The Price Of Your New Passport May Be About To Go Up

The Price Of Your New Passport May Be About To Go Up

A friend of mine once said that, having spent more than two decades traveling and living all over the world as an English teacher, he considers his passport to be the one thing essential to, and irreplaceable in, his life. In other words, it’s the most valuable single item he possesses.

And now we’re about to see that value go up, as the British Home Office is planning to hike the price of getting a new European Union United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport (to give it its full, grandiose, and it seems fleeting, name.) In particular, new and renewing applicants will now see greater discrepancies between the price of postal and online applications.

Under the plans, online applications will go up with inflation from £72.50 to £75.50 for adults and from £46 to £49 for children. Postal applications on the other hand will jump from £72.50 to £85 for adults and from £46 to £58.50 for children.

If you’re a frequent flyer, better news, with the online price for a larger 16-extra-page passport staying at £85.50 while the postal price leaps to £95.

The less organised (and lucky) among us in need of a same day passport will now be faced with a £177 bill, up nearly £50 from the current £128 bill.

The plans are still to be approved by Parliament – but are expected to be soon, and will come into effect on 27 March 2018. According to the Home Office, “the fees will contribute to the cost of processing British passport holders as they travel in and out of the country, shifting the burden for paying for these services away from the taxpayer – millions of whom do not currently hold passports.” This is on top of the “costs associated with issuing UK passports and for consular support provided to British nationals abroad.”

If you’re in need of a new UK passport or only have one or two blanks pages left, which may mean you can’t visit certain countries, you have until 27 March to apply for a new one. You can apply no matter when your current passport is due to expire and can transfer any time you have left on it up to a maximum of nine months, so you don’t lose the time but could still save on cost.

Remember though, a new passport can take around three weeks to be delivered, so factor in any imminent trips you have coming before you order your new one.

Oh, and these price rises apparently have nothing to do with the other big UK passport change coming in 2019 – when its colour will switch from the burgundy EU version to a ‘British’ blue.

What Is Blue Coloured Aadhard Card?

What Is Blue Coloured Aadhard Card?

Aadhaar, the 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is a compulsory identity card. A number of government schemes require applicants to provide details of their Aadhar card number. Everyone can enroll for Aadhaar – even a newborn child, mentioned UIDAI in a tweet on it’s official Twitter handle- @UIDAI. UIDAI has now also introduced a blue coloured ‘Baal Aadhaar’ card for children below the age of 5 years, another tweet mentioned. For enrolling a child for Aadhaar card, the child’s birth certificate and the Aadhaar card number of one of the parents is required, said UIDAI in another tweet.  Biometrics is not developed for children before five years of age. According to UIDAI, a child’s Aadhaar data does not include biometric information like fingerprints and iris scan. Once the child crosses the age of five, biometrics should be updated, UIDAI further said.

Steps for getting ‘Baal Aadhar’ card number:

1. Visit the enrolment centre and fill out the enrolment form.

2. Provide the child’s birth certificate. One of the parents must also provide their Aadhaar card number for authentication purposes. It is necessary to provide the ‘Aadhaar’ card of one of the parents for enrolling for child’s ‘Aadhaar card’.

3. Also provide a mobile number

4. As the age of the applicant in this case is below five, no biometrics will be recorded and only photograph will serve the purpose. Biometrics should be updated after the child reaches the age of five.

5. A photograph of your child will be clicked.

6. Child’s ‘Aadhaar’ will be linked to the UID (Aadhaar card number) of his/her parents

7. After confirmation, collect an acknowledgement slip.

8. Once the registration and verification process has been completed, an SMS will be sent to the registered mobile number. Within 60 days of receiving this message, the Aadhaar card will number be issued to the newborn child.

DoT wants mobile numbers to have 13 digits from July 1, but don’t panic it won’t affect phone users

Did you hear that the Indian government wants mobile numbers to have 13 digits and not 10? It’s true. But no, it won’t change your existing number or affect the phone users in India. The 13-digit numbers are meant only for M2M (machine2machine) SIM cards, or in other words the cards that will be used in automated machines. The Department of Telecom has written to telecom companies that they should issue only 13-digit M2M numbers and that they should convert all the existing 10-digit M2M numbers into 13-digit numbers from October 1, 2018 onwards. The deadline to complete the conversion is December 31, 2018.

The move, contrary to speculations doing rounds right now on social media, will not affect phone users. It is meant only for the SIM cards that are used in machines, such as internet-connected appliances.

According to a directive that BSNL has sent to its hardware vendors ZTE and Nokia, DoT in a meeting on January 8 decided that the M2M SIM cards in India need to have 13-digits. Accordingly, BSNL informed its vendors that it will need infrastructure that can handle 13-digit M2M numbers from July 1, 2018 onwards. Also, it informs vendors that migration of existing M2M numbers, which have 10-digits just like the regular phone numbers used by people, to 13-digit numbers will start from October 1, 2018 and will be completed by December 31, 2018.

The M2M SIM cards are used in automated machines that require network connectivity. These could be large industrial machines part of automated assembly lines or they could be small gadgets, part of the Internet of Things, such as the fire alarm in your house that may require internet or cellular connectivity to send out alerts.

Income tax returns (ITR) filing: Bad news for salaried class; salary set to face this cut

Income tax returns (ITR) filing: Bad news for salaried class; salary set to face this cut

As if no relief in the income tax burden was not enough, here’s another bad news for the salaried persons. In a bid to broaden its tax base, the government is now eyeing even the compensation which someone would receive after being laid off. The Budget 2018 has proposed that if someone is laid off and receives a compensation, that will now be taxed as “Other Income”. Earlier, it was mostly considered as a non-taxable capital receipt.
Tax experts say that compensation is the only means of subsistence after someone’s termination. In simple words, compensation is the final payment which one receives after being laid off. It gives some strength to the concerned person to search for a new business or profession.

As per the existing provisions of the Income-Tax Act, 1961, “various types of compensation receipts are taxable as business income under clause (ii) of Section 28. The prevailing provision under Section 28 is confining its purview in relation to taxation of compensation keeping a large number of compensation receipts in connection with both business and employment out of the purview of taxation. It is leading to erosion of tax base and revenue loss,” says CA Abhishek Soni, Founder, tax2win.in.

Consequently, it has been proposed in the Budget 2018 to amend the Section 28 of the I-T Act to provide that any compensation received or receivable, whether revenue or capital, in connection with the termination or the modification of the terms and conditions of any contract in relation to business shall be taxable as ‘Business Income’.

Additionally, it has also been recommended to introduce the tax on compensation under Section 56 of the Act. It means any compensation received or receivable, in the nature of revenue or capital, in connection with the termination or the modification of the terms and conditions of any contract in relation to employment shall be taxable as ‘Other Source Income’.

Thus, “dual changes have been suggested in this Budget in relation to the receipt of compensation. One is broadening the scope of the existing tax on compensation in relation to business under Sec 28 and another one is taxing the compensation received in terms of employment for the first time under Sec 56. The object of this modification is to widen and deepen the tax base. These amendments will take effect from 1st April, 2018,” informs Soni.

To summarize

Tax experts say that compensation is not an income receipt, rather it’s more or less a kind of help to the laid off person. “On the one hand, the government is giving priority to the creation of employment and on the other hand, it is hitting the persons whose business or professional work has suffered termination. Therefore, the government must rethink on this tax proposal and come up with some modification upon it” says Soni.

10,000 Punjab National Bank Credit, Debit Card Customers Said to Be Affected by Data Breach

10,000 Punjab National Bank Credit, Debit Card Customers Said to Be Affected by Data Breach
Some 10,000 credit or debit card holders have been affected by a data breach reported by Punjab National Bank (PNB), which is already reeling under a multi-crore rupee financial fraud by two fugitive luxury jewellers.

According to an Asia Times report, security experts believe that the sensitive details of customers of the state-run bank were offered for sale through a website for at least three months.

The Hong Kong-based English language news reported that the bank was tipped off on Wednesday night about the data breach by CloudSek Information Security, a company registered in Singapore that also has its office in Bengaluru. The firm monitors data transactions.

“We have a crawler that is deployed in the dark/deep web. These are sites on the Internet which are not indexed by Google or other major search engines. They are used to buy and sell sensitive data illegally,” chief technical officer Rahul Sasi was quoted as saying by the news site.

“Our crawler detects any such data and sends it to a Machine Learning software that we have created. If this detects anything that is suspicious, and of interest to our clients, we immediately take action.”

PNB’s Chief Information Security Officer T.D. Virwani has confirmed it was working with the government to contain the fallout from the release of the data.

The data available for sale includes names, expiry dates, Personal Identification Numbers and Card Verification Values.

Sasi said two sets of data were released: some with CVV numbers and some without. The last date stamp on the data is January 29, 2018, indicating that the details are still current for thousands of card customers.

Xiaomi Mi 7 with 8GB RAM, 16MP dual cameras..

Xiaomi Mi 7 with 8GB RAM, 16MP dual cameras..

Xiaomi Mi 7, which is the company’s next-generation flagship smartphone could arrive in the market in the first half of the year. Xiaomi during the second Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii in December, announced that the Mi 7 will be the company’s first smartphone to be powered by a Snapdragon 845 mobile processor. Now detailed specifications and features of the upcoming smartphone have leaked in a screenshot by Playfuldroid.

Xiaomi Mi 7 is expected to feature a 5.65-inch Full HD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. Reports suggest that the successor to Mi 6 will come with an Apple iPhone X-like bezel-less display and a notch at the top of the screen. Additionally, the high-end smartphone could ditch the traditional fingerprint scanner in favour of a 3D facial recognition. In fact, the company might be looking to add the same Face ID system that we saw on the iPhone X.Xiaomi Mi 7 will get dual rear cameras, a combination of 16MP+16MP. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, the phone could feature 6GB/8GB RAM coupled with either 64GB or 128GB storage. The Mi 7 could ship with the company’s latest MIUI 9 user-interface. The Mi 7 could be backed by a massive 4,480 battery, compared to a 3,350mAh one on the Mi 6. Of course, the latest leak need to be taken with a pinch of salt as we’ve seen several conflicting reports concerning the Mi 7.

Reports also claim that Mi 7 could also sport a bezel-less display with a 6-inch OLED screen. Interestingly, an unofficial render leaked by Nigerian site Ninjatech suggests Mi 7 might feature a traditional fingerprint scanner on the back, like the Galaxy S8. It is unclear if Xiaomi will stick with the same design for the Mi 7 that we saw on the Mi 6.
