बुद्धि
एक राजा की कोई संतान नहीं थी। उम्र ढलती जा रही थी। राजा को चिंता सताने लगी कि मेरे बाद राज पाट कौन संभालेगा? राजा को उपाय सूझा। उसने एक महल बनवाया और उसके मुख्य द्वार पर गणित का एक सूत्र लिखवा दिया। पूरे राज्य में यह मुनादी कर दी कि इस सूत्र को हल करने पर ही यह दरवाजा खुलेगा। जो इसे हल करेगा वही राज्य का उत्तराधिकारी बनाया जाएगा।
बड़े-बड़े गणितज्ञ व विद्वान सूत्र को हल करने के लिए पहुंचने लगे, लेकिन कोई भी उस सूत्र को हल नहीं कर सका। कुछ दिन बाद प्रयास करने वाले आने ही बंद हो गए। राजा ने पास के राज्यों में भी खबर पहुंचा दी। प्रलोभन अच्छा था, तो दूसरे राज्यों से भी लोग आने लगे। कुछ दिन बाद वहां से भी लोगों का आना कम हो गया।
एक दिन केवल दो ही लोग पहुंचे। एक गणितज्ञ था और एक साधारण युवक। युवक के वस्त्र देख कर द्वारपाल उस पर गुस्सा होने लगा। ये भी कह दिया कि तुम से नहीं हो पाएगा। राजा ने जब देखा, तो दोनों को रोक लिया और युवक को सूत्र हल करने के लिए बुलाया। इस पर युवक ने कहा कि आप पहले विद्वान व्यक्ति को मौका दें। राजा राजी हो गए।
वह गणितज्ञ शाम ढलने तक प्रयास करता रहा, पर कुछ न हुआ। अब युवक को बुलाया गया। उसने पास जाकर कुछ देर सोचा और फिर अचानक द्वार को तेज धक्का दिया। द्वार खुल गया, तालियां बजने लगी।
राजा ने पूछा कि आप कैसे कर पाए? युवक ने कहा, ‘जब मैंने विद्वान व्यक्ति को जूझते हुए देखा, तो मुझे लगा कि यह भी हो सकता है कि ये कोई गणित का सूत्र ही न हो। यह केवल बुद्धि परखने के लिए लिखा गया हो।’ राजा प्रसन्न हो गए। उन्हें अपना उत्तराधिकारी मिल चुका था।
A king had no children. His age was advancing, and he began to worry about who would rule the kingdom after him. The king came up with a plan. He had a palace built and had a mathematical formula inscribed on its main gate. He announced throughout the kingdom that the gate would only open if the formula was solved. Whoever solved it would be made the heir to the throne.
Many great mathematicians and scholars arrived to solve the formula, but none could. After a few days, people stopped coming. The king sent word to neighboring kingdoms as well. The reward was tempting, so people started coming from other kingdoms too. After some time, the number of people coming from there also decreased.
One day, only two people arrived. One was a mathematician, and the other was an ordinary young man. Seeing the young man’s clothes, the gatekeeper became angry and said, “You won’t be able to do it.” When the king saw them, he stopped them both and called the young man to try solving the formula. The young man said, “Please give the scholar a chance first.” The king agreed.
The mathematician tried until evening, but to no avail. Now the young man was called. He went closer, thought for a while, and then suddenly pushed the gate hard. The gate opened, and applause erupted.
The king asked, “How did you do it?” The young man replied, “When I saw the scholar struggling, I thought that perhaps it wasn’t a mathematical formula at all. It might have been written simply to test one’s intelligence.” The king was pleased. He had found his successor.
