भारतवर्ष की साधारण जनता अत्यन्त श्रद्धालु है। आधुनिक विज्ञान के प्रसार के बावजूद दैवी चमत्कारों पर उसकी श्रद्धा विचलित नहीं हुई है। लोगों में जहां कहीं किसी असाधारण चमत्कार की घटना का वृत्तान्त सुना कि तुरन्त उसपर बाल-सहज भावना से विश्वास कर लेते हैं। आम लोगों में भेड़ चाल की बीमारी भी खूब प्रचलित है।… उड़ीसा की ताजा घटना ने साधारण जनता के श्रद्धालु स्वभाव का अच्छा परिचय दे दिया है। कुछ समय से यह समाचार दूर-दूर तक फैला हुआ है कि उड़ीसा के रणतलाई नामक गांव में एक चरवाहे का 12 वर्षीय लड़का ऐसी औषधि वितरण कर रहा है, जिससे हर किस्म की – कठिन से कठिन बीमारी दूर हो जाती है। यह भी कहा जा रहा था कि यह औषधि चरवाहे के लड़के को एक साधु से मिली है और साधु के आदेशानुसार बिना किसी मूल्य के वितरित किया जा रहा है। पश्चिमी बंगाल, उत्तर प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश, बिहार और मद्रास तक से हजारों की संख्या में लोग इस चमत्कारी दवा को प्राप्त करने के लिए रणतलाई पहुंचने लगे। रणतलाई का छोटा-सा गांव दूर-दूर के यात्रियों से ठसा-ठस भर गया और इस समय कटक से रणतलाई के बीच के प्रदेश में इस निमित्त आये हुए 60 हजार यात्री घिरे पड़े हैं।…

उसे उड़ीसा की सरकार के लिए जब इस भीड़भाड़ के लिए व्यवस्था करना कठिन हो गया, तो उसने एक विज्ञप्ति प्रकाशित करके लोगों से तबतक प्रतीक्षा करने को कहा, जबतक चमत्कारी औषधि की प्रभावशीलता के बारे में वह वैज्ञानिक अनुसंधान नहीं कर लेती। किन्तु रणतलाई के यात्रियों पर उड़ीसा सरकार की इस विज्ञप्ति का कोई असर नहीं पड़ा। उनका तांता बराबर बंधा रहा। ऐसे किस्से फैलने लगे कि अमुक कुष्ठ रोगी चंगा हो गया, तो अमुक अन्धे को दिखाई देने लगा।… अब उड़ीसा सरकार ने औषधि के लिए चमत्कारी गुणों को बिल्कुल अविश्वसनीय ठहराया है।… बात यहीं तक समाप्त हो जाती, तो गनीमत थी। किन्तु रणतलाई और उसके आस-पास के क्षेत्र में हैजे का भयंकर प्रकोप प्रारंभ हो गया है और एक अनुमान के अनुसार पांच सौ से अधिक व्यक्ति मौत के घाट उतर चुके हैं। जगह-जगह मृत यात्रियों के शव पड़े हैं।… यह स्थिति उन यात्रियों के लिए गंभीर चेतावनी है, जो… सरकार की सम्मति के विरुद्ध अब भी रणतलाई जाने की सोच रहे हैं।
