एक बार एक संत ने एक व्यक्तिको दो पोटली दी और कहा कि एक पोटली को आगे की तरफ लटकाना और दूसरी को कंधे के पीछे पीठ पर। आदमी दोनों पोटलियां लेकर चल पड़ा। संत ने ये भी कहा था कि आगे वाली पोटली पर नजर रखना, पीछे वाली पर नहीं।
समय बीतता गया। वह आदमी आगे वाली पोटली पर बराबर नजर रखता था। आगे वाली पोटली में उसकी कमियां थीं और पीछे वाली में दुनिया की। वह अपनी कमियां सुधारता गया और तरक्की करता गया और पीछे वाली पोटली को इसने नजरंदाज कर रखा था।
एक दिन तालाब में नहाने के बाद दोनों पोटलियां अदल-बदल हो गई। आगे वाली पीछे और पीछे
वाली आगे आ गई। अब उसेदुनिया की कमियां ही कमियां नजर आने लगी। ये ठीक नहीं, वो ठीक नहीं। बच्चे ठीक नहीं, पड़ोसी बेकार है, सरकारनिक्कमी है आदि। अब वह खुद के अलावा सब में कमियां ढूंढ़ने लगा। परिणाम ये हुआ कि बाकी दुनिया में तो कोई सुधार नहीं हुआ, पर उसका खुद का पतन होने लगा। वह चक्कर में पड़ गया कि ये क्या हुआ है?
वो वापस संत के पास गया। संत ने उसे समझाया, ‘जब तक तेरी नजर अपनी कमियों पर थी तो तू तरक्की कर रहा था। जैसे ही तुमने दूसरों में मीन-मेख देखने शुरू कर दिए, वहीं से गड़बड़ शुरू हो गई। हमें यह समझना चाहिए कि हम किसी को नहीं सुधार सकते, हम अपने आपको सुधार लें, इसी में हमारी भलाई है। हम सुधरेंगे तो जग सुधरेगा।
