देवदूत और चौथा आदमी
एक देवदूत मनुष्यों और उनके जगत को देखने एक बार धरती पर आया। धरती के सौंदर्य ने उसे अभिभूत कर दिया : सूर्य की रोशनी में चमकते पर्वत शिखर, गहरे हरे जंगल, सनसनाती हवाएं, बहती नदियां, इंद्रधनुषी घाटियां, मिट्टी की सोंधी सुगंध, पशु, भयावह व सौम्य सब ओर सौंदर्य बिखरा हुआ था। जब उसने मनुष्य को देखा, तो वह विस्मित रह गया, क्योंकि वह मानव-हृदय का संगीत और मानव-प्राणों का गीत सुन पा रहा था। वह मानवीय रहस्य के प्रेम में पड़ गया।
पृथ्वी के अनुभव ने देवदूत को इतना आह्लादित कर दिया था कि लौटने से पहले वह कुछ मनुष्यों की मदद करना चाहता था। उसने अपनी नजर दौड़ाई और देखा कि चार लोग एक साथ चले आ रहे हैं। वह उनके पास गया और बोला, ‘मैं तुम सबको एक-एक वरदान देने आया हूं।’ संयोग से वे चारों आध्यात्मिक अभ्यर्थी थे। पहला खोजी बोला, मैं सत्य की खोज में अथक परिश्रम करता रहा हूं-संघर्ष, संघर्ष और संघर्ष। मुझे आध्यात्मिक शांति दे दें, संतुष्टि देदें।’ देवदूत बोला, ‘लेकिन संघर्ष तो जीवन के आनंदों में से एक है।’ खोजी बोला, ‘मुझे शांति चाहिए।’ देवदूत ने उसे गाय बना दिया, जो निपट एकांत में घास चर रही थी और संतुष्ट थी।
देवदूत दूसरे खोजी की ओर उन्मुख हुआ। वह बोला, ‘परमात्मा शुद्ध है, पर मैं नहीं हूं। कृपया मुझे वासनाओं, भावनाओं, इच्छाओं की अशुद्धियों से मुक्त कर दें।’ देवदूत ने पूछा, ‘लेकिन क्या ये ही जीवन के उत्स नहीं हैं?’ दूसरे खोजी ने कहा, ‘मुझे जीवन नहीं, शुद्धता चाहिए।’ उसने अपनी आंखें बंद कर लीं और अपने रूपांतरण की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा। कुछ ही क्षणों में वह गायब हो गया और उसकी शक्ल की संगमरमर की एक मूर्ति सुदूर मंदिर में प्रकट हो गई।
तीसरा खोजी बोला, ‘मुझे परिपूर्ण बना दो। उससे कम कुछ भी नहीं चलेगा।’ वह ओझल हो गया, पर कहीं प्रकट प्रकट नहीं नहीं हुआ, हुआ, क्योंकि व इस पृथ्वी पर न तो कुछ परिपूर्ण है और न हो सकता है। देवदूत चौथे की ओर मुड़ा और पूछा, ‘तुम्हारी कामना?’ वह मुस्कराता हुआ बोला, ‘मेरी कोई कामना नहीं है।’ देवदूत ने फिर पूछा, ‘कोई भी कामना नहीं ?’ चौथा खोजी बोला, ‘एक जीवंत मनुष्य होने के अतिरिक्त मेरी कोई कामना नहीं।’ देवदूत उल्लास में डूब गया। उसने आकांक्षा से भरकर उस धन्य व्यक्ति को देखा और उसे प्रेम भरे आलिंगन में ले लिया। वह चौथा व्यक्ति अपने रास्ते चला गया। जीवन के गीत गाता हुआ, आंह्लाद से भरकर नाचता हुआ।
तुम पृथ्वी पर एक पुरुष हो, स्त्री हो, परमात्मा के इस उपहार में हर्षित हो जाओ। गहन अहोभाव से गीत गाओ, उस नृत्य को बाहर लाओ, जो तुम्हारे भीतर अभिव्यक्त होने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है। सृजनात्मक बन खिल उठो !
चौथा खोजी बोला, ‘एक जीवंत मनुष्य होने के अतिरिक्त मेरी कोई कामना नहीं।’ देवदूत उल्लास में डूब गया। उसने उसे आलिंगन में ले लिया। चौथा व्यक्ति गीत गाता हुआ अपनी राह बढ़ गया।

An angel once came to Earth to observe humans and their world. The beauty of Earth overwhelmed him: mountain peaks shining in the sunlight, deep green forests, crisp winds, flowing rivers, iridescent valleys, the sweet scent of soil, animals, both terrifying and gentle—beauty was everywhere. When he saw humans, he was astonished, for he could hear the music of the human heart and the song of the human soul. He fell in love with the mystery of humanity.
The experience on Earth had so delighted the angel that before returning, he wanted to help some humans. He looked around and saw four people walking together. He approached them and said, “I have come to give you each a boon.” Coincidentally, all four were spiritual aspirants. The first seeker said, “I have been tirelessly searching for truth—struggle, struggle, and struggle. Give me spiritual peace, give me satisfaction.” The angel said, “But struggle is one of life’s joys.” The seeker said, “I want peace.” The angel transformed him into a cow, grazing in solitude and content.
The angel turned to the second seeker. He said, “God is pure, but I am not. Please free me from the impurities of passion, emotions, and desires.” The angel asked, “But aren’t these the very sources of life?” The second seeker said, “I don’t want life, I want purity.” He closed his eyes and waited for his transformation. Within moments, he vanished, and a marble statue of his likeness appeared in a distant temple.
The third seeker said, “Make me perfect. Nothing less will do.” He vanished, but he never reappeared, because nothing on this earth is perfect, and nothing can be. The angel turned to the fourth and asked, “What is your wish?” He smiled and said, “I have no desires.” The angel asked again, “No desires?” The fourth seeker said, “I have no desires except to be a living human being.” The angel was filled with joy. He looked at the blessed man with longing and embraced him with love. The fourth man went on his way, singing the songs of life, dancing with joy.
You are a man, a woman on earth; rejoice in this gift from God. Sing with deep awe, bring out the dance that is waiting to be expressed within you. Become creative and blossom!
The fourth seeker said, “I have no desires except to be a living human being.” The angel was filled with joy. He embraced him. The fourth man went on his way, singing a song.
