खुद को कहां जान पाए
अपने आपको जानने की कोई पद्धति नहीं है। किसी पद्धति को खोजने का एक ही अर्थ होगा कि हम किसी परिणाम को हासिल करना चाहते हैं; और वही तो हम सभी को चाहिए। हम किसी सत्ता-प्रामाण्य का अनुसरण करते हैं। यदि यह किसी व्यक्ति का नहीं है, तो किसी पद्धति या विचारधारा का हो सकता है, क्योंकि हम कोई ऐसा परिणाम चाहते हैं, जो संतोषजनक हो और हमें सुरक्षा दे सके।
हम वास्तव में अपने को, अपने आवेगों और अपनी प्रतिक्रिया को, अपने सोचने की समस्त प्रक्रियाओं को, चाहे वे चेतन हों अथवा अचेतन, समझना नहीं चाहते, बल्कि हम उस प्रणाली का अनुसरण करना पसंद करते हैं, जो हमें किसी परिणाम का आश्वासन दे सके। किसी विधिका अनुसरण निश्चित तौर पर सुरक्षा पाने की हमारी अभिलाषा का परिणाम है और स्पष्ट है कि कोई भी परिणाम स्वयं की समझ नहीं है। जब हम किसी पद्धतिका अनुसरण करते हैं, तो हमें व्यक्ति, आचार्य, गुरु, उद्धारक, महात्मा की आवश्यकता पड़ती है।…
सत्ता या प्रमाण हमें स्वयं को समझने से रोकते हैं। क्या ગુમાવી પફળી ऐसा नहीं है? किसी मार्गदर्शक की शरण में जाने से आपको अस्थायी रूप से सुरक्षा का, अपने कल्याण का बोध हो सकता है, लेकिन यह स्वयं की समूची प्रक्रिया को समझना नहीं है। प्रमाण या प्रामाण्य का स्वरूप ही ऐसा है कि वह आपको अपने प्रति पूर्णतया सचेत नहीं होने देता और इस प्रकार अंततः स्वतंत्रता छीन लेता है और सर्जनशीलता तो केवल स्वतंत्रता में ही संभव है। सर्जनशीलता केवल स्वबोध से आ सकती है।
हममें से अधिकांश लोग सर्जनशील नहीं हैं। हम दोहराने वाली मशीनें हैं। हम केवल ग्रामोफोन के रेकॉर्ड हैं, जो वार-बार अपने या दूसरों के किन्हीं अनुभवों, निष्कर्षों या स्मृतियों के गीत गाते हैं। दोहराना सर्जनशील होना नहीं है, पर हम दोहराते रहना चाहते हैं। चूंकि हम भीतर से सुरक्षित होना चाहते हैं, हम निरंतर इस सुरक्षा के लिए पद्धतियों व विधियों की खोज में लगे रहते हैं और इस प्रकार हम किसी सत्ता या प्रमाण को स्थापित कर लेते हैं, किसी दूसरे की पूजा करने लगते हैं। इससे समझ और सूझ-बूझ, मन की वह सहज शांति नष्ट हो जाती है, जो सर्जनशील अवस्था के लिए अपरिहार्य है।
हमारी कठिनाई यही है कि हमने सर्जनशीलता के इस बोध को खो दिया है। सर्जनशील होने का यह अर्थ नहीं है कि हम चित्रकारी करें, कविताएं लिखें और प्रसिद्ध हो जाएं। अभिव्यक्ति की क्षमता और सर्जनशीलता दो अलग बातें हैं। सर्जनशीलता ऐसी अवस्था है, जिसमें स्व मौजूद नहीं रहता, जिसमें मन हमारे अनुभवों, हमारी महत्वाकांक्षाओं और हमारी इच्छाओं का केंद्र नहीं बना रहता। यही वह अवस्था है, जिसमें वह यथार्थ संभव होता है, जो सभी वस्तुओं का सर्जक है।
किसी मार्गदर्शक की शरण में जाने से आपको अस्थायी रूप से सुरक्षा का, अपने कल्याण का बोध हो सकता है, लेकिन यह स्वयं की समूची प्रक्रिया को समझना नहीं है।

There is no method for knowing oneself. To seek a method would only mean that we want to achieve a result; and that is what we all want. We follow some authority. If it is not a person, it may be a method or an ideology, because we want a result that is satisfying and gives us security.
We don’t really want to understand ourselves, our impulses and reactions, all our thought processes, whether conscious or unconscious; rather, we prefer to follow a system that assures us of a result. Following a method is certainly a result of our desire for security, and it is clear that any result is not self-understanding. When we follow a method, we need a person, a teacher, a guru, a savior, a saint…
Authority prevents us from understanding ourselves. Isn’t that so? Taking refuge in a guide may give you a temporary sense of security, of well-being, but it is not understanding the whole process of oneself. The very nature of authority is such that it prevents you from being fully aware of yourself, and thus ultimately takes away freedom, and creativity is only possible in freedom. Creativity can only come from self-knowledge.
Most of us are not creative. We are repeating machines. We are merely gramophone records, constantly playing the same songs of our own or others’ experiences, conclusions, or memories. Repeating is not being creative, yet we want to keep repeating. Because we want to be secure inwardly, we are constantly searching for methods and systems for this security, and thus we establish some authority, we begin to worship someone else. This destroys understanding and insight, that natural peace of mind which is essential for a creative state.
Our difficulty is that we have lost this sense of creativity. Being creative doesn’t mean painting pictures, writing poems, and becoming famous. The capacity for expression and creativity are two different things. Creativity is a state in which the self is absent, in which the mind is no longer the center of our experiences, our ambitions, and our desires. It is in this state that the reality that is the creator of all things becomes possible.
Taking refuge in a guru or guide may give you a temporary sense of security and well-being, but it is not the same as understanding the entire process of the self.
