अणु बम के प्रयोग की धमकी

अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति श्री टूमन ने एक पत्र-प्रतिनिधि के प्रश्न के उत्तर में कहा है कि अमरीका कोरिया में अणु बम गिराने के सवाल पर सक्रिय रूप से विचार कर रहा है। कोरिया में संयुक्त राष्ट्रीय सेनाओं को जिस विषम स्थिति का सामना करना पड़ रहा है, उसको देखते हुए अमरीकी शासकों को इस ‘भयंकर संहारक अस्त्र का उपयोग कर डालने का सहज प्रलोभन हो सकता है। किन्तु अणु बम के प्रयोग का विचार असाधारण महत्व रखता है और इसके कार्यान्वित होने की सम्भावना पर दुनिया भर में खलबली और सनसनी मचे बिना नहीं रह सकती। यह मामला कितना गम्भीर है, इसका इसी से अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है कि ब्रिटेन के प्रधानमंत्री श्री एटली यकायक वायुयान द्वारा अमरीकी राष्ट्रपति श्री टूमन से परामर्श करने के लिए वाशिंगटन जा रहे हैं। विश्व का जाग्रत लोकमत अणु बम जैसे घातक अस्त्र के प्रयोग के सर्वथा विरुद्ध है। स्टॉकहोम की शान्ति की अपील पर दुनिया के करोड़ों लोगों ने हस्ताक्षर किये हैं। इस अपील में अणु बम के प्रयोग को निषिद्ध करार देने की मांग की गई है। उस पर हस्ताक्षर करने वालों में सभी साम्यवादी विचार के व्यक्ति नहीं हैं। ‘हरिजन’ के सम्पादक श्री किशोरलाल मश्रूवाला जैसे व्यक्तियों ने भी उसके साथ सहमति प्रकट की है। अतः इस अपील को साम्यवादियों का प्रचार मात्र कहकर उसकी उपेक्षा नहीं की जानी चाहिए।

अब तक आधुनिक विज्ञान की सहायता से युद्ध के जितने संहारक अस्त्र आविष्कृत हुए हैं, उनमें अणुबम सबसे अधिक भयंकर है। द्वितीय महायुद्ध के अन्तिम दौर में अमरीका ने जापान के हिरोशिमा और नागासाकी शहरों पर दो अणु बम गिराये थे और उनसे मानव जीवन का जो क्रूर और व्यापक संहार हुआ था, उसको देखकर मानवता सिहर उठी थी। यह अस्त्र युद्धरत और युद्ध से अलग नागरिकों- स्त्रियों और बच्चों, किसी में भेद नहीं करता और एक विस्तृत भू-भाग से मनुष्य और मनुष्येतर सभी जीवों को नष्ट कर देता है। जो तत्काल मौत के मुंह में जाने से बच जाते हैं, वे इस कदर झुलस जाते हैं कि तड़प-तड़पकर मृत्यु का आलिंगन करते हैं। बहुत जीवन भर के लिए अपंग हो जाते हैं। ऐसे खतरनाक अस्त्र के उपयोग की कल्पना सभ्यता के तमाम दावों को मिथ्या सिद्ध करता है। अणु बम बर्बरता की निशानी है; सभ्यता की नहीं।

Even figures like Mr. Kishorlal Mashruwala, editor of “Harijan,” have agreed with him. Therefore, this appeal should not be dismissed as mere communist propaganda.

Of all the destructive weapons of war invented so far with the help of modern science, the atomic bomb is the most terrifying. In the final stages of World War II, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the brutal and widespread destruction of human life they caused shocked humanity. This weapon makes no distinction between combatants and civilians—women and children—and destroys all human and non-human creatures across a vast area. Those who escape immediate death are burned so severely that they embrace death in agony. Many are crippled for life. The very thought of using such a dangerous weapon belies all claims of civilization. The atomic bomb is a symbol of barbarism; Not of civilization.
