नेपाल की ताजा घटनाओं ने देश का ध्यान अपनी ओर खींच लिया है। नेपाल भारत का पड़ोसी राज्य है और एक पड़ोसी राज्य में होने वाली घटनाओं से भारत कैसे अप्रभावित रह सकता है? तिब्बत में चीन द्वारा शक्ति के प्रयोग की रोशनी में नेपाल का घटनाचक्र और महत्व धारण कर लेता है। भारत अपनी उत्तरी सीमा की रक्षा के संबंध में अब तक निश्चिन्त था, किन्तु जैसा कि भारत के उप-प्रधानमंत्री सरदार पटेल ने दिल्ली की सार्वजनिक सभा में कहा है, सुरक्षा की यह भावना अब नष्ट हो गई है। भारत की उत्तरी सीमा पर खतरे के चिन्ह प्रकट हो रहे हैं और भारत को इन उठते हुए खतरों का सामना करने के लिए सतर्क होना पड़ेगा। नेपाल नरेश और वहां के प्रधानमंत्री में अनबन पैदा हो गई है। नेपाल के महाराजाधिराज त्रिभुवन वीर विक्रम शाह देव अपने युवराज और युवराज के प्रथम पुत्र के साथ काठमांडू स्थित भारतीय दूतावास में शरण लेने को बाध्य हुए हैं। नेपाल में वैधानिक स्थिति बड़ी विचित्र है। नेपाल नरेश नाम के ही राजा हैं। शासन की समस्त सत्ता प्रधानमंत्री के हाथों में केन्द्रित है। वही राज्य के प्रधान सेनापति भी हैं। अतः नेपाल का राजा सर्वशक्तिमान प्रधानमंत्री की इच्छा के विरुद्ध नहीं जा सकता। कितनी साधारण-सी बात पर नेपाल नरेश और नेपाल के प्रधानमंत्री में अनबन हो गई, यह इसी से प्रकट हो जाता है कि नेपाल नरेश अपने इलाज के लिए भारत आना चाहते थे और प्रधानमंत्री ने उनको इसकी इजाजत नहीं दी। इससे ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि नेपाल नरेश नेपाल सरकार के बन्दी बनकर ही नेपाल में रह रहे थे। कहा जाता है कि नेपाल के प्रधानमंत्री का कोपभाजन बनकर बड़े-से-बड़ा व्यक्ति भी नेपाल में सुरक्षित नहीं रह सकता। नेपाल नरेश ने अपने सारे परिवार सहित भारतीय दूतावास में जो शरण ली है, इसका और क्या कारण हो सकता है?

नेपाल सरकार की ओर से कहा गया है कि नेपाल नरेश को भारतीय दूतावास से वापस लाने का प्रयत्न किया गया, किन्तु उन्होंने नेपाल सरकार के प्रतिनिधियों से मिलना तक स्वीकार नहीं किया। इसका अर्थ ही यह है कि नेपाल नरेश नेपाल सरकार की नेकनीयती पर भरोसा करने को तैयार नहीं हैं। जहां तक भारत सरकार का ताल्लुक है, वह नेपाल-नरेश और राज-परिवार के अन्य सदस्यों को शरण देने से इन्कार नहीं कर सकती थी।

His Majesty King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah Dev, along with his Crown Prince and the Crown Prince’s first son, has been forced to seek refuge in the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. The legal situation in Nepal is quite peculiar. The King of Nepal is the King in name only. All administrative power is concentrated in the hands of the Prime Minister, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the State. Therefore, the King of Nepal cannot go against the wishes of the all-powerful Prime Minister. The discord between the King and the Prime Minister over such a simple matter is evident from the fact that the King wanted to come to India for medical treatment, but the Prime Minister refused permission. This suggests that the King of Nepal was living in Nepal as a prisoner of the Nepal government. It is said that even the most influential person cannot remain safe in Nepal without incurring the wrath of the Prime Minister of Nepal. What other reason could there be for the King of Nepal and his entire family to seek refuge in the Indian Embassy?

The Nepal government has stated that efforts were made to bring the King back from the Indian Embassy, ​​but he refused to even meet with representatives of the Nepal government. This clearly indicates that the King of Nepal is unwilling to trust the good intentions of the Nepal government. As for the Indian government, it could not have refused to grant asylum to the King of Nepal and other members of the royal family.
