राम से इस दिन मिले हनुमान
बड़ा मंगल (ज्येष्ठ मास)
ज्येष्ठ मास में पड़ने वाले मंगलवार को ‘बड़ा’ मंगल या ‘बुढ़वा’ मंगल कहा जाता है। इसके इस नाम के पीछे दो पौराणिक कथाओं का जिक्र मिलता है। एक कथा के अनुसार ज्येष्ठ मास के मंगलवार को ही भगवान राम वन में सीता को खोजते हुए पहली बार हनुमान से मिले थे। इस कारण इस महीने के सभी मंगलवार को ‘बड़ा’ मंगल के नाम से जाना जाता है। वहीं दूसरी कथा के अनुसार महाभारत काल में ज्येष्ठ मास के मंगलवार को हनुमान जी ने बूढ़े वानर का रूप धारण कर भीम के बल के अभिमान को नष्ट किया था। कालांतर में इसे ‘बुढ़वा’ मंगल भी कहा जाने लगा। इस दिन हनुमान के वृद्ध स्वरूप की पूजा की जाती है। मान्यता है कि इस दिन पवन पुत्र को चोला चढ़ाने से हर प्रकार की बाधा दूर होती है। यह पर्व विशेष रूप से उत्तर भारत और खासकर उत्तर प्रदेश के पूर्वांचल और मध्य क्षेत्रों में धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है।
एक अन्य कहानी के अनुसार एक बार लखनऊ के नवाब वाजिद अली शाह के पुत्र की तबीयत बहुत खराब हो गई। योग्य चिकित्सकों को दिखाने और हर प्रकार के उपाय करने के बाद भी वाजिद अली के पुत्र, का रोग ठीक नहीं हुआ, तब किसी ने उन्हें बताया कि अलीगंज में स्थित हनुमान मंदिर में प्रार्थना करने से उनके पुत्र का रोग ठीक हो जाएगा। वाजिद अली शाह ने अपने पुत्र के लिए वहां जाकर प्रार्थना की। इससे उनका पुत्र ठीक हो गया। इसके बाद नवाब और उनकी बेगम ने उस मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार करवाया, जो ज्येष्ठ माह में पूर्ण हुआ। तभी से लखनऊ में बड़ा मंगल के दिन भंडारे और गुड़ के प्रसाद वितरण की परंपरा शुरू हो गई।
सूर्य के वृष राशि में आने पर ज्येष्ठ मास का आगमन होता है। ज्येष्ठ का अर्थ है- बड़ा। इस मास में दिन बड़े होते हैं। ज्येष्ठ मास का स्वामी मंगल क अग्निकारक है, इसलिए इस मास में भीषण गर्मी इन पड़ती है। इस माह में जल का विशेष महत्व है। चाहे ऐ वह जल-बचाव के रूप में हो या जल-दान के रूप में। इस माह में जल से जुड़े दो विशेष पर्व आते हैं-गंगा दशहरा और निर्जला एकादशी। इन पर्वो पर पानी से भरा घड़ा, पंखा, छाता, जूते-चप्पल आदि का दान करना विशेष पुण्यदायी माना जाता है।
ज्येष्ठ मास में ही ‘नौतपा’ भी पड़ता है। नौ दिन की यह अवधि आमतौर पर मई के अंत और जून की शुरुआत में होती है, जब सूर्य रोहिणी नक्षत्र में प्रवेश करता है। इससे धरती पर भीषण गर्मी पड़ती है। इस अवधि में सूर्य पृथ्वी के सबसे करीब होता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि नौतपा में धरती जितनी तपती है, मानसून में वर्षा उतनी ही अच्छी होती है। सूर्य के मृगशिरा नक्षत्र में प्रवेश करने के साथ नौतपा समाप्त हो जाता है।
इस मास में विष्णु की पूजा के साथ ही गंगा, सूर्य, वरुण और हनुमान की पूजा का भी विशेष महत्व है। एक मान्यता के अनुसार इस महीने में परिवार के बड़े पुत्र या पुत्री का विवाह नहीं करना चाहिए।
Bada Mangal (The Month of Jyeshtha)
The Tuesdays falling within the month of Jyeshtha are referred to as ‘Bada Mangal’ (Great Tuesday) or ‘Budhwa Mangal’ (Old Tuesday). Two mythological legends are cited as the basis for this name. According to one legend, it was specifically on a Tuesday during the month of Jyeshtha that Lord Ram, while searching for Sita in the forest, encountered Hanuman for the very first time. Consequently, all Tuesdays occurring within this month came to be known as ‘Bada Mangal.’ Conversely, according to a second legend, during the era of the Mahabharata, on a Tuesday in the month of Jyeshtha, Lord Hanuman assumed the guise of an elderly monkey (Vanara) to humble Bhima and dispel his arrogance regarding his physical strength. Over time, this occasion also came to be referred to as ‘Budhwa Mangal.’ On this day, the elderly form of Hanuman is worshipped. It is believed that offering a Chola (sacred vestment) to the Son of the Wind (Pawan Putra) on this day helps remove all manner of obstacles. This festival is celebrated with great fervor, particularly across North India—and most notably in the Purvanchal and Central regions of Uttar Pradesh.
According to yet another story, the son of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Lucknow once fell gravely ill. Despite consulting highly skilled physicians and exhausting every possible remedy, Wajid Ali’s son showed no signs of recovery. Eventually, someone suggested to him that offering prayers at the Hanuman temple located in Aliganj would cure his son’s ailment. Wajid Ali Shah visited the temple and prayed earnestly for his son’s recovery. Miraculously, his son was cured. Following this event, the Nawab and his Begum undertook the renovation of the temple—a project that was completed during the month of Jyeshtha. Since that time, the tradition of organizing Bhandaras (community feasts) and distributing Prasad (sacred food offerings), particularly Gur (jaggery), on the day of Bada Mangal has flourished in Lucknow.
The month of Jyeshtha commences when the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Taurus. The word Jyeshtha itself signifies “great” or “elder.” During this month, the days are notably longer. The ruling deity of Jyeshtha is Mars (Mangal), which is associated with the element of fire; consequently, this month is characterized by scorching heat. Water holds immense significance during this month—whether in the context of water conservation or through the act of Jal-daan (donating water). Two distinct festivals associated with water fall within this month: Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi. On these festivals, donating items such as a water-filled earthen pot, a hand fan, an umbrella, and footwear is considered to be especially meritorious.
The period known as ‘Nautapa’ also falls during the month of Jyeshtha. This nine-day duration typically occurs between late May and early June, when the Sun enters the Rohini Nakshatra (constellation). This results in intense heat across the earth. During this period, the Sun is at its closest proximity to the Earth. It is believed that the more intensely the earth heats up during Nautapa, the better the rainfall will be during the monsoon season. Nautapa concludes when the Sun enters the Mrigashira Nakshatra.
In addition to the worship of Lord Vishnu, the worship of Goddess Ganga, the Sun God, Lord Varuna, and Lord Hanuman holds special significance during this month. According to one belief, the marriage of the eldest son or daughter of a family should not be solemnized during this month.
