल्गुन मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी तिथि को हुआ था। शिव-पार्वती के विवाह की इस तिथि को महाशिवरात्रि के रूप में मनाया जाता है। शिव ने चंद्रमा को इसी दिन अपने मस्तक पर धारण किया था।
ऋग्वेद के ‘पुरुष सूक्त’ खंड में वर्णन है कि चंद्रमा का जन्म मन से और सूर्य का जन्म आदिम सत्ता की आंखों से हुआ था। ‘चंद्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत’, इसलिए चंद्रमा को ‘मन’ या मन के अधिष्ठाता देवता के रूप में पूजा जाता है। मन जिसकी कोई थाह नहीं है। मन की जीवन में निर्णायक भूमिका होती है, क्योंकि कहा गया है- ‘मन के हारे हार है, मन के जीते जीत।’ नव ग्रहों में रानी और संबंधों में मां के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित, कोमल भावनाओं का प्रतीक चंद्रमा राजसी सुख भी देता है।
मत्स्य एवं अग्नि पुराण में ऐसा वर्णन है कि जब ब्रह्माजी सृष्टि की रचना कर रहे थे, तो उन्होंने संकल्प से अपने दस मानस पुत्रों की उत्पत्ति की। इनमें अत्रि, अंगिरा, पुलस्त्य, मरीचि, पुलह, क्रतु, भृगु, वसिष्ठ, दक्ष और नारद थे। इनमें अत्रि ऋषि का विवाह प्रजापति कर्दम और देवहूति की कन्या अनसूया से हुआ। अनसूया से दुर्वासा, दत्तात्रेय और सोम तीन पुत्र हुए। सोम ही चंद्र के नाम से जाने जाते हैं। वैदिक काल में सोम का स्थान प्रमुख देवताओं में था। सूर्य, अग्नि और इंद्र आदि देवताओं की तरह सोम के भी स्तुति मंत्र प्रचलित हैं।
चंद्रमा के जन्म की एक अन्य कथा भी है। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार जब देवता और दानवों ने मिलकर समुद्र मंथन किया था, तो उसमें चौदह रत्न निकले। चंद्रमा इन्हीं में से एक थे। यद्यपि ग्रह रूप में चंद्रमा की उपस्थिति समुद्र मंथन से पहले भी थी। समुद्र से निकले चौदह रत्नों में से दो को शिव ने ग्रहण किया। एक, कालकूट विष और दूसरा चंद्रमा। ऐसी मान्यता है कि
जब विष की ज्वाला से शिव का मस्तिष्क जलने लगा, तो उसे शीतलता प्रदान करने के लिए उन्होंने मस्तक पर चंद्रमा को धारण किया।
इन कथाओं के बीच चंद्रमा के जन्म का पद्म पुराण में भी जिक्र आता है। ब्रह्माजी ने अपने मानस पुत्र अत्रि को सृष्टि के विस्तार की आज्ञा दी। ऋषि अत्रि ने ‘अनुत्तर’ नाम का तप करना आरंभ कर दिया। तप करते हुए ऋषि के नेत्रों से जल के कुछ कण टपक गए। दिव्य रोशनी से जगमगाते हुए उन कणों को, पुत्र की कामना से दिशाओं ने स्त्री रूप में धारण कर लिया, लेकिन वे उस तेज को संभाल नहीं पाईं और उसे त्याग दिया। ब्रह्माजी ने उस त्यागे हुए गर्भ को पुरुष रूप दिया। यही पुरुष रूप चंद्रमा है। चंद्रमा का विवाह दक्ष प्रजापति की सत्ताइस नक्षत्र कन्याओं से हुआ। पत्नी रोहिणी के प्रति विशेष लगाव के कारण दक्ष ने उन्हें क्षय रोग का शाप दिया था, जिसे भगवान शिव ने आंशिक रूप से ठीक किया। इसी कारण चंद्रमा घटते और बढ़ते हैं।

The Moon was born on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Phalguna. This date, the wedding of Shiva and Parvati, is celebrated as Mahashivratri. Shiva wore the Moon on his head on this day.
The Purusha Sukta section of the Rig Veda describes the Moon as born from the mind, and the Sun as born from the eyes of the primordial being. “Chandrama Manso Jatashakshah Suryao Ajayat,” (The moon is the mind, the sun is the eye of the primordial being). Therefore, the Moon is worshipped as the presiding deity of the mind, the mind, which has no bounds. The mind plays a decisive role in life, as it is said, “If the mind loses, it is defeat; if the mind wins, it is victory.” Regarded as the queen of the nine planets and a mother in relationships, the Moon, symbolizing tender emotions, also bestows royal comforts.
The Matsya and Agni Puranas describe that when Brahma was creating the universe, he created his ten Manas sons through his will. These included Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Marichi, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrigu, Vasishtha, Daksha, and Narada. Sage Atri married Anasuya, the daughter of Prajapati Kardama and Devahuti. Anasuya bore three sons: Durvasa, Dattatreya, and Soma. Soma is also known as the Moon. In the Vedic period, Soma was among the most prominent deities. Like the Sun, Fire, and Indra, chants praising Soma are also popular.
There is another story about the Moon’s birth. According to mythology, when the gods and demons churned the ocean together, fourteen gems emerged. The Moon was one of these gems. Although the Moon existed as a planet even before the churning of the ocean, Shiva accepted two of the fourteen gems: the poison Kalakuta, and the moon. It is believed that when Shiva’s brain began to burn from the flames of the poison, he wore the moon on his head to cool it.
Among these stories, the birth of the Moon is also mentioned in the Padma Purana. Brahma commanded his mental son, Atri, to expand the universe. Sage Atri began a penance called “Anuttar.” While meditating, a few drops of water fell from the sage’s eyes. These drops, glowing with divine light, were taken by the directions in the form of women, yearning for a son. However, unable to handle the radiance, they abandoned it. Brahma gave the abandoned fetus a male form. This male form is the Moon. The Moon was married to the twenty-seven Nakshatra daughters of Daksha Prajapati. Due to his special affection for his wife Rohini, Daksha cursed him with tuberculosis, which Lord Shiva partially cured. This is why the Moon waxes and wanes.
