एक ट्रेन तेज गति से दौड़ रही थी, ट्रेन अंग्रेजों से भरी हुई थी, उसी ट्रेन के एक डिब्बे में अंग्रेजों के साथ एक भारतीय भी बैठा हुआ था।

डिब्बा अंग्रेजों से खचाखच भरा हुआ था। वे सभी उस भारतीय का मजाक उड़ाते जा रहे थे। कोई कह रहा था, देखो कौन नमूना ट्रेन में बैठ गया, तो कोई उनकी वेश-भूषा देखकर उन्हें गंवार कहकर हँस रहा था।कोई तो इतने गुस्से में था कि ट्रेन को कोसकर चिल्ला रहा था, एक भारतीय को ट्रेन मे चढ़ने क्यों दिया ? इसे डिब्बे से उतारो।

किँतु उस धोती-कुर्ता, काला कोट एवं सिर पर पगड़ी पहने शख्स पर इसका कोई प्रभाव नही पड़ा।वह शांत गम्भीर भाव लिये बैठा था, मानो किसी उधेड़-बुन मे लगा हो।

ट्रेन द्रुत गति से दौड़े जा रही थी औऱ अंग्रेजों का उस भारतीय का उपहास, अपमान भी उसी गति से जारी था।किन्तु यकायक वह शख्स सीट से उठा और जोर से चिल्लाया “ट्रेन रोको”।कोई कुछ समझ पाता उसके पूर्व ही उसने ट्रेन की जंजीर खींच दी।ट्रेन रुक गईं।

अब तो जैसे अंग्रेजों का गुस्सा फूट पड़ा।सभी उसको गालियां दे रहे थे,गंवार, जितने भी शब्द शब्दकोश मे थे, बौछार कर रहे थे,किंतु वह शख्स गम्भीर मुद्रा में शांत खड़ा था। मानो उसपर किसी की बात का कोई असर न पड़ रहा हो, उसकी चुप्पी अंग्रेजों का गुस्सा और बढा रही थी।

ट्रेन का गार्ड दौड़ा-दौड़ा आया. कड़क आवाज में पूछा, “किसने ट्रेन रोकी”।
कोई अंग्रेज बोलता उसके पहले ही, वह शख्स बोल उठा:- “मैंने रोकी श्रीमान”।
पागल हो क्या ? पहली बार ट्रेन में बैठे हो ? तुम्हें पता है, अकारण ट्रेन रोकना अपराध हैं:- “गार्ड गुस्से में बोला”
हाँ श्रीमान ! ज्ञात है किंतु मैं ट्रेन न रोकता तो सैकड़ो लोगो की जान चली जाती।

उस शख्स की बात सुनकर सब जोर-जोर से हंसने लगे। किँतु उसने बिना विचलित हुये, पूरे आत्मविश्वास के साथ कहा:- यहाँ से करीब एक फरलाँग की दूरी पर पटरी टूटी हुई हैं।आप चाहे तो चलकर देख सकते है।

गार्ड के साथ वह शख्स और कुछ अंग्रेज सवारी भी साथ चल दी। रास्ते भर भी अंग्रेज उस पर फब्तियां कसने मे कोई कोर-कसर नही रख रहे थे।
किँतु सबकी आँखें उस वक्त फ़टी की फटी रह गई जब वाक़ई , बताई गई दूरी के आस-पास पटरी टूटी हुई थी,नट-बोल्ट खुले हुए थे,अब गार्ड सहित वे सभी चेहरे जो उस भारतीय को गंवार, पागल कह रहे थे।वे उसकी और कौतूहलवश देखने लगे, मानो पूछ रहे हो आपको ये सब इतनी दूरी से कैसे पता चला ?

गार्ड ने पूछा:- तुम्हें कैसे पता चला , पटरी टूटी हुई हैं ?

उसने कहा:- श्रीमान लोग ट्रेन में अपने-अपने कार्यो मे व्यस्त थे।उस वक्त मेरा ध्यान ट्रेन की गति पर केंद्रित था। ट्रेन स्वाभाविक गति से चल रही थी। किन्तु अचानक पटरी की कम्पन से उसकी गति में परिवर्तन महसूस हुआ।ऐसा तब होता हैं, जब कुछ दूरी पर पटरी टूटी हुई हो।अतः मैंने बिना क्षण गंवाए, ट्रेन रोकने हेतु जंजीर खींच दी।

गार्ड औऱ वहाँ खड़े अंग्रेज दंग रह गये. गार्ड ने पूछा, इतना बारीक तकनीकी ज्ञान ! आप कोई साधारण व्यक्ति नही लगते।अपना परिचय दीजिये।

शख्स ने बड़ी शालीनता से जवाब दिया:- श्रीमान मैं भारतीय इंजीनियर मोक्षगुंडम विश्वेश्वरैया हूं.!

जी हाँ ! वह असाधारण शख्स कोई और नही “डॉ विश्वेश्वरैया” थे
