According to psychologists, negative thoughts affect our mind more. Despite good and bad things being of equal importance, we remain associated with negative situations for a long time. Professor Katherine Norris, associated with the subject of psychology and neuroscience, says in an article in the Washington Post, ‘If we see a normal picture repeatedly, then its effect on the brain starts to diminish. But this does not happen with a negative picture. When the picture is repeatedly exposed, the brain pays more attention to it.’
However, this negative bias of the brain also has its benefits. It makes us alert and protects us from harm. But, negativity all the time increases stress, sadness and restlessness. In such a situation, some small things can help us stay positive-
Make gratitude a habit: Write about some things every day that make you happy. Writing about the thing you value prepares us for a new habit. Connect with others constructively: Negativity makes us selfish. Helping others can help overcome it.
Be negative about your bad habit: If you want to quit a bad habit, then increase your negativity towards that bad habit.
