अच्छे-बुरे को खुद परखें
एक बादशाह ने दो गुलाम खरीदे। दोनों दोस्त थे। बादशाह ने दोनों गुलामों की परीक्षा लेने का फैसला किया। एक से बातचीत की, तो वह बड़ा बुद्धिमान और मीठा बोलने वाला मालूम हुआ। जब उसकी परीक्षा ले चुका, तो उसे नहा-धोकर फिर से आने को कह बादशाह ने दूसरे गुलाम को बुलाया। दूसरे गुलाम का भद्दा चेहरा देखकर बादशाह खुश नहीं हुआ, परंतु वह उसकी योग्यता परखने लगा। उसने दूसरे गुलाम से कहा, ‘तू अकेला सौ गुलामों के बराबर है, ऐसा मालूम तो नहीं होता और तुम्हारे बारे में जो कुछ तेरे साथी ने बताया है, उसे सुनकर तो हम तुम्हें लेकर बिल्कुल निराश हो गए हैं।’
गुलाम ने जवाब दिया, ‘जहांपनाह, वह बड़ा सच्चा आदमी है। वह स्वभाव से सत्यवादी है। इसलिए उसने जो कुछ मेरे में बारे में कहा है, यदि मैं वैसा ही उसके बारे में कहूं, तो झूठा दोष लगाना होगा। बादशाह सलामत ! मुमकिन है कि वह मुझमें जोऐब देखता है, वह मुझे शायद खुद से न दिखते हों?’ बादशाह ने कहा, ‘तू उसके अवगुणों का बखान कर, जैसा कि उसने तेरे दोषों का किया है, ताकि मुझे यकीन हो सके कि तू मेरा हितैषी है और शासन के प्रबंध में मेरी सहायता कर सकता है।’
दूसरा गुलाम बोला, ‘बादशाह सलामत! उसमें नम्रता और सच्चाई है। वीरता व उदारता भी ऐसी है कि मौका पड़ने पर प्राण तक न्योछावर कर सकता है। वह अभिमानी नहीं है और स्वयं ही अपने अवगुण प्रकट कर देता है। वह दूसरों के लिए अच्छा और अपने लिए बुरा है।’ बादशाह ने कहा, ‘अपने साथी की प्रशंसा में अतिन करो, क्योंकि अगर मैंने उसे तुम्हारे सामने बुला दिया, तो तुझको लज्जित होना पड़ेगा।’ दूसरे गुलाम ने कहा, ‘हुजूर, अपने मित्र के बारे में मैं जो जानता हूं, यदि उस पर आपको यकीन नहीं, तो मैं और क्या ही कहूं !’
बादशाह ने कुरूप गुलाम की अच्छी तरह परीक्षा कर ली, तो उसे भेजकर सुदर्शन चेहरे वाले पहले गुलाम को बुलाया और कहा, ‘मालूम नहीं, तेरे साथी को क्या हो गया था कि उसने पीठ-पीछे तेरी बुराई की !’ पहले गुलाम नेपूछा, ‘जहांपनाह। उसने क्या कुछ कहा, उसका जरा-सा संकेत तो मुझे मिलना चाहिए?’ बादशाह ने कहा, ‘सबसे पहले तुम्हारे दोगलेपन का
बादशाह ने पहले गुलाम को रोकते हुए कहा, बस, हद हो गई। उसका सिर्फ चेहरा सुदर्शन नहीं, तेरी तो आत्मा गंदी है। तू दूर बैठ। वही गुलाम अधिकारी बनेगा, तू अब से उसके अधीन रहेगा।
जिक्र किया कि तूप्रकट में दवा और परोक्ष में दर्द है।’ यह सुनते ही पहला गुलाम भड़क उठा। वह अपने साथी की बुराइयां करता ही चला गया। थोड़ी देर में बादशाह ने उसे रोकते हुए कहा, बस, हद हो गई। उसका सिर्फ चेहरा सुदर्शन नहीं, तेरी तो आत्मा गंदी है। तूदूर बैठ। वह गुलाम ही अधिकारी बनेगा और तू अब से उसके अधीन रहेगा।
लुभावना रूप होते हुए भी यदि मनुष्य अवगुणों से भरा हो, तो उसका कभी मान नहीं हो सकता और चरित्रवान कुरूप के चरणों में बैठना भी श्रेष्ठकर है।
रूमी
A king bought two slaves. They were friends. He decided to test them. He spoke with one and found him to be very intelligent and sweet-spoken. After testing him, he asked him to bathe and come back. The king called for the second slave. The king was not pleased with the second slave’s ugly face, but he continued to evaluate his abilities. He said to the second slave, “You alone don’t seem to be worth a hundred slaves, and after hearing what your companion has said about you, I have completely lost hope in you.”
The slave replied, “Your Majesty, he is a very honest man. He is truthful by nature. Therefore, if I were to say the same things about him that he said about me, I would be making a false accusation. Your Majesty! Is it possible that he sees flaws in me that I may not even see in myself?” The king said, “Describe his flaws, just as he has described yours, so that I may be convinced that you are my well-wisher and can help me in the administration.”
The second slave said, “Your Majesty! He possesses humility and truthfulness. He possesses such bravery and generosity that he can even sacrifice his life if the occasion arises. He is not arrogant and reveals his own flaws. He is good for others and bad for himself.” The king said, “Stop praising your companion, because if I summon him before you, you will be embarrassed.” The second slave said, “Your Majesty, if you do not believe what I know about my friend, what more can I say!”
The king thoroughly examined the ugly slave, then sent him to call the first slave with the handsome face and said, “I don’t know what happened to your companion that he spoke ill of you behind your back!” The first slave asked, “Your Majesty, what did he say? I need a hint of that.” The king replied, “First of all, about your hypocrisy.”
The king stopped the first slave and said, “That’s too much. Not only is his face beautiful, but your soul is also filthy. Stay away. That slave will become your boss, and you will be under his control from now on.”
He mentioned that you are medicine in appearance and pain in disguise. Hearing this, the first slave became enraged. He continued to speak ill of his companion. After a while, the king stopped him and said, “That’s enough. Not only is his face beautiful, but your soul is also filthy. Stay away. That slave will become your boss, and you will be under his control from now on.”
Even if a person has an attractive appearance but is full of vices, he can never be respected. It is better to sit at the feet of an ugly person with good character.
