संगीत का रंग सांप्रदायिक नहीं होता

जाने-माने संगीतकार एआर रहमान ने पिछले दिनों जो बयान दिया कि उन्हें काम मिलना कम हो गया है और इसके पीछे ‘सांप्रदायिक’ कारण हो सकते हैं, गलत है। भले ही विवाद बढ़ने पर उन्होंने सफाई भी दी, लेकिन उनको मालूम होना चाहिए कि वह एक ऑस्कर विजेता हैं और उनके महान संगीत की कद्र सभी करते हैं। भारत एक धर्मनिरपेक्ष राष्ट्र है, जहां कला और शिक्षा को पूरा महत्व दिया जाता है। अगर सांप्रदायिकता की बात होती, तो कलाम साहब राष्ट्रपति न बनते, अजहरुद्दीन टीम इंडिया की कप्तानी नहीं करते। कई अन्य उदाहरण भी हैं। रहमान साहब को काम कम मिलने की वजह दूसरी हो सकती है। उनके संगीत तो अजर-अमर हैं ही, वह खुद एक प्रतिष्ठित और सम्मानित व्यक्ति हैं। देश-दुनिया में चर्चित हैं। उनको इस तरह की बातें नहीं कहनी चाहिए।

रहमान साहब, अगर कल को गोविंदा जी आपकी ही भाषा-शैली में इंटरव्यू देते हुए यह बोलें कि मेरे साथ वर्तमान में भेदभाव हो रहा है और पिछले आठ-दस वर्षों से मुझे काम नहीं मिल रहा है और इसके पीछे वही कारण है, जो आपने बीबीसीको बताया है, तो कैसा लगेगा ? कल को क्रिकेट की दुनिया में भी आपको सुनकर मोहम्मद शमी, भुवनेश्वर कुमार, चेतेश्वर पुजारा और उमेश यादव भी यह आरोप बीसीसीआई पर लगाने लगें कि उनके साथ करियर के आखिरी दिनों में भेदभाव हुआ और उसके पीछे वही वजह थी, जो आपने बताई थी, तो आपका जवाब क्या होगा? सच तो यह है कि अगर किसी को काम नहीं मिल रहा है, तो उसके पीछे या तो उसका खुद का आलस्य है या फिर उस क्षेत्र में नए विकल्पों का आ जाना अथवा सिर्फ वक्त की मार। आप एक जवाब दीजिए, जब आपको ऑस्कर मिला था और पूरी दुनिया आपको जान गई थी, तब फिर आप क्यों नहीं उसी वक्त अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर अपनी प्रतिभा को स्थापित कर पाए ? काम करना और काम तलाशना, दो अलग-अलग चीजें हैं। काम करने वाला कभी यह नहीं कहता कि काम नहीं मिल रहा है, बल्कि वह तो खुद दूसरों को काम देता है। आप इतने बड़े संगीतकार हैं कि लोगों को आप काम दे सकते थे, पर ऐसा नहीं हुआ। अतीत में, मोहम्मद रफी साहब को भी काम न मिला होगा, गोविंदा को भी नहीं मिला होगा, अमिताभ बच्चन को भी इसी तरह के दौर से गुजरना पड़ा होगा, लेकिन इन लोगों ने कभी आपकी तरह सांप्रदायिक बातें नहीं कहीं। आपने बॉलीवुड में सांप्रदायिक भेदभाव होने संबंधी बयान देकर अपनी पूरी 30 साल की मेहनत पर एक तरह से पानी फेर दिया है।

The statement recently made by renowned musician AR Rahman, claiming that he is receiving fewer work opportunities and that there might be ‘communal’ reasons behind it, is incorrect. Even though he later clarified his statement after the controversy escalated, he should know that he is an Oscar winner and his great music is appreciated by all. India is a secular nation where art and education are given due importance. If communalism were a factor, Kalam Sahib would not have become President, and Azharuddin would not have captained the Indian cricket team. There are many other examples. The reason for Rahman Sahib receiving less work might be something else entirely. His music is timeless, and he himself is a respected and honored individual. He is famous throughout the country and the world. He shouldn’t be making such statements.

Rahman Sahib, how would you feel if tomorrow Govinda Ji, using your same language and style, gave an interview saying that he is currently facing discrimination and hasn’t received work for the past eight or ten years, and that the reason is the same one you mentioned to the BBC? What would your response be if, inspired by your statement, cricketers like Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Umesh Yadav also started accusing the BCCI of discrimination in the twilight of their careers, citing the same reason you gave? The truth is, if someone isn’t getting work, it’s either due to their own laziness, the emergence of new options in that field, or simply the vagaries of time. Answer this: when you won the Oscar and the whole world recognized you, why didn’t you establish yourself internationally at that time? Working and seeking work are two different things. A person who works never says they aren’t getting work; instead, they give work to others. You are such a great musician that you could have given work to others, but that didn’t happen. In the past, even Mohammed Rafi Sahab must have faced periods without work, as must have Govinda, and Amitabh Bachchan too must have gone through similar struggles. But these people never made communal remarks like you have. By making statements about communal discrimination in Bollywood, you have essentially ruined all your 30 years of hard work.
