आजाद भारत की पहली जनगणना 1951 में हुई थी
आजाद भारत की पहली आधिकारिक जनगणना 9 फरवरी 1951 से शुरू हुई थी। उसके बाद हर 10 साल में इसे नियमित रूप से किया जाता रहा है। जनगणना से न केवल जनसंख्या का पता चलता है, बल्कि नीति बनाने, योजनाएं बनाने और संसाधनों के उचित बंटवारे में मदद मिलती है।
यह गिनती 28 फरवरी 1951 तक चली थी, उस समय देश की जनसंख्या लगभग 36 करोड़ थी
1872 से शुरू हुई भारत की जनगणना नौवीं थी और देश आजाद होने के बाद पहली जनगणना भी थी
1881 के बाद से हर 10 साल में जनगणना होने लगी, 1941 में आजादी से पहले आखिरी जनगणना हुई थी
इस दौरान लोगों के नाम, उनकी उम्र, धर्म, जाति और आजीविका जैसे कुछ जरूरी सवाल पूछे गए थे
उस समय जनगणना में जम्मू-कश्मीर को छोड़ दिया गया था, वहां का डाटा पुराने आंकड़ों से लिया गया
1951 में भारत के जनगणना आयुक्त आर. ए. गोपालस्वामी थे, वह 1949 से 1953 तक पद पर रहे
उस समय 36.1 करोड़ की आबादी में से केवल 18 फीसदी से कुछ अधिक लोग पढ़-लिख सकते थे
1951 की जनगणना के बाद भारत का पहला राष्ट्रीय नागरिक रजिस्टर (एनआरसी) तैयार हुआ था
2011 तक भारत में 15 जनगणनाएं हो चुकी हैं, सभी जनगणनाएं भारत जनगणना अधिनियम 1948 के तहत होती हैं

At that time, only a little over 18% of the population of 361 million could read and write.
India’s first National Register of Citizens (NRC) was prepared after the 1951 census.
As of 2011, 15 censuses have been conducted in India, all under the Indian Census Act 1948.
