दरअसल, जब नाव पानी में तैरती रहती है, तो उसे आगे बढ़ने में बहुत – ताकत लगती है और ज्यादा ईंधन – चाहिए। लेकिन वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा बनाई – गई ‘हाइड्रोफॉइल’ नाव पानी से ऊपर – उठकर चलती है, इसलिए उसे कम ताकत और कम ईंधन लगता है।

इसकी खोज बहुत पहले 1860 के दशक में हुई थी। तब नाव पहली बार पानी से ऊपर उठती दिखी थीं। कनाडाई वैज्ञानिक अलेक्जेंडर ग्राहम बेल ने भी इस तकनीक पर काम किया और उनकी नाव ने बहुत तेज गति हासिल की।

आज हाइड्रोफॉइल को इलेक्ट्रिक बनाया जा रहा है। इसका मतलब है कि अब ये नावें बैटरी से चलती हैं, जिससे धुआं या प्रदूषण नहीं होता।
