दुर्गापुर गैंगरेप जैसी अमानवीय घटना ने पूरे देश को हिला दिया, पर उससे भी अधिक निराशाजनक रहा पश्चिम बंगाल को मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी का बयान। उन्होंने कहा कि लड़कियों को रात में बाहर नहीं जाना चाहिए। यह बयान न केवल असंवेदनशील प्रतीत होता है, बल्कि समाज में एक गलत संदेश भी देता है- जैसे कि अपराध रोकने की जिम्मेदारी महिलाओं पर ही हो। जब किसी लड़की के साथ अपराध होता है, तब प्रश्न उठना चाहिए अपराधियों की मानसिकता और कानून-व्यवस्था पर, न कि पीड़िता को स्वतंत्रता पर। एक जन-प्रतिनिधि से अपेक्षा होतो है कि वह ऐसी घड़ी में पीड़िता और महिलाओं को सुरक्षा और न्याय का भरोसा दिलाए, न कि उन्हें डर या बंदिश का संदेश दे। महिलाओं की सुरक्षा का समाधान ‘रात में बाहर न निकलने’ में नहीं, बल्कि ‘अपराधियों को सख्त सजा देने’ और ‘कानून व्यवस्था मजबूत करने’ में है। इसलिए ममता बनर्जी के बयान को संवेदना और जवाबदेही, दोनों स्तरों पर, बेहद दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण कहा जा सकता है। यह विकृत मानसिकता की निशानी है। पूनम सिंह भदौरिया, टिप्पणीकार

पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी द्वारा मेडिकल छात्रा के साथ कथित सामूहिक बलात्कार के बाद यह सलाह देना कि छात्राएं रात में घर से चाहरे न निकले, निंदनीय है और राजनीतिक पतन की पराकाष्ठा को दर्शाती है। उनकी टिप्पणी तृणमूल कांग्रेस सरकार के ‘विफल प्रशासन’ और ‘नैतिक रूप से खोखले नेतृत्व’ को दर्शाती है। बलात्कार पीड़िता को न्याय दिलाने के बजाय पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार बेशर्मी से महिलाओं की स्वतंत्रता और अधिकारों पर सवाल उठा रही है। एक राज्य के मुख्यमंत्री से अपेक्षा जाती है कि वह महिलाओं को सुरक्षा और सम्मान की गारंटी दे, न कि उनकी स्वतंत्रता पर अत्याचारी प्रतिबंध लगाए। आज हालात ये हैं कि बंगाल में सत्ता में बैठे लोगों द्वारा संरक्षित अपराधी खुलेआम घूमते हैं, जबकि न्याय की मांग करने वाले पीड़ितों की आवाज को बेरहमी से दवा दिया जाता है। एक निजी मेडिकल कॉलेज की द्वितीय वर्ष की छात्रा के साथ परिसर के बाहर कथित तौर पर तब सामूहिक बलात्कार किया गया, जब वह एक दोस्त के साथ रात का खाना खाने गई थी। घटना के बाद मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा, ‘वह रात के 12.30 बजे बाहर कैसे आई ? उनसे हॉस्टल के नियमों का पालन करने की उम्मीद की जाती है। उन्हें देर रात बाहर निकलने से बचना चाहिए।’ एक महिला नेत्री होते हुए महिलाओं के प्रति ऐसी बयानबाजी अति अशोभनीय है।

She said that girls should not go out at night. This statement not only appears insensitive but also sends a wrong message to society—as if the responsibility of preventing crime lies solely with women. When a crime is committed against a girl, questions should be raised about the mindset of the perpetrators and law and order, not about the freedom of the victim. A public representative is expected to assure the victim and women of safety and justice in such times, not to send a message of fear or restriction. The solution to women’s safety lies not in “not going out at night,” but in “strictly punishing the criminals” and “strengthening law and order.” Therefore, Mamata Banerjee’s statement can be considered extremely unfortunate, both at the level of sensitivity and accountability. It is a sign of a distorted mentality.

Her comments reflect the Trinamool Congress government’s “failed administration” and “morally hollow leadership.” Instead of providing justice to the rape victim, the West Bengal government is shamelessly questioning the freedom and rights of women. A state Chief Minister is expected to guarantee safety and dignity to women, not impose draconian restrictions on their liberty. Today, the situation is such that criminals protected by those in power in Bengal roam freely, while the voices of victims demanding justice are brutally silenced. A second-year student of a private medical college was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus while she was out to have dinner with a friend. Following the incident, the Chief Minister said, “How did she come out at 12:30 in the night?” They are expected to follow hostel rules. They should avoid going out late at night.” Such statements about women are highly indecent for a woman leader.
