What AR Rahman is experiencing today is what he is speaking about.

रहमान आज जो भोग रहे, वही बोल रहे

अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर पहचान रखने वाले संगीतकार एआर रहमान अगर कहते हैं कि बॉलीवुड का सामाजिक माहौल अब पहले जैसा नहीं है, तो इसमें उन्होंने क्या गलत कहा है? अलबत्ता, पूरे देश का यही हाल है। कोई भी अपने दिल पर हाथ रखकर यह नहीं कह सकता कि आज का सामाजिक माहौल 2014 के पहले वाला भारत जैसा है। इस प्रख्यात संगीतकार ने एक साक्षात्कार में अपना दर्द खुलकर क्या बयान किया, सभी हमलावर हो उठे। उन्होंने तो यही कहा कि ‘अब सामाजिक संतुलन बदल गया है।’ गीतकार व लेखक जावेद अख्तर ने उनके आरोप को सिरे से खारिज कर दिया है, पर जम्मू-कश्मीर पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री महबूबा मुफ्ती ने प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए कहा कि जब जावेद अख्तर की बॉलीवुड में बढ़ती सांप्रदायिकता को लेकर एआर रहमान के बयान को खारिज करते हैं, तब वह वास्तव में भारतीय मुसलमानों की हकीकतों और साझा अनुभवों का भी खंडन करते हैं। इनमें उनकी पत्नी शबाना आजमी के अनुभव भी शामिल हैं, जिन्होंने कभी कहा था कि मुंबई जैसे महानगर में सिर्फ मुसलमान होने की वजह से उन्हें घर देने से इनकार किया गया था। तथ्य यही बताते हैं कि पिछले एक दशक में भारत में सांप्रदायिक तनाव बढ़ा है, जो दंगों और नफरती बयानों में बढ़ोतरी से चिह्नित होता है। बहरहाल, एआर रहमान की बातों को सिरे से खारिज कर देने से समस्या का समाधान नहीं हो सकता। इससे उन सांप्रदायिक शक्तियों को ही बल मिलेगा, जो चाहते हैं कि यह देश सिर्फ बहुसंख्यकों का हो जाए। हमें न सिर्फ रहमान साहब की बातों पर गौर करना चाहिए, बल्कि ऐसा माहौल भी बनाना चाहिए, जिसमें सभी सुकून से रह सकें। जातिगत और धार्मिक विभिन्नता के बावजूद एकता भारत की पहचान रही है। हमें इसे बरकरार रखना चाहिए।

अगर एआर रहमान ऐसा कुछ कह रहे हैं, जो उन्हें महसूस हो रहा है, तो यह सोचने की बात है, न कि उनसे लड़ने की। इसी तरह की हरकतों से देश की मेधा विदेश, खासतौर से अमेरिका चली जाती है और वहां उनकी खोजों को अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मान भी मिलता है। लोगों को अपने भाव प्रकट करने की जगह तो दो। या, हम और आप इतने ज्यादा असंवेदनशील हो गए हैं कि अपने से इतर विचारों को देश में मौजूद ही नहीं रहने देंगे? इस तरह तो देश सिर्फ एक विचारधारा, एक विचार और एक तरह के लोगों का झुंड बनकर रह जाएगा। इस तरह यहां सृजनता का अंत हो जाएगा और कोई भी देश बिना सृजनता के तरक्की नहीं कर सकता।

In fact, the same is true for the entire country. No one can honestly say that today’s social environment is the same as it was in India before 2014. When this renowned musician openly expressed his pain in an interview, everyone attacked him. He simply said that “the social balance has shifted.” Lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has completely rejected his allegations, but former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, reacting to this, said that when Javed Akhtar dismisses AR Rahman’s statement about rising communalism in Bollywood, he is actually denying the realities and shared experiences of Indian Muslims. This includes the experiences of his wife, Shabana Azmi, who once said that she was denied a house in a metropolis like Mumbai simply because she was Muslim. The facts show that communal tensions have increased in India over the past decade, marked by a rise in riots and hate speeches. However, simply dismissing AR Rahman’s words will not solve the problem. It will only empower those communal forces that want this country to belong only to the majority. We should not only consider what Rahman Sahib is saying, but also create an environment where everyone can live in peace. Unity in diversity, despite caste and religious differences, has been the hallmark of India. We must preserve this.

If AR Rahman is saying something that he feels, then it’s something to think about, not something to fight against. It is because of such actions that the country’s talent goes abroad, especially to America, where their discoveries receive international recognition. Give people a space to express their feelings. Or have we become so insensitive that we will not allow any opinions different from our own to exist in the country? In this way, the country will be reduced to nothing more than a single ideology, a single idea, and a homogeneous group of people. Creativity will be stifled, and no country can progress without creativity.
