धर्म के प्रथम वैज्ञानिक
गौतम बुद्ध ऐसे हैं, जैसे हिमाच्छादित हिमालय। पर्वत तो और भी हैं, हिमाच्छादित पर्वत भी और हैं, पर हिमालय अतुलनीय है। उसकी कोई उपमा नहीं है। हिमालय बस हिमालय जैसा है। गौतम बुद्ध बस गौतम बुद्ध जैसे हैं। मनुष्य जाति के इतिहास में वैसा महिमापूर्ण नाम दूसरा नहीं। बुद्ध ने जितने हृदयों की वीणा को बजाया है, उतना किसी और ने नहीं।
गौतम बुद्ध की वाणी अनूठी है। विशेषकर उनके लिए, जो सोच-विचार, चिंतन-मनन, विमर्श के आदी हैं। हृदय से भरे हुए लोग सुगमता से परमात्मा की तरफ चले जाते हैं। लेकिन हृदय से भरे हुए लोग कहां हैं? और हृदय से भरने का कोई उपाय भी तो नहीं है। बुद्ध ने उनको चेताया, जिनको चेताना सर्वाधिक कठिन है। विचार से भरे लोग, बुद्धिवादी, चिंतन-मननशील। प्रेम और भाव से भरे लोग परमात्मा की तरफ सरलता से झुक जाते हैं, उन्हें झुकाना नहीं पड़ता। उनसे कोई न भी कहे, तब भी वे पहुंच जाते हैं, उन्हें पहुंचाना नहीं पड़ता। लेकिन वे तो बहुत थोड़े हैं और उनकी संख्या रोज थोड़ी होती गई है। उंगलियों पर गिने जा सकें, ऐसे लोग हैं। मनुष्य का विकास मस्तिष्क की तरफ हुआ है। मनुष्य मस्तिष्क सें भरा है। इसलिए जहां सब हार जाएं, वहां भी बुद्ध नहीं हारते; वहां भी वह प्राणों के अंतरतम में पहुंच जाते हैं।
बुद्ध धर्म के पहले वैज्ञानिक हैं। उनके साथ श्रद्धा व आस्था की जरूरत नहीं नहीं है। उनके साथ तो समझ पर्याप्त है। अगर तुम समझने को राजी हो, तो तुम बुद्ध की नौका में सवार हो जाओगे। श्रद्धा भी आएगी, तो समझ की छाया होगी, लेकिन समझ के पहले श्रद्धा की मांग बुद्धकी नहीं है। बुद्ध यह नहीं कहते कि जो मैं कहता हूं, उस पर भरोसा कर लो। वह कहते हैं, सोचो, विचारो, विश्लेषण करो, खोजो, पाओ अपने अनुभवसे, तब भरोसा करना। दुनिया के सारे धर्मों ने भरोसे को पहले रखा है, सिर्फ बुद्ध को छोड़कर। दुनिया के सारे धर्मों में श्रद्धा प्राथमिक है, फिर कदम उठेगा। बुद्ध ने कहा, अनुभव प्राथमिक है, श्रद्धा आनुषंगिक है। अनुभव होगा, तो श्रद्धा होगी। अनुभव होगा, तो आस्था होगी। इसीलिए बुद्ध कहते हैं, आस्था की कोई जरूरत नहीं है; अनुभव के साथ अपने से आ जाएगी, तुम्हें लानी नहीं है। तुम्हारी लाई हुई आस्था का मूल्य भी क्या हो सकता है? उसके पीछे छिपे होंगे तुम्हारे संदेह। तुम आरोपित भी कर लोगे विश्वासको, तो उसके पीछे अविश्वास खड़ा होगा। तुम कितनी ही दृढ़ता से भरोसा करना चाहो, तुम्हारी दृढ़ता कंपती रहेगी और तुम जानते रहोगे कि जो जो तुम्हारे अनुभव में नहीं उतरा है, उसे तुम चाहो भी, तब भी कैसे मान सकते हो ? तुम्हारे मोक्ष की धारणा मात्र शाब्दिक होगी, जब तक मुक्ति का थोड़ा स्वाद तुम्हें न लगा हो। बुद्ध के अंतिम वचन हैं: अप्प दीपो भव। अपने दीये खुद बनो।
दुनिया के सारे धर्मों ने भरोसे को पहले रखा है, सिर्फ बुद्ध को छोड़कर। दुनिया के सारे धर्मों में श्रद्धा प्राथमिक है, फिर कदम उठेगा। बुद्ध ने कहा, अनुभव प्राथमिक है, श्रद्धा आनुषंगिक है।
Gautam Buddha is like the snow-capped Himalayas. There are other mountains, and there are other snow-capped mountains, but the Himalayas are incomparable. There is no comparison to them. The Himalayas are simply like the Himalayas. Gautam Buddha is simply like Gautam Buddha. There is no other name as glorious in the history of mankind. No one has played the harp of hearts as much as Buddha.
Gautam Buddha’s words are unique. Especially for those who are accustomed to thinking, contemplating, and discussing. People filled with hearts easily move towards God. But where are those filled with hearts? And there is no way to fill the heart. Buddha warned those who are most difficult to warn: people filled with thought, rationalists, contemplatives. People filled with love and emotion easily incline towards God; they do not need to be coaxed. Even if no one tells them, they still reach there; they do not need to be led. But they are very few, and their number is decreasing daily. Such people can be counted on fingers. Humanity has evolved towards the brain. Humanity is full of brains. Therefore, even where everyone else fails, Buddha does not fail; even there he reaches the innermost depths of the soul.
Buddha is the first scientist of religion. With him, faith and belief are not required. With him, understanding is sufficient. If you are willing to understand, you will board Buddha’s boat. Even if faith comes, there will be a shadow of understanding, but Buddha does not demand faith before understanding. Buddha does not say that you should trust what he says. He says, think, contemplate, analyze, search, find through your own experience, then trust. All the religions of the world have placed trust first, except Buddha. In all the religions of the world, faith is primary, and then the next step will be taken. Buddha said, experience is primary, faith is secondary. If there is experience, there will be faith. If there is experience, there will be faith. That’s why Buddha says there’s no need for faith; it will come naturally with experience; you don’t have to bring it. What value can your acquired faith have? Hidden behind it will be your doubts. Even if you impose faith, disbelief will arise. No matter how strongly you want to believe, your steadfastness will waver, and you will know that how can you believe what hasn’t been experienced? Your notion of salvation will remain merely verbal until you have tasted a little of liberation. Buddha’s final words are: “Aap Deepo Bhava.” Be your own lamp.
All religions of the world, except Buddha’s, have placed faith first. In all religions of the world, faith is primary, and then the next step. Buddha said, “Experience is primary, faith is secondary.”
