गुरु का अपमान कर पराजित हुए इंद्र
एक समय इंद्र को अपने पद और वैभव का अहंकार हो गया। एक दिन देवगुरु बृहस्पति इंद्र के सभा-भवन में आए। देवताओं ने गुरु बृहस्पति का स्वागत किया। उन्हें आदरपूर्वक प्रणाम किया, किंतु इंद्र न तो अपने सिंहासन से उठे, न उन्हें प्रणाम ही किया। इंद्र के इस व्यवहार से बृहस्पति ने अपना अपमान अनुभव किया। वे जिस प्रकार सभा-भवन न में में आए आए थे, थे, उसी प्रकार पुनः लौट गए। वे समझ गए कि इंद्र को अपने पद और वैभव का अभिमान हो गया है।
बृहस्पति के जाने के बाद इंद्र को अपनी भूल का भान हुआ। वह मन-ही-मन पश्चाताप करने लगे। उन्होंने निश्चय किया कि वह गुरु के पास जाकर अपनी भूल के लिए क्षमा-याचना करेंगे। किंतु क्षमा-याचना के कपूर्वर पूर्व ही दैत्यों ने स्वर्ग पर धावा बोल दिया। देवताओं ने दैत्यों का सामना किया, लेकिन वे पराजित हो गए। इंद्र को देवताओं सहित स्वर्ग छोड़ना पड़ा। हारकर इंद्र देवताओं सहित ब्रह्मा के पास गए और उनसे अपने उद्धार का उपाय पूछा।
ब्रह्मा ने इंद्र से कहा, ‘देवराज, आपने गुरु बृहस्पति का अपमान करके अच्छा नहीं किया। गुरु का अपमान करने के कारण आपका तेज और शौर्य मंद पड़ गया है।’
ब्रह्मा के कथन को सुनकर देवता बहुत दुखी हुए। इंद्र ने कहा, ‘पितामह, हम आपकी शरण में हैं। आपको हमारी रक्षा के लिए कोई-न-कोई उपाय बताना ही होगा।’
ब्रह्मा ने सोचते हुए कहा, ‘एक ही उपाय है। आप त्वष्टा के पुत्र विश्वरूप के पास जाइए। वे आपकी व्यथा को सुनकर अवश्य आप पर कृपा करेंगे। आपको कोई-न-कोई उपाय बताएंगे।
ब्रह्मा की सलाह से इंद्र देवताओं सहित विश्वरूप की सेवा में उपस्थित हुए। उन्होंने विश्वरूप को अपना दुख बताया और उनसे निवेदन किया कि वे देवताओं की रक्षा के लिए कोई उपाय बताएं।
विश्वरूप ने इंद्र को नारायण कवच देते हुए कहा, ‘देवराज, आप ‘ओम नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय’ मंत्र का जाप करें और नारायण कवच को पहन कर दैत्यों से युद्ध करेंगे, तो युद्ध में आपको विजय प्राप्त होगी।’ इंद्र ने विश्वरूप की आज्ञा का पालन किया। इंद्र ने मंत्र का जाप करने के पश्चात कवच को पहन कर, दैत्यों से युद्ध किया और उन्हें विजय प्राप्त हुई।

Once, Indra became arrogant about his position and grandeur. One day, Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, arrived at Indra’s assembly hall. The gods welcomed Brihaspati, respectfully bowing to him, but Indra neither rose from his throne nor bowed to him. Brihaspati felt insulted by Indra’s behavior. He returned to the assembly hall in the same manner in which he had entered. He understood that Indra had become proud of his position and grandeur.
After Brihaspati’s departure, Indra realized his mistake and began to repent. He decided to go to his guru and apologize. But before he could apologize, the demons attacked heaven. The gods confronted the demons, but were defeated. Indra and the gods had to leave heaven. Defeated, Indra and the gods went to Brahma and asked for a way to save themselves.
Brahma said to Indra, “Devraja, you did wrong by insulting Guru Brihaspati. Your brilliance and bravery have diminished because of your disrespect.”
Hearing Brahma’s words, the gods were deeply saddened. Indra said, “Grandfather, we are at your mercy. You must suggest some way to protect us.”
Brahma thought and said, “There is only one solution. Go to Vishvarupa, the son of Tvashta. He will surely be gracious to you after hearing your plight. He will suggest some solution.”
On Brahma’s advice, Indra, along with the gods, appeared before Vishvarupa. They shared their plight with Vishvarupa and requested him to suggest a solution to protect the gods.
Vishvarupa gave Indra the Narayana Kavach, saying, “Devraja, chant the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay’ and wear the Narayana Kavach while fighting the demons. You will be victorious in the battle.” Indra obeyed Vishvarupa’s command. After chanting the mantra, Indra donned the armor and fought the demons, and he was victorious.
