सिलीगुड़ी कॉरिडोर हमारी राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा को दृष्टि से सबसे संवेदनशील और रणनीतिक बिंदुओं में से एक है। बदलते क्षेत्रीय हालात, वास्तविक नियंत्रण रेखा पर चीन की अराक्रामक गतिविधियां, बांग्लादेश में राजनीतिक अस्थिरता और उससे उपजी अवैध घुसपैठ के बीच इस कॉरिडोर को सुदृढ़ करना अब राष्ट्रीय अनिवार्यता बन चुका है। अच्छी बात है कि सरकार का इस तरफ ध्यान है। विहार के किशनगंज जिले में प्रस्तावित भारतीय सेना का अग्रिम शिविर इसी दिशा में एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण कदम है।

गौरतलब है, सिलीगुड़ी कॉरिडोर न केवल सैन्य रसद, व्यापारिक मार्गों और आपदा प्रबंधन के लिए अहम है, बल्कि यह देश की सामरिक एकता का प्रतीक भी है। भारतीय सेना को योजना किशनगंज के बहादुरगंज-कोचाधामन प्रखंडों में लगभग 250 एकड़ भूमि अधिग्रहित कर एक अग्रिम सैन्य अड्डा स्थापित करने की है। यह पहल असम के बामुनी, पश्चिम बंगाल के चोपड़ा और किशनगंज में नए सैन्य ठिकानों की व्यापक रणनीति का हिस्सा है। भारत-बांग्लादेश नेपाल त्रि-जंक्शन के निकट स्थित किशनगंज सिलीगुड़ी कॉरिडोर के लिए एक प्राकृतिक सुरक्षा कवच की तरह कार्य कर सकता है। यहां से सीमा पार गतिविधियों पर निगरानी, तस्करी पर नियंत्रण और संकट के समय मानवीय सहायता को तेजी से पहुंचाना संभव होगा। ये ऐसी भूमिकाएं हैं, जिनको भारतीय सेना ने डोकलाम गतिरोध से लेकर बिहार और बंगाल में बाढ़ राहत अभियानों तक बखूबी निभाया है।

यह दुखद है कि इस रणनीतिक परियोजना को स्थानीय राजनीति का विषय बना दिया गया है, लेकिन आलोचकों को समझना होगा कि किशनगंज जैसे सीमावर्ती जिले में, जहां जन-सांख्यिकीय बदलावों को लेकर पहले से ही संवेदनशीलता है, इस तरह का विरोध देश की अखंडता के लिए प्रतिकूल संदेश दे सकता है। बांग्लादेश के करीब होने की वजह से लगातार घुसपैठ यहां देश के लिए गंभीर खतरा पैदा कर रही है। खासकर चिकन नेक के करीब होना, इस मसले को और अधिक चिंताजनक बना रहा है। ऐसे में, सैन्य उपस्थिति कानून-व्यवस्था और सीमायी निगरानी को भी सुदृढ़ करेगी। सैन्य छावनी का अर्थ केवल हथियारबंद सुरक्षा नहीं, बल्कि इससे स्थानीय स्तर पर रोजगार, आधारभूत ढांचे का विकास, सड़क व संचार सुविधाओं में सुधार तथा आपदा के समय त्वरित राहत जैसी बहुआयामी संभावनाएं जुड़ी हैं, लिहाजा किशनगंज में सेना शिविर का निर्माण आगे बढ़ना चाहिए। सिलीगुड़ी कॉरिडोर की सुरक्षा से कोई समझौता नहीं हो सकता।

The Siliguri Corridor is one of the most sensitive and strategic points from the perspective of our national security. Given the changing regional dynamics, China’s aggressive activities along the Line of Actual Control, political instability in Bangladesh, and the resulting illegal immigration, strengthening this corridor has become a national imperative. It is commendable that the government is paying attention to this. The proposed forward operating base of the Indian Army in Kishanganj district of Bihar is a crucial step in this direction.

It is noteworthy that the Siliguri Corridor is not only vital for military logistics, trade routes, and disaster management, but it is also a symbol of the country’s strategic unity. The Indian Army plans to acquire approximately 250 acres of land in the Bahadurganj-Kochadhaman blocks of Kishanganj to establish a forward military base. This initiative is part of a broader strategy of establishing new military bases in Bamuni in Assam, Chopra in West Bengal, and Kishanganj. Located near the India-Bangladesh-Nepal tri-junction, Kishanganj can act as a natural security shield for the Siliguri Corridor. From here, it will be possible to monitor cross-border activities, control smuggling, and provide rapid humanitarian assistance during times of crisis. These are roles that the Indian Army has performed admirably, from the Doklam standoff to flood relief operations in Bihar and Bengal.

It is unfortunate that this strategic project has been made a subject of local politics, but critics must understand that in a border district like Kishanganj, where there is already sensitivity regarding demographic changes, such opposition can send an adverse message regarding the country’s integrity. Due to its proximity to Bangladesh, continuous infiltration poses a serious threat to the country. Being close to the “Chicken’s Neck” makes this issue even more concerning. In such a situation, a military presence will also strengthen law and order and border surveillance. A military cantonment means more than just armed security; it also brings multifaceted benefits such as local employment, infrastructure development, improved road and communication facilities, and swift relief during disasters. Therefore, the construction of the army camp in Kishanganj should proceed. There can be no compromise on the security of the Siliguri Corridor.
