If we ask you to name a few ‘performers’ in Bollywood, we are sure you would mention Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, and the likes. Popularity-wise, of course, Shilpa Shetty, Sunny Deol, and others. When you merge both, it might land up in a ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ kind of situation. And that’s exactly what happened with the 1996 film, Himmat, starring Sunny Deol, Tabu and Shilpa Shetty in lead roles. January 5, 2022, marks 26 years of Himmat’s release and in today’s edition of Wahiyat Wednesday, we tell you why the audience couldn’t gather any himmat to watch the film in theatres.
HIMMAT’S PLOTLINE IS A KHICHDI OF NOTHING
Most of the 90s cop universe had either an Akshay Kumar or a Sunny Deol in it. Our Wahiyat Wednesday film of the week, Himmat, is no different. The film begins with Sunny Deol (Ajay) and Sudesh Berry (Abdul) waking up to the sound of a doorbell. We understand that the two play secret agents, but at least give us some context before we see Abdul sleeping with a revolver in his hand. Himmat will also give you an insight into the lives of secret agents. For instance, if two security agents share a room, they will twin in matching night suits. Just FYI.
Reiterating a few facts again, Ajay and Abdul are two Indian Secret Agents and you know what they do. They call themselves friends, colleagues, brothers, partners, everything in one package and even tie rakhi on one another’s wrists. Progressive! But, we wish more such thoughts were applied to the rest of the movie as well. Ajay soon goes on a holiday to Switzerland. There, he falls in love with Tabu and dances in a gazillion songs that seem like an hour long. But, Abdul gets a mission to accomplish and gets killed in the process. The plotline of the tale suddenly changes from national security to avenging Abdul’s death.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? WISH WE HAD AN ANSWER!
What’s the hurry to get into the climax? Story pe dhyan dete hain. So Sunny Deol has a hard time juggling between his attention-seeking girlfriend, Tabu, and the mission that he has to accomplish. Avenging Abdul’s death, silly! He meets goons from all quarters, even the one who killed Abdul, but he slips out of his hand. Well, he has to. How else will the movie stretch to almost three hours?
SHILPA SHETTY’S ENTRY
Just as the film completes the one-and-a-half-hour mark, Shilpa Shetty enters. With her initial scenes, you will realise that she plays a hot biker and we were just about to say progressive Part 2 when she starts eyeing Sunny Deol and greeting him with a weird ‘Hi handsome’, every time they cross paths. Every. Single. Time. In fact, Shilpa is so daredevil in the film that she eyes Sunny in front of Tabu and even appreciates his OOTD (outfit of the day). Oh we didn’t tell you when Sunny and Tabu start dating, right? We don’t know either. It just happens sometime in the midst of Sunny having a hard time juggling his personal and private life.
Unfortunately, Shilpa, Sunny and Tabu do not have a love triangle in the film, but there is an entire song about it. Perhaps, the only good thing about the movie (Sathiya Bin Tere Dil Maane Na). But the twist in the tale is, Shilpa is not an enticer but a secret agent who works for the villains (hawww)!
CLIMAX
So aa hi gaya finale! Sunny aka Ajay will avenge his friend Abdul’s death in the most dramatic way and in the most unrealistic fight sequences. Shilpa, who helps the villains keep track of Sunny and nab him too, understands that this is paap (sin) and turns the tables. And well, jiska darr tha wahi hua. She sides with Sunny and soon after, dies, for nothing!
That’s still not the end. More bizarre action sequences follow and now Ajay realises he’s lost two people and can’t afford to anymore or the movie will stretch further. So, he takes out his sleeveless vest, flaunts his dhai kilo ka haath and kills the villains. And that is how Abdul’s death is avenged.
The movie is so good that for the next couple of days you won’t be able to let it slip out of your system. Ending our edition of Wahiyat Wednesday with an important question: After 26 years, will you have the himmat to watch Himmat? Let us know if you did, at all.
