भारत ने पाकिस्तान के साथ मैच आराम से जीत लिया। यह कोई चौंकने वाली बात नहीं रह गई है। पिछले दस साल में भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम जिस तरह से बनी है, उसकी फिटनेस, बेंच स्ट्रेंथ, घरेलू ढांचा और आईपीएल से निकली प्रतिभा ने उसे एक स्थिर, पेशेवर और लगातार जीतने वाली टीम बना दिया है। दूसरी तरफ पाकिस्तान की टीम अक्सर बिखरी हुई दिखती है। यह खेल की सच्चाई है। हालांकि, भारत-पाकिस्तान मैच में हर बार एक नाटक होता है- औपचारिकताओं के दौरान हाथ न मिलाना, चेहरे पर सख्ती, कैमरे की तरफ देखते हुए रुखा संदेश। जैसे यह जताना हो कि यह सिर्फ क्रिकेट मैच नहीं, कुछ और है। अगर सच में ऐसा है, तो मैच के दौरान रोहित शर्मा का वसीम अकरम से हंसते हुए मिलना क्या था ? रोहित, वसीम से हाथ भी मिला रहे थे ? कमेंट्री बॉक्स में हरभजन सिंह, नवजोत सिंह सिद्ध और मिसबाह उल हक का साथ बैठकर विश्लेषण करना क्या था ? मिसबाह ‘भाई’ पुकारा गया। भारतीय टीवी स्टूडियो में पाकिस्तानी खिलाड़ी विशेषज्ञ बनकर बैठाए जा रहे हैं। तो, सवाल यह है कि हाथ न मिलाने का प्रदर्शन आखिर किसके लिए है? कहा जाता है यह एक संदेश है, लेकिन संदेश किसे दिया जा रहा है- विपक्षी टीम को ? दुनिया को? या सिर्फ घरेलू दर्शकों को ?

सच यह है कि भारत-पाकिस्तान मैच दुनिया का सबसे महंगा क्रिकेट प्रोडक्ट है। प्रसारण अधिकार, विज्ञापन, डिजिटल व्यूअरशिप, स्पॉन्सरशिप सब कुछ इसी मुकाबले पर टिका होता है। पूरा तंत्र इस एक मैच से कमाई करता है। जब आप साथ खेल रहे हैं, साथ कमेंट्री कर रहे हैं, साथ ब्रॉडकास्ट कर रहे हैं, तब सिर्फ एक औपचारिक ‘हैंडशेक’ रोक देना किस नीति का हिस्सा है? अगर देश की नीति है कि संबंध सामान्य नहीं हैं, इसलिए द्विपक्षीय क्रिकेट नहीं होना चाहिए, तो यह समझ में आता है। यह बंद भी है, लेकिन बाकी जगहों पर साथ खेलते हैं, साथ काम करते हैं, पर टॉस के समय हाथ नहीं मिलाते। राष्ट्रीय स्वाभिमान इतना कमजोर नहीं होता कि महज हाथ मिलाने से टूट जाए। कैमरे के सामने कठोरता और कैमरे के पीछे सहजता का जो विरोधाभास है, वह न तो खेल की गरिमा के अनुकूल है और न उस स्वाभिमान के, जिसकी रक्षा का दावा किया जाता है। स्वाभिमान स्पष्टता से आता है। या तो मत खेलिए, सिद्धांत के आधार पर पूरी दूरी बनाकर रखिए, या फिर खेलिए, पेशेवर तरीका अपनाइए और हाथ मिलाइए। क्रिकेट में श्रेष्ठता बल्ले और गेंद से साबित होती है, इशारों से नहीं।

India comfortably won the match against Pakistan. This is no longer surprising. The way the Indian cricket team has been built over the last ten years—its fitness, bench strength, domestic structure, and talent unearthed through the IPL—has made it a stable, professional, and consistently winning team. On the other hand, the Pakistani team often appears scattered. This is the reality of the game. However, every India-Pakistan match involves a drama—no handshakes during formalities, a stern expression, a curt message while looking at the camera—as if to convey that this is something more than just a cricket match. If this is true, then why did Rohit Sharma greet Wasim Akram with a smile during the match? Was Rohit also shaking hands with Wasim? What was the point of Harbhajan Singh, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Misbah-ul-Haq sitting together in the commentary box and analyzing? Misbah was called “brother.” Pakistani players are being employed as experts in Indian TV studios. So, the question is, who is this demonstration of not shaking hands for? It’s said to be a message, but who is the message being sent—to the opposing team? To the world? Or just to the home crowd?

The truth is that India-Pakistan matches are the most expensive cricketing production in the world. Broadcast rights, advertising, digital viewership, sponsorship, everything hinges on this match. The entire system generates revenue from this one match. When you’re playing together, commentating together, and broadcasting together, what policy is it to stop just a formal handshake? If the country’s policy is that bilateral cricket shouldn’t be played because relations are not normal, then that’s understandable. It’s stopped, but elsewhere we play together, work together, but don’t shake hands at the toss. National pride isn’t so weak that it can be shattered by a mere handshake. The contradiction between toughness in front of the camera and ease behind it is neither conducive to the dignity of the game nor to the self-respect it claims to uphold. Self-respect comes from clarity. Either don’t play, maintain a principled distance, or play, maintain a professional attitude, and shake hands. In cricket, superiority is established with bat and ball, not gestures.
