भारत को तपस्वी राजा देने वाले वाल्मीकि
रत्नाकर ने बहुत प्रयास किए, फिर कहा, ‘मेरे मुंह में यह शब्द आ ही नहीं रहा है। राम, राम कह ही नहीं सकता। मेरा शरीर दूषित है। दिव्य शब्द राम मेरे मुंह से उच्चरित नहीं हो सकता। श्रवण और कथन के लिए जो वातावरण, जैसी शक्ति चाहिए, वह मेरे पास नहीं है। मैं राम, राम नहीं जप सकता।’
देवर्षि ने भी कोशिश की, लेकिन रत्नाकर के मुंह से राम शब्द नहीं निकल पाया। देवर्षि ने कहा, ‘ठीक है, आप राम, राम नहीं जप सकते हैं, तो आप मरा, मरा ही जपिए।
यह रत्नाकर को ठीक लगा, वे जिस गलत व्यवसाय में थे, उसमें मारो, मारो बोलते ही रहते थे, मारो, पीटो, लूटो, काटो, राम, राम तो नहीं जप पाए, पाप की अधिकता के कारण, लेकिन मरा, मरा उन्होंने जपना शुरू किया। ऐसा जपा की दीमकों ने उन पर घर बना लिया। दीमक के घरों को ही वल्मीक बोलते हैं, इसलिए इनका नाम वाल्मीकि हो गया। उनका संपूर्ण जीवन विशुद्ध हो गया, भगवान का नाम जपते हुए।
आज वाल्मीकि पूरे संसार के लिए प्रेरणा स्रोत हैं। महर्षि वाल्मीकि आदिकाव्य के रचयिता हैं। वेदों को छोड़ दें, तो लौकिक भाषा में, लौकिक संस्कृति में सबसे पहला ग्रंथ महर्षि वाल्मीकि के ग्रंथ को माना गया। संपूर्ण संसार में जितनी भाषाएं हैं, उन भाषाओं में किसी भी भाषा के पास महर्षि वाल्मीकि का महाकाव्य वाल्मीकि रामायण जैसा कोई ग्रंथ नहीं है।
सीता ही नहीं, राम भी चाहते थे कि उनके बच्चे केवल महाराजा ही नहीं बनें, वन में भी रहें, तपस्वी बनें, ऋषित्व को भी प्राप्त करें। बच्चों को तपस्वी राजा बनाने के लिए ही महर्षि वाल्मीकि और उनके आश्रम का चयन किया गया। महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने संपूर्ण आत्मीय भाव से जानकी और उनके पुत्रों को अपने आश्रम में रखा। प्रभु राम के बच्चों को सशक्त रूप से विकसित किया। उन्होंने राम के बच्चों को वीर ही नहीं, विद्वान भी बनाया। यह सुखद संयोग है कि महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने अपने आदि काव्य को सबसे पहले राम के बच्चों लव-कुश को ही
सुनाया-पढ़ाया। यह इस संसार की अद्भुत घटना है कि दुनिया का सबसे पहली आदि काव्य ग्रंथ, जो माता सीता और पिता राम के लिए लिखा गया है, उसे उनके बच्चों को ही सबसे पहले पढ़ाया गया। भारत कोई विश्व गुरु ऐसे ही नहीं हो गया था। विश्व गुरु का परम पद केवल डॉक्टर, इंजीनियर पैदा करके नहीं पाया जा सकता, जब तक तपस्वियों या ऋषियों से संबंधित भावनाएं जीवन में नहीं अवतरित होंगी, तब तक जीवन कमाऊ और खाऊ ही बना रहेगा।
श्रीरामचरितमानस में लिखा है कि राम को चित्रकूट में रहने की सलाह ऋषि वाल्मीकि ने ही दी थी। चौदह वर्ष के वनवास पर निकले राम ने बहुत श्रद्धापूर्वक वाल्मीकि जी से पूछा था, ‘वह स्थान बतलाइए, जहां में सीता व लक्ष्मण सहित जाऊं और रहूं।’ तब वाल्मीकि भी भगवान राम को जान रहे थे, उन्होंने उत्तर दिया पूंछेहु मोहि कि रहाँ कहं मैं पूंछत सकुचाउं। जहं न होहु तह कहि तुम्हहि देखावाँ ठाउं ।।
अर्थात आप मुझसे पूछ रहे हैं कि मैं कहा रहूं। यहां मैं आपसे यह पूछते हुए सकुचा रहा हूं कि जहां आपन हों, वह जगह मुझे बता दीजिए, ताकि मैं आपके रहने के लिए जगह दिखा दूं। उसके बाद राम के विराजने के लिए जो-जो स्थान भक्ति भाव से महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने गिनाए, वो उनकी राम भक्ति का अनुपम प्रमाण हैं।
Ratnakara tried hard, then said, “I can’t even utter the words ‘Rama, Rama’. My body is polluted. The divine word ‘Rama’ cannot come out of my mouth. I don’t have the environment and the strength required for hearing and speaking. I cannot chant ‘Rama, Rama’.”
The sage tried too, but Ratnakara couldn’t utter the word ‘Rama’. The sage said, “Well, if you can’t chant ‘Rama, Rama’, then chant ‘Mara, Mara’.”
This seemed appropriate to Ratnakara. In the wrong profession he was engaged in, he constantly chanted ‘Kill, kill’, ‘Kill, beat, plunder, cut.’ Due to his excessive sin, he couldn’t chant ‘Rama, Mara’. But he began chanting ‘Mara, Mara’. He chanted so much that termites built their nests on him. Termite nests are called ‘Valmiki’, hence his name, Valmiki. His entire life became pure, chanting the name of God.
Today, Valmiki is a source of inspiration for the entire world. Maharishi Valmiki is the author of the Adikavya. Leaving aside the Vedas, Maharishi Valmiki’s work is considered the first text in a secular language and in secular culture. Of all the languages in the world, no language has a text like Maharishi Valmiki’s epic, the Valmiki Ramayana.
Not only Sita, but also Ram wanted his children not only to become kings but also to live in the forest, become ascetics, and attain sagehood. Maharishi Valmiki and his ashram were chosen to prepare their children to become ascetic kings. Maharishi Valmiki, with complete affection, kept Janaki and her sons in his ashram. He nurtured Lord Ram’s children with a strong sense of belonging. He made Ram’s children not only brave but also learned. It is a happy coincidence that Maharishi Valmiki first recited and taught his original poem to Rama’s children, Luv and Kush.
It is a remarkable event in this world that the world’s first original poem, written for Mother Sita and Father Rama, was first taught to their children. India did not become a world leader by chance. The supreme position of world leader cannot be achieved simply by producing doctors and engineers. Unless the spirit of ascetics and sages is inculcated in life, life will remain a life of earning and eating.
It is written in the Shri Ramcharitmanas that it was Sage Valmiki who advised Rama to live in Chitrakoot. Upon departing for fourteen years of exile, Rama reverently asked Valmiki, “Tell me the place where I can go and live with Sita and Lakshmana.” Then Valmiki also knew Lord Rama, he replied, “Ask me where I live, but I feel shy in asking. Wherever I am not, I will show you a place.”
That is, you are asking me where I live. Here I feel shy in asking you, please tell me the place where you are, so that I can show you a place to stay. After that, the places that Maharishi Valmiki counted with devotion for Rama’s stay, are a unique proof of his devotion to Rama.
